Town Closing in On Loan Signing of Blackburn Skipper Travis
Friday, 5th Jan 2024 09:21

TWTD understands Town are in advanced talks regarding the loan signing of Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis with the deal expected to be confirmed today.

The 26-year-old, who plays as a defensive midfielder but also right-back or left-back, is expected at the club today to complete the formalities on his switch to the end of the season.

Travis is currently out of favour at Ewood Park having started only two of the last 10 matches and hasn’t begun a Championship game in his preferred central midfield role since the start of October.

Born in Whiston, Travis was with Liverpool’s academy where he was a defender until joining Rovers’ youth set-up in 2014.

He signed his first pro deal with Blackburn aged 19 in 2017 and made his senior debut later that year, former Town skipper and coach Tony Mowbray having converted him into a midfielder.

Travis, who is 6ft tall, has now made 189 starts and 35 sub appearances for Rovers and signed a new deal running to 2026 in March 2022 and that summer was named club captain.

We understand Town were among a number of Championship clubs who were keen to sign Travis on loan with Millwall, who had previously shown interest in the summer, and Preston among the other suitors.

Travis, who will become the Blues’ second signing of the transfer window and fourth loanee, is likely to come into the squad as cover for Sam Morsy, who is suspended for the next two Championship matches, both in terms of playing position and also leadership qualities.

The deal looks set to be done in time for Travis to be in the squad which travels to AFC Wimbledon for tomorrow’s FA Cup third round tie.

For some strange reason I started taking a more detailed interest in Blackburn following the game at Portman Road, I hadn’t really known what had been going on there for the last two years but I was very impressed with them as a team and their footballing style in what was a really good well balanced match. I indulged my thoughts on who might be a good fit from their side at the time and I was very impressed with Travers on the day thinking he might be a useful replacement for Sam Morsy should we loose him. I also after that belatedly picked up a comment that was made before the game that I missed at the time that the battle between him and Morsy could be very interesting!!!! This somewhat reinforced what I had seen and thought. Strangely though Blackburn seem to have struggled in gaining the points I thought they would gain based on their efforts on the day, I thought they promised in that performance to be threatening the play off positions. It may be that their effectiveness has been hampered by the refusal to play Travers who not long after disappeared from their regular lineup. From what I have since researched on Travers this looks to me to be a superb signing, we can see how it works to the end of the season, but let’s remember that the likes of Ball, Aluko, Evans, Williams are unlikely to be here next year and Loungo isn’t getting any younger. KMck said when he bought Jack Taylor that he had a specific role in mind for him which on what was said seemed to me to be closer to a number 10 than an 8. I do think Chaplin and Broadhead need to be kept on their toes and I wouldn’t have a problem occasionally resting either of them to get more out of Jack. Chaplin is more of a marked man and some different options in the number 10 role may be helpful.

I work with a Blackburn Rover season ticket holder. He's gutted about this and can't fathom why on earth they are loaning him out.

Happy New Year
Apology accepted

I only mentioned Brerton Diaz because of the Blackburn article and I always thought he was decent - I see he has signed for Sheff Utd now. I will write out some lines as a punishment for my TOSH comments wasting your time and apologise to all others so angered by my ignorance.
I kneel before your Total knowledge.

@JackNorthStand - never said he was a bad footballer did I fella, just making the point we’re 2nd in the league and he hasn’t started for a team 15 places below us for quite some time. I wasn’t aware of him having a fallout with the manager. Sorry for upsetting you

He's come here to play games otherwise he might as well stayed at Blackburn. McKenna has been resting Luongo for some games especially when there's two in a week so i think there will be some sort of rotation.

This may not be a "star" signing, but in case you are wondering, we are not going to be able to sign that kind of player on our budget. We live in the real world, folks. Rather, this seems a very astute, carefully considered move on the part of our excellent manager, who "knows what we need." I think he will add commitment, steel and experience, especially at times when this might be lacking due to injury or suspension. Welcome Lewis (assuming the deal actually does get done!)

This move was probably being brokered when we thought Mass and Sam could be off on international duty. It still makes sense as the long hard season is starting to take its toll on some of our guys. Davis, Clarke, Burns and Broadhead were beginning to show signs of fatigue which as we know can lead to injuries. The last thing we want is for Sam or Mass to pick up an injury without decent cover. We can’t look after our players if we have to over play them. Kieran knows exactly what we need. COYB

Gosblue the move is there because Morsy has two game ban and they can’t both play every game unfortunately every week that showed over the December period when mass needed to be rested. This means we can bring mass out every now and again for a rest both morsy and mass are in their 30’s now

@blues1 sorry, no. It was a silly joke based on a line of dialogue from the film Taxi Driver (1976), because of his name. For future reference, I will never ask for clarification (of the information within an article without reading it) in the comments section as that would be a ridiculous thing to do.
