Accrington away 15:31 - Dec 28 with 3796 views | RogerOsporn | Has anybody else purchased train tickets and planned on going via Leeds? Me and a group (stupidly I know) have gone and bought tickets whilst they were mega cheap, despite knowing Northern Rail were striking. However, we did assume they would throw on some form of alternative transport from Leeds to Accrington. Apparently not. 50+ miles from Leeds to Accrington, wondering if anybody else is in the same boat and come up with any plans on how to get to and fro. Day out in Leeds seems likely

Accrington away on 15:41 - Dec 28 with 3772 views | Danny_G | I think the only realistic train option is via Preston. We’re doing that and getting a taxi from Accrington afterwards (we’ve been quoted £18 between four of us). You could get a refund for your Leeds trains and book new ones via Preston - there are still some advance fares on that route.

I'm going via Preston. Are the Preston-Accrington trains unaffected?

Yes, will have to get a bus from Preston. It appears there are no trains whatsoever going through Accrington. In response to the OP, I booked train via Leeds like you when they were cheap, but since they announced the strikes just brought coach tickets to save all the hassle and hopefully get refunded on the trains. Is that the rail replacement buses? EDIT: Just checked... trains as far as Blackburn then a 30 min replacement bus to Accrington. So not too bad. [Post edited 28 Dec 2018 16:10]

Getting there is fine, but getting back is more of a problem - you can’t get back to Preston before half seven. That’s fine if your train is going a bit later, but we need to leave before, hence the taxi.

They’re pretty much always refundable. If you just can’t travel or change your mind then there’s usually a £10 admin fee. If your train isn’t running though, they have to refund without a fee; they can’t charge you for a service they can’t provide.

That's what I was thinking, even the least of refunds should be the Leeds- Accrington journey.

Accrington away on 16:43 - Dec 28 with 3650 views | No9 | If you have bought a ticket which says the rail Co will take you to Accrington, that is a contract they have to honour. Be careful with timing mind the contract may not extend to you getting there at any particulr time. Which Co did you buy the ticket from?

We’ve only booked Ipswich to Leeds though.

You should still be able to at least get a refund minus the admin fee - the exact terms will be set by the train company but that’s the baseline set by the National Rail Conditions of Travel. They might even take pity and give you the whole amount back if you explain, but you’ll be entitled to something. I’m in a similar boat for Blackburn - we booked to Manchester but there’s naff all chance of getting a train from there now, so we rebooked to Preston. I’m planning to phone Cross Country and try to persuade them to refund in full once the strike timetables are out for that day. It might not work, but it’s worth trying.

And it doesn't mean they'll get you there by rail.

Juat has a look at LNER - it looks like you’re right and they’re harsher than most. You can change an advance for the admin fee but not get a refund. Must be worth contacting them though.

My post at the top has links to the northern rail website and I have put all the bus times to Accrington too. From Leeds you need to get a train to either Hebden Bridge or Todmorden. Then a bus to Burnley and then to Accrington. Sorry. But I did post on December the 4th to try and warn everyone.

Got them through Greater Anglia, will pop down the station at some point and discuss.

Witch way buses go from City centre (less than 5 mins walk from the train station to the bus station) and as far as I know still stop at Accrington - they used to be the 41 from memory but you'd need to google that. They aren't the quickest way but will be dirt cheap. Same service to Blackburn and Burnley if I remember right.

Careful with Greater Anglia. They tried to tell me my ticket back from Boro tomorrow isn't valid due to strike action, and so I had to buy a new ticket for £100+. Asked at York station today, totally different story. I either travel later, (much later) or buy a ticket to York and get any GNER to London, then get a refund on the Boro - Darlo off Northern Fail.
