Take me back to league one now
at 10:43 6 Oct 2019

Like I said a few months ago - I enjoyed league one more than the championship. A rekindled enthusiasm for the weekends and going into games as the odds on favourites (unheard of in barnsley fc history)

The prima donnas in the championship - only 11 games in - is evident and I’d much rather have lumps kicked out of us in league 1

Would I swap? Yes, in a heartbeat

The one thing you lot need to do -which we haven’t done - is keep hold of a winning squad and add some experience a championship guile as the level of diving and gamesmanship is in abundance

Good luck for the remainder of the season

Sorry to board raid as I’m a barnsley fan. Ive enjoyed every bit of league one . Whether we go up or not I’m not overly bothered. It’s been refreshing going to games with a sense of confidence. You’re a big club at this level so you’ll get kicked about a bit but going to games and enjoying them again is a big plus(I go with my 8 year old ( - this is her 4th season - and yes I should be done for child cruelty) but she is enjoying watching winn8ng football for a change - granted, the visit to the bathbomb shop is part of the lure now , but good football help

For me our recruitment policy has significantly hindered us. At this level you need someone who might not be very gifted in footballing terms but who knows how to stick their boot in. Like I said with this division you seem to have to win the individual battles - especially in the centre of the park before that bit of quality comes through - I dont think you'll have it dissimilar next season - teams will try to kick you about, park the bus and the minute you go a goal up they have to chuck their gameplan out of the window and actually have to consider playing a bit of football.

i will forewarn you though - if you think the refereeing is bad in the championship it gets eclipsed by whats on offer in league one. Truly awful. No word of a lie I'm sure the linesman/referees get their days out as part of a 'gift experience' for fathers day

Ive said the same thing about our young players - although the average age of the squad is about 21/22 and is the youngest in the division if not the country - that if they dont cut it now in a side playing with confidence in the 3rd tier of english football then you can argue they simply arent good enough - at least for a few seasons.

We have lacked experience recently because of the recruitment policy which doesnt allow players to be signed over 25.

How is Kayden Jackson as a player as he never put the shirt on at oakwell after we signed him?

Going back to a previous reply on games gone by between our clubs - I remember one in about 1995 and we were 3-0 with about 5 minutes to play - mick stockwell i think got 1 or 2 and Ian marshall I think got 1. 3 goals in the last 5 minutes!!

Our problem is every time we get a decent player or 2 we sell them on and dont reinvest the profit as we were promised - buy at 250000 sell at 2m, buy at a 1m sell at 4m and so on... however its flawed in the fact that if players keep seeing you dismantling a winning formula and becoming a yo-yo club then it lessens the appeal!

We have fallen foul of a poor January transfer window when we should've strengthened but in true Barnsley promotion chasing style - we sold! (As we did in the championship a couple of years ago when in 7th in January!)

I think we have come unstuck and the loss of kieffer moore (dont laugh!!) has hit us quite hard as we have very little depth in the squad. In fairness to Moore this is his natural level for the time being (as you see with alot of championship players who are better than the division but not good enough for the PL). My gut instinct thinks if we dont get automatic (Which I dont) will see us feel sorry for ourselves and come unstuck in the playoffs as alot of the teams in it had half resigned themselves to the fact that it was their most likely route out of the division

I think you'll find League 1 quite refreshing. Our manager has us playing some cracking football at times and we'll do well to keep hold of him as someone higher up the football food chain will poach him. The main thing I've noticed is that the better players in the team seemed to be marked men and get offered very little protection from the officials. There are some proper knuckledragging tactics deployed by the opposition. You seem to have to win your battles before you can play your football

That 2000 playoff is a distant memory - all i can remember is Hignett scoring in the first few minutes, Barnard missing that bloody penalty, Richard Wright (?) making a cracking save from Hristov - how he got to that is still beyond me - and then Martin bloody Reuser breaking free at the end!! Did Mowbray score/play for you that day as well?

Genuine question....
at 12:35 12 Apr 2019

No I dont...I'll get the tin hat on! He certainly wouldnt have done any worse!

If you want a man on a budget and you had to name a few managers it would have to be Mccarthy and Warnock

Granted from what I've read before the football wasnt scintillating but you can only work with the tools you've got

The championship as per a previous reply is right in that there are now becoming leagues within a league (similar to the premiership) and I can honestly say I wouldnt be gutted if we didnt go up because you only have to look at the 3 that did last season and none of them have pulled up any trees and I fear we would be the same and its not enjoyable being spanked every other week - or more annoyingly when we outplay teams for 60 minutes and lose because of a short spell of pressure.

The finishing in Lge 1 is an eyeopner!!

I posted a while ago that I thought getting rid of MM might bite you on the harris and was pretty much told to mind my own (Which is fair enough as I'm a Barnsley fan)

Paul Lambert for me is from a similar school of managers as MM and didnt really see it as an ambitious appointment and wouldve been quite underwhelmed had he joined us. Paul Hurst fair enough - I wouldnt have minded him at Oakwell but the lure of a bigger club in yourselves proved too much and seemed to be a bit of a car crash and naive tactically from what I can gather

Is your squad good enough to be competitive next season in the ale houses? littered with academy graduates etc ?

If its any consolation its been refreshing going to games with a sense of belief that we might actually win most weeks as opposed to the opposite in the championship where we cant seem to compete.

oh dear!! read your post - I think youve proved my point when someone buys 1/50th or 1/20th of a horse!! Yet 90% of the prize money on offer is won by whom??? You guessed it - the owners with Millions opf pounds of bloodstock. who's funding who? Unfortunately I have worked in this industry and followed it for decades. You might have a picture of a horse near your user name but thats where it ends. Does 'the sport of kings' ring any bells??

WIth regards to horse racing - I think you need to look at the bigger picture!!

Manager-wise if you look at the records the last 2 have left to go onto bigger clubs and not sacked.Permanent manager wise Danny Wilson was the last to be sacked in around February 2015, prior to that we had Flitcroft. Lets be fair, you can hardly class a caretaker manager who has had between 1-3 games as a sacking!

Yes we were trigger happy - it wasnt me that pulled the trigger nor shouted for their head, with the best will in the world even as a 35 year season ticket holder I have no control over the hiring and firing of managers.

On the tinpot front, we might be perceived as that but theres been a helluva lot of talent over the last few years trod on the oakwell turf that have gone on to bigger and better clubs. This is the problem with some of the Ipswich fans in my opinion - its an overinflated view of yourselves. You realistically are only marginally higher in the league than where you are in crowd status 15/16th, likewise we are where we are on a similar footing in terms of crowd and player wages.

Please dont misconstrue someone quoting facts and a valid opinion as arrogance

And you wonder why he's left! As I have eluded to in my initial email and responses about our precarious league situation. I do exactly that but unlike yourself - I am a realist. As for your comments about MM have a bit of respect because managers as genuine as him are a dying breed in a game that is slowly becoming very horseracing-esque a middle class sport supported by the working classes and I am sure you would like to be a couple of quid behind him. What always makes me laugh about people is when they like people to say it how it is yet when they hear the truths they take umbrage!

I would have MM in a heartbeat at Oakwell and wanted him when the gig was up for grabs a few months ago, however we have JM in place and he deserves his crack at it.

Its a free society and my points are perfectly valid and from the outside looking in, they're not littered with obscenities , just merely a point of view. There will be an element of people who have read them who will probably agree but are scared to voice their opinion for fear of the resulting backlash.

The sad fact/irony is that if you struggle next season and you find yourself desperate for points you wont care how you get the points on the board be it a scruffy 1-0 or an expansive fantastic footballing 6-0. That is how we are at Oakwell at the minute - I couldnt care less how we pick the points up.

As for the goal its understandable - it was probably your last taste of success and possibly your first match. The 3 goals you scored at oakwell in the last 5 minutes hurt more in the mid nineties! At the end of the day I'm entitled to an opinion and I will watch your results with interest next season (possibly from the division below!)

I have seen you whenever you rocked upto Oakwell, totally irrelevent though.

As for the analogy it has to be one of the worst I have come across. You are a comfortable mid-table outfit who for me want change for changes sake.

I would love a manager to stay for 5.5 seasons as history tells you that the longest serving managers have success as they actually have chance to build something. If the next manager has money to spend dont you think MM would have recruited well with it?

There is a serious lack of managerial talent out there - the only 2 I can think of as up and coming are Dave Challinor and Paul Hurst

I have no beef with Ipswich but I seriously think you have got the spades out and started the digging of your own grave in a football sense

I will play clairvoyant now - you will nosedive next season without some serious transfer activity and the only next line of attack is the board for not spending enough money as you have no-one else to blame and they then become the new focus of attention. Like I said - be careful what you wish for

Exactly that! I appreciate that the recent Mick McCarthy wantaway club is probably a minority however if you were to have to handpick a manager who would keep you up on an average budget then MM would be one of the people in the frame.

I am a Barnsley fan and we sacked Dave Bassett not long after you beat us at Wembley in the Play off final, within just over a season we were relegated - funnily enough, we then had to work on a budget at this level but in my opinion now and at the time he was the right man.

I accept as a Barnsley fan that we arent going to play the best football and win countless trophies - I am a realist and unfortunately I think Ipswich have to be the same. You too are pretty much shopping in the bargain basement (albeit on a bigger budget than us) and having to either develop or resurrect a career.

I fear that unless you spend some serious money (of which that is nothing to do with the manager) then you too could well be following us through the championship trapdoor in the not too distant future.

You have let a manager walk who has nearly a 40% win rate on a low budget who has wheeled and dealed effectively for 5 years.

Lets be honest , you havent done a great deal since the Robson days (which is getting on for 40 years) and like Barnsley where you potentially always used to sit in the pecking order is dropping and a new generation of fans will only see you as a middle to low end 2nd tier club as we used to be (Obviously due to the absurd amounts of money being spent). We have spent more time than any other team in the second tier of football however do we rightfully belong there? not at all, we are now potentially a yo-yo club from league 1 to championship.

Its foolish to think you will get a new manager in and with the same group of players will play expansive, attractive open football - especially when the last group of players didnt want him to leave.

The modern era of fans seem to have lost their sense of perspective in the quest for getting to the premier league and its embarressment of riches. Personally I would rather have a well run yo-yo club that is here for the long-haul on a sustainable business model that generates good youth players that still has a connection with the fans as opposed to overpaid primadonnas in the team all coining in £300000 a week.

I unfortunately think you could seriously regret the leaving of Mick McCarthy
