Ipswich Town 1-2 West Ham - Match Report
at 08:59:13

Hi Blues1: Graham2408's comment that he saw West Ham playing at Walsall on Wednesday was perfectly fair. West Ham were playing Villa at the Banks' stadium in Walsall because the Villa Park pitch is undergoing major renovation work. Anyway, enough of other teams! Yesterday sounds like a really encouraging Town performance. Great stuff.

Milne: Stay With Mick
at 18:00:38

Michael11:

While the comments posted in response to this article are perfectly understandable I do take exception to your comment about 2 joke players being signed earlier in the week. Yes, it's a punt by the club and not the proven signings that many had hoped for but if your gripe is with McCarthy and Town's owner and management, don't take it out on 2 new players who haven't even had a chance to prove themselves. I was encouraged by the warm welcome comments directed towards them in response to the story of their arrival. That's just the generosity I expect from Town fans. Calling them jokes sends out entirely the wrong message to two new guys. Don't take it out on them. This situation is not their fault. It lies elsewhere.

Mings Agrees Terms With Cherries in £8m Deal
at 10:59:07

Keanish, I think your calculator may need new batteries as a few zeroes have been dropped! An 800% profit on £10k would mean we were selling Tyrone for £80k. It's an 80,000% profit. At the end of the day though, my gut feeling is that it's a good bit of business.

Town 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday - Match Report
at 08:02:45

Blueboy1981. I'm not sure I'd quite go so far as describing warktheline's posts as europhic or exuberent, nor do I interpret his comments as saying the slump is over. He quite clearly says "for a few days" which shows he's uncertain what's to come. He's also highlighting the stats across the whole season and not over the course of a few recent games. I don't agree with everything that Mick has done, I despair at some of the dour displays and the long ball tactics. However what he has acheived on his budget is quite remarkable and we should all be commending him for that. Pre-Southampton it was hard not to get carried away given our results and position in the table. Unfortunately that's what I think has happened to a lot of fans and the realism has evaporated. We're currently punching above our weight and the fact that we have a very lopsided list of goalscorers with a heavy dependence on one single player for our goals is very worrying. Weeks ago Mick warned that the run wouldn't go on forever and the character of a good team is shown by how they recover from adversity. Again, some on this forum got carried away thinking that promotion was in the bag. At the end of the day we are all Town fans and this knocking of fellow supports by the pro and anti Mick brigades saddens me. If only supporters would steer a more realistic course and stick together.

Half-Season Ticket Sales Nearly 400
at 18:34:03

Green Army - interesting comparison but you're not comparing like with like. I take it you got the Bayern Munich figures from the Guardian article. Most expensive ticket is £540 and cheapest is £67 giving a Bayern Munich average of £303. Do the same with the Town figures and you get a most expensive of £420 (adult) and a cheapest of £271 (adult) giving an average of £345. That makes an average town half season ticket more expensive than a full season Bayern Munich one! A bit of a rough and ready comparison but your point is a good one. Reflects the overpricing of English football in general.

Keane: At Ipswich I Managed Badly
at 07:28:03

grumptoldman and runningout.

Keane's tenure was utterly devisive but at least the overwhelming majority now agree he was a truly abysmal manager for Town.

So you think that childish comments are being posted? In what way? It's very easy to call the comments of others childish but carefully avoid posting a more detailed argument. It sounds like you don't have one. His time as manager had few redeeming points and brought our club to the brink of disaster.

The "childish" comments show that town fans care and don't ever want the same mistakes to be made again.

McCarthy: No Change of Approach Despite Cresswell Cash
at 17:55:51

Get real. Seems to me that some of you are thinking that Mick should have answered the question by saying he's got plenty of cash to spend on players now. What message is that sending out to clubs, players and agents? Mick is a wily old fox who keeps his cards close to his chest. That's the sign of the shrewd operator that Town need. Careless talk hits the club in the wallet and you don't do negotiations in public. Those of you who think we should splash the cash should have a bit of patience and wait until the start of the season to see what sort of squad Mick has assembled.Refreshingly Micks signings come out of the blue unlike those of previous managers. That's the sign of a good business head.

Hello eMeM,

Yes, you are right. There were positive comments all round regarding the Reuser story and that was good to see. From that article, I'm not sure you can draw the conclusion that all TWTD readers are supportive of the LGBT movement but certainly readers those that posted replies made very encouraging comments.

As for the “Homophobic chants against Justin Fashanu, verbal and violent attacks against openly gay Town fans and low level homophobic and transphobic abuse used against players”. It would be better for Marcus to answer that as he made the statement. I don't know any other gay town fans to compare experiences with and so Marcus will be in a far more informed position to answer it.

Justin Fashanu's playing days were before the time that I started going to matches so no I didn't hear the chants directed at him. However, the verbal abuse he received is well documented and you've only got to read Brian Clough's autobiography to see what other sorts of things he had to contend with off the pitch. Clough recounts a dressing down he gave to Fashanu after hearing rumours that he was going to gay bars. "'Where do you go if you want a loaf of bread?' I asked him. 'A baker's, I suppose.' 'Where do you go if you want a leg of lamb?' 'A butcher's.' 'So why do you keep going to that bloody poofs' club?"'

Personally I've heard the abuse directed at the Brighton players two or three seasons back and I've heard other derogatory gay comments in the stands used as insults. We can all do without that. The Brighton match in particular really made me despair. There's an ongoing debate in the UK media about why so few footballers have come out and there's a general acceptance that the football environment currently isn't condusive to that. Coming from Poland, try readings the articles on the BBC and other UK news websites. I'm concerned, like others, at the falling numbers coming through the gates at Portman Road and I try and do my bit to encourage friends to attend but it's difficult. Initiatives like this can only help to change perceptions all round.

Don't get me wrong. I love coming to Portman Road and supporting Town. The guys sitting next to me are great and I love the football banter. It's certainly not a bad place to be. But, on the other hand, I can appreciate exactly where Marcus is coming from.

Marcus, well done. Your heart is in the right place and all the good you are trying to do should be applauded. I appreciate your efforts.

As for the posts ....

TangoAphaNovember - I'm a season ticket holder and gay. I don't go to Portman Road to flaunt my sexuality. Nor would I want to in the future. I think I must have missed something in Phil's article which talks about "flaunting sexuality". Could you point out the sentence for me? You appear to be completely missing the point and adding your extra interpretation.

Marcus1642 - "people being told what to think" ... so why doesn't your comment apply to anti-racism campaigns? Surely it does? This is not about telling people what to think. If you think it is, read the article again.

Rentaghost - your comment is plain juvenile and demonstrates that outdated stereotypes still persist and need to be tackled.

eMem - can you elaborate on your "homo-propoganda" comments. Exactly what do you mean?

Nitroblue - More comments that could apply to anti-racism campaigns too. Could you explain where the cut-off point is between groups that you see as a waste of time and those that perform an important function?

There are a few posts which say that there is no need for all this as we are all Town supporters. I can sympathise with this view point as, yes, at the end of the day we are all Town supporters. However for many people, gay issues aren't something that they encounter on a day-to-day basis and it's therefore difficult to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is gay. If you aren't affected by these issues it's very easy to think they are being overstated or blown out of proportion. Thankfully I've never suffered from racial abuse and I very rarely encounter it. I don't however think that anti-racism campaigns are a waste of time because I take the time to listen and understand the viewpoint of those that do suffer from such abuse. I'd suggest that posters should be using this forum as a golden opportunity to do the same.

Well done Marcus. Town is a great club with a great history and guys like you do it great credit.

Fülöp to Resume Career

Good luck for the future Marton. Am glad the recovery seems to have gone well.

Midastouch - talk about lack of empathy. If you can't think of anything positive to say about a bloke recovering from a tumour then do us a favour and keep quiet. Articles like this put football into perspective. Given the content of the story, your comment about his perceived failings is hardly appropriate. I thought town supporters had more courtesy than that.
