No disrespect to a thoroughly decent man
at 09:30 8 May 2024

This is the modern day Graham Harbey post.
They’re not dreadful footballers, you don’t get to that level if you can’t play.
It was just bleak times for the club.
I’ve seen worse footballers than Harbey play for our club and worse managers than John Duncan.
But both Duncan and Harbey were there when the club hit a new depth following an unbelievable period of success and therefore are used as a yardstick for mediocrity.
Kenlock wasn’t Championship quality but there were quite a few like that and it carried on into League One.
Thankfully we now have a much better squad, an excellent manager and a hierarchy and ownership who know what they’re doing.
But we’re not Arsenal, we’re not Manchester United, we all know the wheel will turn again and there will be another Harbey or Kenlock down the line.
In the meantime I’ll make the most of McKenna, Morsy etc and cherish the memories we are enjoying right now in the same way I look misty eyed at Butcher, Wark, Thijssen, Muhren, Kiwomya, Dozzell, Holland and Stewart.

I must admit it doesn’t sound particularly locked on he will come back to us, even though I think it would be the best move for all parties.
I’m sure Ashton is doing the groundwork though and his track record is exceptionally good to be fair to him.

Fabio Wardley on sky sports news
at 09:10 8 May 2024

To be fair to him, I agree with you. He does come across well.
I have been critical of Fabio this weekend but I don’t dislike him and I genuinely wish him well.
My gripe was it is one thing to jump on the bandwagon, it’s another to expect to drive the bloody thing.
But he’s just one of the best part of 10,000 fans who have rekindled their love of Ipswich or become new fans. And that’s undeniably a good thing for the club.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it happens to every club which is successful.
But you’ll always get a reaction from the die-hard supporters if you try to muscle in when the going’s good.
Being a football fan is like a rites of passage. It’s all very well turning up for a promotion party but can you do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

Seems very harsh. In the top three for Championship manager of the season and had to mould a much-changed squad together.
I’m sure they would have been in the mix next season in what would appear to be a weaker division.
Hull have got the look of a club who could fall foul of FFP down the line.
So glad our owners and chief executive have built the foundations for long term success rather than chasing instant returns.
I know they’ve achieved the Prem in three seasons but it’s quite clear that wasn’t the expectation and we’re going up with our eyes wide open.
Ashton and Gamechanger have massively impressed on that score and the love the club is getting from all over the country is not just down to McKenna and the players.
We really do have our club back.

Why is Fabio Wardley on the bus ffs (n/t)
at 14:44 7 May 2024

So if he says he is a United fan, that’s good enough for you as well?

This was doing the rounds again over the weekend when people were getting the hump about the team picture. There are other posts from him about Man United.

At the end of the day, it’s not a massive deal. The club, the players and Fabio can do what they want. But I am allowed to disagree with his showboating over the weekend.

For me, that was largely for the benefit of his own profile and, whether intentional or not, it just took attention away from the people who truly deserved it.

I imagine it was. He tweeted 10 years ago he was a Man Utd fan.

I’m sure a few fairweather fans have changed their allegiances in the last couple of years as Ipswich have got better. He won’t be the only one.

You’re right it shouldn’t and hasn’t taken the shine off the celebrations.

And of course we’d all want to be on the bus or on the pitch.

But I don’t think it’s jealousy here. It’s more the fact he’s been shamelessly front and centre throughout a party he’s kinda gatecrashed. That’s what has irritated people.

If he had taken a little more of a backseat, I doubt anyone would have been that bothered. But posing in the team pic and attention seeking on the bus just smacks of self promotion.

It’s not his moment. Remember 10 years ago he was tweeting about being a Man Utd fan.

I wish him well as a boxer and if he can generate interest in Ipswich, then great but he’s coming across as just another opportunistic fan who’s jumped on the bandwagon.

The fact he was reposting messages of support and replying to criticism on social media last night suggests the comments have touched a nerve. But sometimes the truth hurts and we learn from it.

Wardley

To be fair, that's because Ed Sheeran is a global mega star whereas Fabio Wardley is barely a household name in boxing.
One is massively benefiting us right now, the other is probably benefiting from us right now.
Ed Sheeran was also prominent when we were cr*p in League One, that's why it sits more comfortably with fans.
Wardley won't care, it's good publicity for him and, to be fair, there's an undercurrent that stretches back to the Norwich ticket saga.
That's not necessarily his fault but if you act as he has over the weekend, you can't moan if a few fans question why he is so prominent in the celebrations.

He doesn’t represent me as a long-standing Ipswich fan.

He’s just jumped on the bandwagon.

It won’t ruin our celebrations and the club can invite who they want but as I said earlier it’s rapidly coming over as cringey, forced and false.

Shameful self promotion. As someone pointed out on another thread it’s all a bit Salt Bae.

I would say he’s getting far more out of it than the club.

Boxers require self publicity and Wardley isn’t passing up on the opportunity.

Personally, as a fan, I think it’s cringey and comes over as false and forced.

And having watched his last fight, I would say his ceiling is nowhere near as high as Ipswich’s.

Maybe it’s a master plan from Ashton to stage a fight here but I’m not convinced. Just strikes me as a case of Wardley jumping on a bandwagon.

If he’s a true fan, I look forward to seeing him at Portman Road when we inevitably play in the Championship again at some point down the line.

Alternative Player of the Season
at 11:09 6 May 2024

Hladcky, Burgess, Hutchinson would all feature in my top 5 with Morsy and Davis numbers 1 and 2.

Hladcky was the most surprising success story of the season for me. When I heard Walton was injured, it was crushing but Hladcky has been outstanding bar the odd error which most keepers will make.

Burgess has just been outstanding all season. His contribution was summed up by how much we missed him when he didn’t play. Won everything in the air and his passing has massively improved.

Hutchinson is probably the player of the year from February onwards. Genuinely electric player and a proper game changer. He has looked unplayable in the last few games. We must get him back on loan.

If Norwich don’t go up…
at 11:05 6 May 2024

Sargent was bang average in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen.

He was ineffective with Norwich in the Prem.

As others have said, he is a Championship striker at best and wouldn’t improve us.

He scored on his debut for Werder with his first touch and was immediately hyped up (think Sears at West Ham) but has never ever lived up to that.

Yep loved that. Let the players, management and Ashton enjoy their moment.

Unlike Fabio Wardley who seemed to be milking it for all it’s worth.

You’re right. It will make a huge difference to them.
Knowing our luck they’ll vote to ditch parachute payments just as we get promoted!!!
It has a created a massively unfair playing field and encouraged clubs to spend beyond their means.
We have been the victim of that along with others, while the likes of Norwich have yo-yo’d between the divisions.
When people tell me if we go up, we’ll get thrashed every week, I dispute that on the grounds that we’re better than that and McKenna is a genius.
However, even if we do get relegated straight away, that one season will be enough to secure our future for years to come providing the owners maintain their calculated and sensible approach.
Undoubtedly, Norwich face tough times if they don’t get promoted this season.

I’m not really saying I want them to go up, I just maintain it’s better for the whole of East Anglia when both clubs are competing in the top division.
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen that.
I suppose the point I’m making is it is possible to hate each other but still have a begrudging respect for your rivals’ achievements.
But for what it’s worth, I don’t think they’ll win the playoffs.

Surely this calls for the biggest welcome of the team bus we have ever seen….
at 09:14 1 May 2024

I genuinely don’t think it did inspire us against Norwich. Yes we should have won that game but we looked jittery at times as if the occasion got the better of us.
If people want to welcome the coach, that’s up to them but personally I wouldn’t organise a big thing.
As others have said, keep it normal for the boys.
There’s a general consensus from fans and media that we’ve been promoted already and that is very much far from the case.
Get the job done, then celebrate big time.

I’ve always said it’s much better for the entire area and our football if Norwich and Ipswich are both successful.
Of course there’s going to be banter, of course there’s a fierce rivalry and of course we’ll laugh at each other’s misfortunes.
But the derby is something special and you want to be playing it in the highest division.
It makes it easier to attract players and the whole area benefits.
I don’t have any love for Norwich but, like Simon Thomas, I do possess the rationality to acknowledge when they have got something right.
That team that won promotion under Lambert was very good, even if I couldn’t stand Grant Holt’s tactics.
Now, hopefully, it’s our turn and whatever happens on Saturday, it would take the most one-eyed Norwich fan not to recognise the achievement of McKenna and this squad, even if they won’t admit it in public.

Coach Welcome Saturday?
at 10:01 29 Apr 2024

Spot on. Get in the ground, get the atmosphere going early.

Don’t need a bus welcome. You’ll get one of those a couple of days later anyway if we go up.

But we do need to stay afterwards and salute the team regardless of whether we’ve gone up or not.
