we were... until burley went mad , bought a load of non-suitable players, relegated us, left us on the edge of the championship relegation zone (remember grimsby?) and ready to go into administration. bfj saved us from his relegation to league 1, but administration led directly to evans, keane, jewell, mick, hurst and our current mess

my recollection is scowie went because of burley not picking him? i agree wright's loss was a big one, but he had plenty of time and money to replace him better (and cheaper) than marshall plus sereni finidi while talented was a poor signing for us at that time, if we think jackson is a poor buy, le pen was absolutely atrocious! marcus bent was an overpriced panic buy, though he got a few goals

championship relegation zone is unfair, we had games in hand because of european games. we actually had P10 W3 D3 L4, a record we'd kill for nowadays.

we were 19th and unable to get within 2 goals of a v poor grimsby team with a "premiership quality" side! just like mick, burley had to go for the good of the club. sheepy made a far better choice of replacement than evans though!

scowie started 1 of the last 7 games, burley chose to get rid, which was a mistake (similar to hurst's, too much change too soon). finidi cost a lot, played a few good games, scored one goal after new year, good player, not what we needed at the time m bent disturbed the armstrong/stewart axis, keeping scowie would have been a damn sight cheaper and less upheaval le pen, a lightweight french winger with no experience at a big club or league was not what we needed at the time, injury or not! as successful as karic!

As i just said, the league position was false due to games in hand, so just repeating we were 19th does not really help your argument. Grimsby was just one game, a lot of the other results were unfortunate, Bradford home and Preston away we created countless chances and should have won both. Sheepshanks had already contacted Royle before Grimsby anyway. It was a mistake in hindsight, we were still under the delusion that we had a divine right to be in the Premiership at the time.
