For the country, it is sad this will never be allowed to happen by Momentum and the Unions

My preference is Starmer or Nandy. I'm not sure RLB would be as bad as Corbyn but she doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either, better than Lavery though!

For deputy anyone but Burgon, he is a complete and utter liability and needs to be taken off the front bench at the first opportunity. Probably Rayner for me.

Interesting that all the spiel and fantasy on here about why Labour are unelectable and which faceless leader they go for to waffle through their upcoming self-inflicted decade in the wilderness is that nobody has pointed out what mythological 'hard working ordinary people' voted for in the last election.

What they wanted is quite simple.... to 'get Brexit done'. Shorthand for sending immigrants home... by far the ONLY policy people actually cared about.... there was even an interview with a northern diabetic who would have been perfectly happy to have trouble getting life-saving medication and die - as long those immigrants were sent home

You could dress that up differently and tell people you WILL be far worse off, You WILL lose your job, You WILL be dribbling in a home with no carers.. The NHS will be in a worse state of collapse than it is already. Education will be unaffordable... as will transport infrastructure. You WILL losethe equivalent of a years salary in the next three years (IF you keep your job) .... you'll have to pay for broadband.....and still those people would vote to get brexit done.

That is the reason Labour failed so completely and utterly. They could probably have even made anti-semitism a positive such is the deep hatred for immigration in this country.

Its not a majority - but that doesnt matter in our 'democracy'. All the Tories have to do is draw in a few mugs in constituencies of disaffected people. The last election was almost entirely on Brexit lines. Brexit ie Tory party and gurning toad party 43% Remain Parties 57%...exactly what most polls show to be the nation's current position on brexit. AND a massive maajority NOT to have a tory government .....AGAIN

And the result? 43% of the vote is a massive mandate from the British people to deliver the will of the minority.

The one positive of the divisive chaos the Tories have engineered largely through their own incompetence is that is is easily countered by a sane and rational opposition.

Alas we don't have that at present in any party save perhaps the SNP - and they will go their own way within the next decade.

The time has come for all the opposition parties to recognise the only way forward is to work together.... just as not working together has led to the unholy mess.

I'm not so sure. Even John Macdonald has distanced himself from his hairdresser protegee. Given the scale of the defeat - and the sheer irrelevance of Labour to the real world at the moment you might find the party comes to its senses at some point.

Even the 'right-on' urge to appoint a shouty, inexperienced woman might be overcome if anyone in Labournoticed what happened to the Lib-Dems.

The main problem with Starmer is that he is not a pigeon fancier from up north.... the sort of nonense the idiots within Labour now think important if a bit of credibility is to be restored with the great unwashed.

His remoaning profile can only be good as the country begins to suffer still further from Brexit... and it is unlikely ANY leader will be able to turn things around within one parliament, no matter how awful and chaotic this one is going to be.... look at the pig's ear Corbyn made of an empty net and open goal in May's time 'in power'.

Labour's only hope is to appoint someone with stature and common sense. Alas, so poor are Labour at present, thanks to Corbyn's purges that this is effectively a shortlist of two... Starmer or oblivion.

i dont think labour have a ex bullingdon club member, who they could put up as a working class hero.

forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows
