the thing is that real preferences are only revealed once there is hard cash involved. an actual offer might reveal a quite different figure, just as with a real opportunity to buy someone might not go as high as they first claim. figures stated in the abstract are exactly that. |

that's all very well but it's their superior attitude i can't stand. grass snakes get out of the way at speed, adders hold their ground, raise their heads and assume you're going to go back and round the other way. arrogant gits. |

i'm very sorry for the pedantry but your thread title is the equivalent of a double negative. doubting that we won't do it is a good and positive thing. i am extremely doubtful that we won't do it because i, with a moderate level of confidence, think we will do it. apologies again. |

trouble is that this won't be done by parties or organisations capable of signing up to some code of good behaviour / transparency. it will be done anonymously either by fringe groups pushing one side ( a la trump hangers on) or more realistically by other groups who just want to create chaos and mistrust and despondency because they want to damage democracy. a lot of the anti-vax nonsense for example isn't pushed by people who really believe it but by actors who see it as a tool to build up up mistrust and alienation (and also make money). |

i'm genuinely interested in your take on provocation. is someone crossing the road a reasonable basis for someone else to feel provoked? is crossing the road once sufficient for provocation to occur, or does the provoker have to cross multiple times - if so how many? if the provokee feels provoked what are they entitled to do to the provoker? come on constable savage you must have thought all this through. |

i've been on lots of demonstrations. people don't all walk in straight lines always parallel to the pavement in serried ranks never falling out of step with the crowd. i have wandered about looking for people, crossed the roads to get to shops, turned back to wait for people, gone into cafes to get drinks and the wandered around to find the group i was with. i remember marching with the late strange pat arrowsmith whose marching style could best be described as unpredictable and meandering. none of that is unusual - i've seen lots of others do the same? so what exactly was it abut this guy that made that exact same behaviour "provocative"?? why did him going side to side and back to front put him at risk whereas when others do it no one notices? was he shouting abuse, or carrying an unacceptable banner, or was it something he was wearing? |

the police should enforce the law and arrest anyone on the march who is inciting racial hatred. they should have been doing this for months and not turning a blind eye. someone who is prevented form crossing the street because of his religion is the victim here and stopping him is an admission of the met's failure. |
