... and after being managed terribly by Lambert and Cook.

We can only but guess just how badly, too.

Incredibly positive comments from both Ashton and McKenna.

Agree.

He's had a phenomenal career. Really made the most of his talent, and still doing in his late 30s is impressive.

Not sure how impressed he'll have been at his wife blowing a big chunk of his fortune on legal fees though!

Amazing really that we still have options at RB with Williams and JD both not available.

4 high quality RB options in the squad. Now that is positional depth!

Financial results from last year

'Only difference is it is selling to get within the £39m loss limit rather than to balance the books.'

Which is totally mad really when you think about it. We will have to sell players to meet an artificial target of losing a still vast amount of money. And we're seen as one of the best run ones!

This is not a comment about us, by the way, but about football. It is a totally mad, mad world, funded by hope, debt and ego's.

It's a fair challenge. I can't think of any team that did this. Must be very rare to even try.

Though surely it is very rare precisely because changing the whole team is so risky.

But if you are Mr Demolition and throw them all under the bus, well, then you have little choice...

£250m + valuation. A mystery to me
at 17:33 24 Mar 2024

I have no idea what an exit strategy is if things don't go well.

A fire sale, so sell the players, sell the training ground for housing? They wouldn't get much.

It feels like a one way bet that things go well. And at the moment there is a lot to like! But it could be a bumpy ride.

£250m + valuation. A mystery to me
at 12:23 24 Mar 2024

Thanks, good replies.

What I'm hearing is it is all about the brand value, isn't it. Nothing to do with the actual finances.

And our brand is currently on the up and up. And there aren't many 'brands' like us.

So what people think it is worth, is what it is worth.

Still find it odd though!

£250m + valuation. A mystery to me
at 11:23 24 Mar 2024

The last 2 years have been astonishing. Great football, goals galore, we all know the story. We're on the up - it is brilliant!

And yet, it is an absolute mystery to me how we are suddenly worth £250m. It seems totally crackers.

We make a massive loss, year after year
Our wages alone are very close to 100% of turnover
And we're a relatively small operation. £22m turnover last year, maybe about £30m this?

Asset wise, our playing squad is worth what? Perhaps £50m, and that's giving generous valuations to Davis, Chaplin, Burns, Woolf, Hirst etc. And if we sold them we need to replace them, obviously
We don't own our ground
Lots of investment is still required, including a new stand

If and when we go up, we'll have to spend to compete
The bizarre financial rules of The Premiership mean we can't spend, spend, spend as they will then dock points. So it will be hard to compete

I'm delighted people want to invest, it is fantastic, and I totally get the excitement of what is potentially ahead.
But I sure don't get the valuation!

Is Paul Cooks Chesterfield promoted tonight?
at 11:16 22 Mar 2024

I agree, it is about the players.

I would suggest that any decent manager can handle 'player power'. That is, by definition, the job of a manager! To manage players. You need the right ones and then to make them gel.

McKenna is a master at this, so far. Burley was excellent until his final year. Royle fantastic. McCarthy very good in his first few years, though not at all at the end. Robson, obviously the ultimate.

When they fail to do this e.g. Hurst, Lambert, Cook, Keane etc. then it all comes tumbling down. Sometimes slowly, sometimes very fast.

It's not just what you do, it is how you do it.

Yes, most of the players, possibly all, needed to go. But do it with class, with empathy, with positivity. It costs nothing and creates a better ongoing environment.

Compare how McKenna managed the exit of Evans this January. Lovely words on what he achieved at Town (which could be argued wasn't actually that much really) and what he can still achieve. Leaves everyone feeling positive.

Agree 100% with the thread

Also shows that the sending club needs to commit to the process.

I suspect we were pretty excited to get Dane Scarlett, and he too could have benefited in a similar way.

But Spurs sent him too late, so no pre-season. They also cup-tied him so he missed chances to play proper matches in the League Cup.
Add that he was always selected in England U20 squads so missed lots of time training with the squad and for personal coaching with McKenna's team.

Then Spurs recalled him, just as he would have had a great opportunity to make an impact in late Dec and January with Hirst's injury, and Ladapo clearly about to leave.

Spurs were muppets.

Long Mynd and The Stiperstones. Gorgeous hill walking, not steep so ok for kids and never too busy.

Ludlow is a lovely market town, foodie heaven and a castle.

Feel he might stay if we go up. To experience the Premier League, plus builds his profile for a move to Middle East afterwards.

If we stay down, I'm worried

I agree, probably not for the Premier League

I do think a number of our players will be very attractive to teams coming down with Parachute money, plus any of Leeds, Leicester, Soton if they don't go up this year.

They have rich pockets, much richer than we'd be allowed to be due to the rules - and players all have agents looking for the best deal.

McKenna is key. Players hopefully want to stay and play for him, unless the ££ is stratospheric.

As I said above, I think a lot depends on what the individual players all want.

They have power and may want to move on if a Premier League club calls, or to get better contracts in the Championship, or just to get more game time.

I hope they don't go, but it is a short career, however much fun they are having with us.

I hope it is not a revolution, though these days is not all about what we want as players have lots of power too

I see three groups of players that could leave:

* the 5 loans - obviously

* where we'd like to upgrade.
Perhaps 6 or 7 with the names already mentioned e.g. Ball, Donacien, Aluko, Camara, Ladapo, Ahadme etc

* a final group of players who see opportunity elsewhere.
They have lots of power and will be in demand, especially after this season, and fit in various groups:
- those who could move up e.g. Davis, maybe Hirst
- those who might want to cash-in on their raised profile with better and longer contracts or might want to live someone else. Guessing here, maybe Burgess, Hladky, possibly, shudder, even Morsy?
- those we'd probably like to keep, especially in the Championship, but who want to play much more regularly.
Lots of names here e.g. Walton, Edmundson, Harness, Jackson; possibly Humphreys, maybe even Taylor

Another interesting summer ahead...
