“I’m 78 on an £18,000 income and live a very good life in London“ 17:20 - Feb 4 with 21505 views | monytowbray | https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/feb/03/78-18000-income-london-pension-hol This seemed like an odd article to me, the main conclusion I drew being it’s another “Millennials are entitled and bad with money” agenda-pushing pile of BS. So I did some rough maths... When considering the fact the woman in question doesn’t pay rent (£580pcm average based on renting the room of a 3 bedroom home in London), gets free travel (£150pcm for a zone 1-3 Oyster card) and likely gets better tax breaks than most as a single inhabitant pensioner - she actually has a similar income to a young London renter on a £34,000 annual salary. Take that a step further and consider she lives in a 4 bedroom house on her own (£2,500pcm average), that salary would rocket to £72,000. What frustrates me most is the idea that she’s somehow living her lifestyle through good, tight budgeting and nothing to do with privilage. I dread to think how the Daily Mail would report the same story about someone who isn’t British.

Work in retail for a few months and you'll soon realise people will sell a child for some loyalty points or a free branded pen.

Wider context mostly. Seems to be a bit of an out-of-touch kick in the teeth to anyone struggling to get buy on low wage. It’s the sort of article I’d have expected Bloo to post here with some sarky comment about avocados and tattoos.

I'm aware of that and agree the general point, just don't think it applies here. It's just the usual sort of bollox that weekend papers are filled with.

Regardless of how she made her money or what her family do, she’s denying she’s in a much better financial and living situation than many, and then parading around claiming she’s living on an £18k budget. That’s the privilage - she is in fact living on a £34-72k salary when you consider the luxuries she has over many younger people. I’d be much better off on an even lower wage than that if I didn’t have to pay rent and fork out for travel.

It was her apparent delight at her husband's death that tickled me.

He left her a pension too. Talk about the “something for nothing” entitled generation. Just expect everyone else to work hard on their behalf. Bloody socialists will ruin this country.

of course she doesn't pay rent - her mortgage was paid off years ago. It was probably a sacrifice made in the past that came good. I can't see she is 'parading around'. She is just saying that she is thankful for her financial situation most of which came about by her/her husbands fiscal decisions many years ago.

She’s not saying that at all. She’s claiming she lives a life of comfort and enjoyment on a budget that is largly out of touch for actual low earners. As I said, she’s on a £74,000 salary in terms of assets. If she was being grateful for that she wouldn’t be claiming she’s frugal. I know people on more than that in London who barely scrap by.

Indeed, living within your means does pay off eventually, though she also got a stroke of luck with her husband dying.
