Oh dear MK Dons

What a team Crawley are. If they werent pre-season favourites to go out of the football leagur, they were certainly in the top two or three.

Well two weeks ago at Colchester, Doncaster fans were singing ‘well never play you again”. They must have meant till August at least.

I think I read somewhere that Wycombe will be matching anyone in L1 for wages next season.

Angry Colchester fans
at 18:35 8 May 2024

It’s that ‘especially now’ bit of course that strikes a special note with Colchester fans who lately have seen people getting all excited who they didn’t even know liked football.

But I honestly don’t think Town’s success does any damage to the U’s. If anything it helps. People talk about football, Town is sold out, people feel they’re missing out and fancy going to a game. even after four miserable years, and despite being the team thats gone longest without promotion, crowds have been on the up rin recent seasons, most noticeably in the last few months. If the U’s could just do a half-decent season I’m confident crowds would be up to about 6 or 7000, which may not sound a lot but which is of course more than they got when finishing above Town in the Championship.

Personally I’m heartened to see the way young people are developing a positive fan culture at Colchester, with flags and so on. ( I particularly like the Lua Lua flag).

They played three 120-minute games back-to-back to win that, - fantastic achievement . Happy for Freddy Sears to be celebrating something after so many years of being in disappointing campaigns, and I hope he is still with them next season.

Slightly surprising stats from this season
at 17:38 6 May 2024

Speaking of Rotherham , I heard that the (beer-buying) Swede in goal for them was really very good, whatever the goals against column says. I wonder where he’ll pitch up next. There’s surely a place in the national team waiting for him if he gets the right club next.

More recently, I think of the fans who went to Barrow for the cup during MCGreal’s interim management, especially anyone who traveled all the way from Suffolk. They have a special place in blue heaven now.

Szmodics signed a new deal in jan
at 17:00 6 May 2024

He spent a lot longer than that at the club as he joined when he was six.

(I think I’m right in saying (and I stand to be corrected) that Cameron Humphreys also started with the U’s at that age. Whether Szmodics ever thought about switching in his youth I don’t know.)

Smodzics signed a new deal in jan
at 16:36 6 May 2024

He signed a new deal with Colchester just a week or so before Ashton whisked him away to Bristol C., to make sure that Colchester got a fair deal from his transfer.

As for this ‘hate’ stuff ( or conversely that he was once a Town fan) there’s a YouTube video from Posh tv after he scored at Portman Road which suggests he’s not that either. Interviewer says ‘must be GREAT to score against Ipswich’ and Smodiczs plays it down and simply says he enjoyed playing at the ground for the first time, having visited a couple of times as a spectator. Some of the ‘hates Ipswich’ stuff probably comes from playing along for his old school-pals who were/are of the ‘when I was just a little boy, (que sera sera tune) U’s fan variety . smodiczs himself is a West Ham fan., and bought a season ticket when he played for Pboro, figuring that WH would be playing a lot of Sundays as they were in Europe on Thursdays.

Loved his celebrating before he scored against Leicester on Saturday, and I’m so hoping he makes it to the PL now. He’s said he hopes to be back in Colchester colours one day.

There are 16 U21 teams invited into that, from Category 1 academies attached to either PL or Championship clubs. So as it stands, no.

Another competition has been mooted, with 16 National League clubs and 16 PL U21s.

"Each face tells a story". Particularly the Huddersfield goalkeeper's. He doesn't look remotely concerned or even particularly in a hurry to get off.

Thoughts of course with Tony Mowbray. Hope he's doing well, as I'm sure we all do.
