I've joined the cycling scum on 16:50 - Mar 21 with 3854 views | KBsSocks | My oldest is a Peugeot 5-gear road bike from the late seventies which I bought for £20 in 1982. Purple. I've also a £10 "Saxon" cheapo roadbike which is grey. Heavy as hell. I use a hybrid mostly, which was £60 from a charity shop. It's dark red. Got panniers. I've a skip-rescued mountain bike with very low gearing and thick tyres. A "Jumelle" or something. Bright Purple. Use that for hills and Naked Bike Rides. My Raleigh steel-framed tourer was run over by a taxi with me still on it, and will maybe be one day fixed. That took me across Europe from the Adriatic to the Baltic in seven weeks in 2004. 500 km in 3 days was the most I did in terms of distance / day - I didn't take to Warsaw, so kept going. There's a blue folding shopper that I'm fixing up. Came with a nice bell for £10. And there's a light blue hybrid cheapo thing in the shed. Keep your tyres pumped up as hard as you can manage, and keep your eye on the route - I rarely get punctures, but thorns from Hawthorn on towpaths are indeed the most common cause of my punctures. Or dodgy valves on the inner tubes.

Whats an inclement weather bike? Does it have a little motorised hood that comes up and over? if so, i want one!

None taken, Mr Clarkson :-P Another bit of advice - spend more on your back tyre: get as "pucture-proof" a tyre as you can, 'cos changing the back wheel's a lot more of a hassle than changing the front. And if your back brake is dodgy, FIX IT ! Don't rely on your front brake else you'll catch something from kissing pavements. Use panniers rather than rucksacks, too. And make sure your seat is the correct height so, for example, your knees aren't less than 90' at the top of the "stroke", and you're not bearing down unnecessarily on your handlebar.

arf! Thats all intriguing stuff - why no rucksack but panniers instead, out of interest? I remember the front break thing fron learning to ride as a kid - arse over tit I went! Top tip on the back tyre.

This guy wins. My current stable is: Brompton black edition for pootling around and some light commuting Kona Mahuna hardtail mountain bike Vitus Aero TT for triathlon and time trial Ribble Endurance SL disc as main summer bike. Just upgraded the wheels Giant Defy 4 for winter The weirdest thing I've found from cycling, no matter the price, the emotional connection you have with a bike is really important. The Giant is the worst bike by some stretch but it started my love of cycling. [Post edited 21 Mar 2020 18:16]

The Vitus bikes are very good, definitely in the frame for when I replace my Roo. Agree about the emotional connection though, can't get rid of the Roberts or the Coventry Eagle frames, had both of those over 40 years! The main problem with having bikes is cleaning the darn things, if only there was the equivalent of a car wash for bikes, I'd be right there!!

Rucksack affects your back and balance. If you're lazy, like me, you use a rucksack if the panniers aren't on permanently. But you're better off with a lower centre of gravity, and carrying my week's pizzas and beer in a rucksack gives me backache and affects mobility when looking over my shoulder to see how far back Mr Clarkson is if I'm turning right. (I've only one rear-view mirror on all those bikes 'cos they keep getting broken). It's easier to carry and pack a rucksack in the supermarket, though ... and easier to get through tight gaps on towpaths without panniers.

Compared to the carbon bike, I think it does help a bit, either that or I haven’t pumped the tyres up enough. I have the same saddle on my road bikes, and I think the Titanium is the most gentle.

No, I was a road race and track or velodrome racing cyclist for around 17 years, I used to ride about 250 to 270 miles a week, 50 weeks a year during that time. The longest races I rode in were around 120 miles and the longest training rides were around 140 miles, but 100 mile rides were my Sunday rides from 1st January to march after which racing started.

Given you can't really get within 1.5m of people whilst cycling and you're not going to get water droplets from someone in your eyes when you're both going 20mph is it a socially acceptable form of exercise at the moment? Or should it be an individual endeavour? SB
