Brighton on Valentine's Day chaps. Where better for a romantic break? Either that, or you'd better start collecting brownie points ;-)

Hyam Set to Sign New Deal
at 21:54:58

With Skuse and Douglas getting on a bit, it makes sense to have another DM in the squad.

I think he does a decent job of disrupting opposition build up play. Useful when we're defending a lead, Skuse is getting tired, or we're away at the league leaders perhaps.

Don't think he should be starting most games though. At least not paired with Skuse and/or Douglas.

McCarthy: Brett's Even Better Than I Thought
at 17:28:48

I really rate Pitman as a player, but as I said in my post match comments, he wasn't at the races after getting heavily clattered early on. Brighton did a job on him basically.

Good management from Mick. He often uses his press comments to build the confidence of players that have suffered a knock back or are getting stick from the fans. Which is probably why we were always hearing about Fantastic Tabby ;-)

Town 2-3 Brighton - Match Report
at 13:26:55

From a Tractorboy living in Brighton. My random thoughts watching from SBR Upper:

Brighton looked really good. I watched them play like that against Bournemouth last season, but have generally they have lacked goals (except against us it seems).

The first goal was a tradmark LuaLua finish. He has already scored one exactly the same this season. Always cuts inside and puts it across the keeper - he's very good at it. You would have thought Gerks would have been ready. Still, nice finish all the same.

Thought they out competed us from the start and then the goals knocked the stuffing out of us. They were sharper and quicker to everything. They did a good job on our dangermen too, doubling and trebling up - we did not move the ball quick enough to negate this.

The Shoreham Airshow crash is a really big thing down here and Stockdale was playing with two of the victims' names on his gloves. I think the extra motivation for them combined with a bit of complacency on our part was a factor.

Pitman seemed really shaken by two early crunching tackles and wasn't at the races afterwards. He was easily beaten for every arial challenge. Surprised he wasn't subbed at half time instead of AMN. A good finisher he may be, but he can't mix it like Murphy.

Thought MM was absolutely right to bring on the Polish lad for Emmanual. I thought the former had a very impressive debut. He looks like the real deal. Chambers coped much better with LuaLua; marking him tightly and (mostly) not allowing him the same space to turn. At the moment I think Emmanual isn't ready, and I'd stick with Chambers or the new guy at RB.

Disappointed by Skuse and Douglas in midfield. They looked old and slow. Second to most balls, and unable to rouse the team after we fell behind.

Impressive performances by Fraser, Sears, McGoldrick.
Hoped for more from Knudsen.
Not confident in Gerks I'm afraid :-(

Bit worried about the language barrier. Perhaps Tommy Smith can translate. I think the dialect is similar ;-)

Seriously, he looks like a great signing. Expectation/excitement levels in my household have now reached 11 out of 10. Even our postman has put a bet on town as champions, and we live in Brighton!

McCarthy: Two Poor Goals But Performance Outstanding
at 18:30:13

"Kick & rush" ? Is that Dutch for hoof-ball?

I call it direct, pacey, incisive football. Looking forward to steam-rollering lots of other teams who like to be patient on the ball this season :-)

Sounds like it was a good performance from the radio commentary, apart from the last few minutes. I think MM is right to focus on the positive.

Hopefully this will be a lesson that our youngsters will not forget. Best that it came early in the season.

Town Rebuff Boro Murphy Bid Report
at 18:58:53

If there was no realistic prospect of us being promoted next season I'd agree with those saying take the money.

If we do go up and Murph plays a significant part in promotion the £4.5m will seem like small change; even if he never plays for us again.

By the way:

I worked out that our current front four scored over 70 goals between them last season (and McGoldrick was injured for half of it).

Living in Brighton, I keep an eye on the Seagulls. Their current strikeforce (only 3 first teamers) scored a pathetic 16 last season!

Mings Agrees Terms With Cherries in £8m Deal

Great deal; although I am a little sad to see TM leave. He was prone to the odd error, but at times he looked in a different class.

As Fraser's contract expires in 2016 we'll have the opportunity to sign him permanently without a transfer fee. If he doesn't impress next season, it's cost us nothing but wages. Good business IMHO.

Harry Was Right (Potter, Not the One From Bath). The Only Thing We Should Fear is Fear Itself
at 20:41:48

I was there in '78 and would love my son to have his own Wembley memory. However, my head is telling me that we'll fall short this time.

It's been an wonderful season, full of highs (and a few lows) and the cause of many a sore throat / hangover :-) If we do make the play-offs it will be an amazing achievement and I will be celebrating as if we've been promoted on Saturday.

If we fall short on Saturday or lose the play-off lottery, I will be looking forward to a full season of Murphy-Sears-McGoldrick tearing Championship defences apart. Automatic next season anyone?

I think that turned out just as Mick intended it to.

Football Manager says "we're going for the win" before the game, then sets up for the point. Well I'm shocked frankly! Next you'll be telling me I can't trust political partys' manifestos ;-)

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Town - Match Report

I thought it was a decent performance. We lost our way a little in the first part of the second half and Parr should have come off earlier; he had run out of steam.

The game plan was to contain after we got our noses in front, and we managed to largely nulify Wolves and stop them building any momentum. The problem was we seemed to catch the maliase a little too, and things got a bit untidy in midfield.

I felt confident we could have found another gear if we'd needed to in the second half and put their goal under pressure had we decided to.

Great performance from Berra and thanks to Richard Stearman, secret agent :-)

The TWTD League Calculator 2014/15 - Six to Go
at 13:21:09

Based on us continuing our current form and winning most, Derby continuing to be a bit hit & miss, Brentford falling a little short in a big game or two.......

I have us finishing 5th playing Watford in the playoff semis (which will scare them more than us I suspect), followed by an East Anglian playoff final and promotion!

Bournemouth champions, Middlesborough second.

I think if we can keep winning, others will slip up.

COYB :-)

Norwich City 2-0 Town - Match Report
at 18:17:04

I thought Chaplow played well when he was on, and I'm a little surprised at the reaction on here. Our whole midfield unit was struggling against their attacking midfield players (assembled at vast cost) who looked a class above.

I think at HT, 1-0 down, Mick decided to surrender the midfield and go route one. A deliberate gamble. Hence Varney on for Chaplow. Like others, I would rather have seen Wood first, but perhaps Mick felt Varney would be more of a presence.

It might have worked; and had it done so, we'd all be singing his praises. Narwich have an average back line, and we have a strike force which is good in the air and used to the long ball game (sadly). But to give Narwich credit they defended deep and in numbers.

I agree with others. We are missing a couple of top class attacking midfielders. That's the difference PL money makes.......

On that performance I expect Norwich to grab one of the two automatic slots. I think we can hold onto a play-off place, and if we do it'll be some achievement given the resources available.
