Reality has caught up with them IMO. They have struggled to contain some serious problems in Scotland, a failing Primary / Secondary educational system, not combating addiction on many fronts and generally riding on the wave of Independence. I will be interesting in the next GE as to where Scotland turns to. It used have many more labour seats before the rise of the new SNP and I can see that be reversed. Their anti-Westminster rhetoric (and when looking at the current incumbents who can blame them) has finally caught up with them. People want stability, jobs, a healthy society and for a long time they have been a one-trick pony. A bit overly simple but every debate with them always ends up with a conversation on Independance. Also Nicola Sturgeon presented herself as an antidote to the "corrupt" party in charge of Westiminster. WIth recent events with her husband must make people wonder how much of honey pot did they sample as well? They had their chance, they took their shot but ultimately time has caught them out. |

I really think you are missing the point as well. This was proactive policing as said previously, trying to defuse this situation before it became a situation. I don't agree with the wording but I don't see this as being him being discriminated against as being "openly Jewish", I see this as a known entity who is looking to cause aggravation and make the police job harder. The police wouldn't have stopped him and prevented him from crossing the street at any other time, it's just that a march was going on then and he was somebody who was known to cause aggro. What should they have done? Let him disrupt the march? That was clearly his aim to cause more problems for the police and get some media attention. |

Yes, I completely agree. My original thought was that the police were trying to defuse a situation before it became a situation, however, their heavy handiness and rubbish people skills made this into an incredibly bad and difficult situation. I wonder if that was the aim of the person. However, whatever was going on there is no valid reason for the officer to have spoken to him in this manner and used those terms. |

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. I completely disagree that my view is one sided, I often take a contrary view to try and understand the other perspective. As for this situation, I've not once said that what the Met Police did was correct, all I've stated is that I could see why they would not want to potentially place the man in danger by allowing him to cross the street while there is a protest going on, where by the nature of his religion could be a target. Whether people like it or not there are a large number of people who see a Jewish man as a representative of the Israel state and the events that have been unfolding. It a sad indictment of our times. It was similar after 911 when any muslim man or woman was see as suspicious because they were of the same religion or they looked very like the stereotypical image. Same with COVID for a while anybody Chinese was treated as suspicious. The situation in the middle east is so entrenched and complex that, especially under current conditions, it's like a tinderbox waiting for any spark to ignite argument. It was heavy handed by the police, but we all know that a lot of these protests contain extremists who are itching for some conflict to raise the sound level for their cause. There are posts saying he has already crossed the road and was going back again. There are others who said he had security personnel with him. Neither sound like a man on his way home from praying. He could have been there trying to get a rise out of the protests to play down their impact. It could all be peaceful on both sides. Fook knows the truth, which social media posts do you believe? My recent posts have been trying to understand why the Israel state is being allowed to do such destruction in Gaza without any sort of comeback. I asked you on another thread but you didn't answer, which was do you feel Israels response to the horrific attack by Hamas is appropriate? [Post edited 21 Apr 21:51]

Others have said differently, that they had already walked through the protest and were planning to walk back through it. Whose turn of events is true? Was GB there and witnessed it first hand or is he relying on third-party reporting? Or were the people who posted a different perspective there and saw it live? Always difficult in the world of social media, just because somebody posted it on the internet doesn't make it true. |

Yet you didn't answer my question about what the police should do? I know rival fans are not the same, it's a discussion around a potentially inflammatory situation. I don't condone the words or terminology used by the Met Police, it's shocking. No disagreement here My discussion is around what should have the police done in this situation? Let the chap (and his security personal if other reposts are to be believed) wander into a Pro Palestine event and sit back and eat popcorn and watch the drama unfold or try and take preventive action? How would you have handled this situation? |

Sorry you see it all the time. Don't fans from rivals clubs get sheparded by the police to the train station to avoid trouble? They don't let opposing fans mix (well certain ones) because they wish to avoid trouble. What if said fans said no I want to walk out of the police escort and mix with the rival fans? Would they let them or insist they get on the train? |

If we took religion out of it and said it was a Liverpool fan who was watching the game in a Man United end, would the official be right to move them for their own safety? Or Celtic / Rangers? (OK that one is steeped in religion). I don't think the Police can win here. Is the chap there to antagonise the crowd? He has every right to protest the protest but sometimes there is a bigger picture, and in such extreme times some difficult decisions have to be made. |
