Is keeping Davis for next season now a certainty
at 14:51 10 May 2024

He's absolutely integral to how we play. I would be shocked if the club even contemplated an offer. He's got the best platform here to carry on developing and most importantly, play games.

The day he does move on, we will really struggle to replace him. Two names that I personally like are Ryan Giles and Harrison Burrows - but It's a small and difficult market for what the left back role requires in our system.

Sammie Szmodics
at 12:37 10 May 2024

If it's £12-£14m (which includes realistic add ons) then I think it's something we will look at.

One thing I really like about Szmodics is his energy and work rate. The goals aside, this is something that has always stood out. A tireless runner which is something we are going to need.

The reference from KM and other staff who have worked with him previous is a thing in football, but the 'is a premier league player' is going to be irrelevant. He will be a free agent and he's going to get a couple of offers on the table but I don't think he's going to get anything where you think 'wow'.

Contracts expiring this summer - and a little prediction for each
at 11:52 8 May 2024

Lots for and against when it comes to data though. A lot of data on midfielders these days are probably based on running stats, distance covered, sprints, tackles, % of passes completed.

I always think a good midfielder is someone who makes the ball do the running and talking. Toni Kroos for example wouldn't sit high on a data sheet but he's the best midfielder in the world at dictating and controlling a game.

Not quite on his level but in the Championship, Tom Cairney is another who I doubt is high up on the physical data, but whenever I've seen him, he's the best footballer on the pitch. Controls the game with intelligence on the ball.

Do any of those 4 clubs mentioned there really offer him a 3 year contract though? I think his best chance at a 3 year contract will be in League 1 - a similar situation to when Ladapo joined us. I think Rotherham will go in hard for him, seems like a Steve Evans type player.

Reading the comments but generally, in what world and which club does KJ go and get a big pay day?

I think too many people overhype our players and look at them through starry eyes.

KJ has been reliable when called upon and I've always respected his efforts on the pitch. But he's not starting 11 quality for a Championship side. Perhaps a newly promoted Championship side at best will have a look at him in the summer and see him as a good addition to press and offer something pace wise top end of the pitch if they're not a possession based side, but apart from that, I think he will be in a top 10 L1 side next season.

Championship players we could be looking to sign this summer
at 09:54 8 May 2024

I like the Ben Davies shout. Not sure if wages make it possible but definitely in the category of underappreciated players with valuable premier league experience.

But I think a left sided player is going to be hard to recruit this summer. Davis is guaranteed and Burgess has been one of the best centre halves this season in the league. It's a tougher sell compared to the right hand side of defence where we have been more vulnerable and need more experience that side in my opinion.

Article on Omari in The Athletic this morning

I just can't see why Chelsea would sell him permanently now. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in Chelsea's squad next season when you look at their bench recently.

Of course, I should've highlighted that.

But for everyone wanting Omari and Sarmiento back on loan, I think we will need to be more clever than that for those two spots.

- Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
- The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.

Tough, but makes it more interesting for us.

This is the best way of looking at it.

If your minutes were high in the Championship, it suggests the management trust you and you're better than your competition. For the odd exception, like Hutchinson, a young player in his first full season, his minutes needed to be tapered to reduce burnout early on - but based on those final 2-3 months for us, he's going to be heavily involved if he rejoins.

From Harness to Walton, every name is at risk. None of those players will play more minutes in the Premier League than what they did this season. From Hladky to Moore, half of them will play similar minutes, the other half will play less because we have signed improvements in competition for their places. It's as simple as that.

If we want to reward the current squad and give them their moment in the Prem without improving the squad, we will be straight back down. It is what it is but it's a real good opportunity to sign some players who we can develop and increase their value in the long term - like Davis.

I'd like us to go down a route of targeting the young English talents, developing them and selling them on to the big boys. There's a really good crop in the U20's/U21's.

I remember watching the England U21s when they won the euros last year. There are some good names that I genuinely believe we could target. Some playing abroad too.

Angel Gomes, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Callum Doyle, James McAtee, Liam Delap, Jaden Philogene etc.

EDIT: I think there's also a couple of players like Flynn Downes and Ben Sheaf I'd like us to look at. I'm praying Omari returns too but for me, he gets into Chelsea's matchday squad.

VAR
at 12:27 25 Apr 2024

Human error was part of the game a few years ago pre VAR. The officials would get some big calls wrong, but by the end of the season, the right/wrong decisions would equal themselves out and it was football at the end of the day.

It gave people talking points, it would see you pick up points or it would see you drop points because of key decisions. You'd get players & managers come out after a game to be interviewed and be frustrated - as they would 20-30mins after a game because the emotions are high.

I would like to see us return to allowing humans officiate the game and make mistakes - humans aren't perfect. We didn't praise officials enough when they got things right, but we hammered them when they were wrong and called for VAR. Look where we are today, no better off at all.

VAR
at 11:07 25 Apr 2024

This happens all over a football pitch though - grabbing an arm or grabbing a shirt for a second or two before letting go, leaving a little something on someone just as they've released the ball etc.

It's not VAR that's the problem. It's the people in charge and how they are directly using it that's really killing the Prem in this country. I don't want much European football but whenever I do, I never see them have VAR issues and they're much much quicker and efficient at using VAR too.

Sadly, football is becoming too soft and nice. It's a contact sport slowly being morphed into a non contact sport.

Anyone else feeling a little bit deflated this morning?
at 08:09 23 Apr 2024

Not coming back at you personally when I say this but I really don't understand the deflation in general this morning. We can only control what we can control and that is the 90mins against Hull, Coventry and Huddersfield to do our own jobs first. We knew after the Boro game that Leeds and Leicester were going to play a couple of games before we next kicked a ball so it was always a sit back and watch job.

The pack of cards we have been dealt with by the schedule could either be a blessing in disguise or it didn't work in our favour at all.

Lots to remain positive about. It's in our control if we do our job.

Non league day
at 14:55 19 Apr 2024

It's not non league day tomorrow but I'm surprised there hasn't been some comms released from the club to support non league clubs in Suffolk tomorrow with no game ourselves.

AFC Sudbury have a massive home game in a bid to stay up. Needham Market final home game before stepping up to play in the Conference North next season. Ipswich Wanderers with a home game, Bury Town at home etc

Norwood and Oldham
at 11:50 19 Apr 2024

For what it sounded like at the time of his departure, it appeared McKenna did like him in the end but didn't play him enough down the middle to offer him a new deal.

He did well at Barnsley, but the move to Oldham was a strange one at the time. I presume it was down to the money offered and he got a decent length on the contract for his age - 3 year deal maybe?

Harwood- Bellis is on the shopping list apparently
at 08:33 15 Apr 2024

Or it could've just meant Southampton didn't want to sell one of the best strikers at Championship level when they knew they were relegated.

I think the rumour originated before Southampton were relegated anyway. Had they stayed up, they probably would've sold Armstrong to a Champ side.
