Town Closing in On Loan Signing of Blackburn Skipper Travis
Friday, 5th Jan 2024 09:21

TWTD understands Town are in advanced talks regarding the loan signing of Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis with the deal expected to be confirmed today.

The 26-year-old, who plays as a defensive midfielder but also right-back or left-back, is expected at the club today to complete the formalities on his switch to the end of the season.

Travis is currently out of favour at Ewood Park having started only two of the last 10 matches and hasn’t begun a Championship game in his preferred central midfield role since the start of October.

Born in Whiston, Travis was with Liverpool’s academy where he was a defender until joining Rovers’ youth set-up in 2014.

He signed his first pro deal with Blackburn aged 19 in 2017 and made his senior debut later that year, former Town skipper and coach Tony Mowbray having converted him into a midfielder.

Travis, who is 6ft tall, has now made 189 starts and 35 sub appearances for Rovers and signed a new deal running to 2026 in March 2022 and that summer was named club captain.

We understand Town were among a number of Championship clubs who were keen to sign Travis on loan with Millwall, who had previously shown interest in the summer, and Preston among the other suitors.

Travis, who will become the Blues’ second signing of the transfer window and fourth loanee, is likely to come into the squad as cover for Sam Morsy, who is suspended for the next two Championship matches, both in terms of playing position and also leadership qualities.

The deal looks set to be done in time for Travis to be in the squad which travels to AFC Wimbledon for tomorrow’s FA Cup third round tie.

Fantastic. Leadership, championship experience in spades. Cover for Morsy and fullback positions. And a loan so if it doesn’t work out no harm done. Two deals in before the weekend is stellar work.

Wasn’t expecting this one but totally trust KM & MA given their transfer record. My guess is that there will be 2-3 more and as these are loans a likely chunky fee for a striker, but what do I know. Love the way MA does business and a polar opposite to the clowns we used to have at CEO.

Morsy was playing regularly for Middlesborough when we signed him and in his last game for them got sent off completely out of character. This is a very important signing as it will allow McKenna to withdraw Morsy from games when on yellow cards and tighten things up when leading late in games gives the manager more flexibility.

Bloos you have no grasp of football do you.

“ he plays for a team in a lower league position than us he must be a bad footballer “

Makes sense on a number of levels:

- No real squad cover for Morsy’s short term ban or future injuries if unlucky.
- As much as I really like Luongo his performances have dropped off a tad recently.
- I am not sure how Taylor fits into the type of midfield and playing style that KM favours.

Much needed competition for Morsy, Luongo, and Taylor. Experienced and with leadership qualities and a good age. Guess Humphreys could go out on loan now.

solid signing this! years of championship experience under his belt and lets face it - while we love Morsy, he picks up cards - this adds extra cover in our current type of injury situation and rotation is key for the next half of this season, so a mixture of the 4 centre half's we would have, will help with keeping the lads fresh. as long as they are all signing on the same hymn sheet, so the quality shouldn't drop.

An out of favour captain - strange! sounds versatile which would be useful.

I've stopped trying to guess whether signings will work out or not - all I know is that I trust our current management to get it right. It's so nice being able to do that!

I can't umderstand any of the negative comments on this one. We need cover for Morsy; Evans is out & Ball has not done enough. Taylor & Humphreys are very differemt players, who don't have the presence or the drive to fill in for Morsy.
We know from the number of Championship games that he has played, the length of the contract he was given & the fact he was made captain, that he is up to the task, and that it is due to a personality clash with the manager that he is currently out of the team. He is also an experienced option for both full back positions, which is an area that we are suddenly looking a little vulnerable in.
Blackburn have been a strong Championship club over the period that he racked up those appearances AND was made captain; this is an astute piece of business by a manager/board who are looking to ensure that no stone is left unturned in the push for promotion.
The hunt for centre forwards will continue in parallel with moves like this, so there is no.point in suggesting that a striker is bigger priority right now; that's a different, more difficult, market, particularly during the January window. I have faith in McKenna & Ashton to pull at least one rabbit put of the hat in that pursuit too.

People or should I say the fickle wannabe championship managers need to understand we have NOONE that can do Luongo and Morsys job in the middle NOONE! So this guy is literally cover for those two guys which we really DO need. If you want to buy a player who will serve in the prem as well you’re looking at 10 million like Winks at Leicester as funny enough we don’t have prem parachute payments to be able to do that. What would some on here rather spend the little money we have on a defensive link up midfielder or possible striker?? Honestly some on here are unrealistic or just plain stupid!

Just believe ! None of us,surely, can have the inside knowledge of both Club Football and the situation and character of player needed or/ and available ; but KM and MA quietly get on with the. job in hand !
Looks like yet another very astute import !

Blooos This signing does not stop us making other signings. There is an obvious drop off especially when Morsy is not available, and Travis seems to fill that gap. There are two more matches that Morsy is suspended for and he will probably pick up another one before the end of the season. KM had to act because we have not been good enough without Morsy mostly due to his leadership.
I suppose this is either a trial-like loan and we can buy him if he impresses, or if we get promoted, we might be shopping in a different isle.

@Bloos - He hasn't been playing due to a fall out with the manager. Blackburn fans are not happy he is leaving!

PortmanTerrorist KM is in quite an awkward position with signings considering we have a very realistic opportunity to get promoted automatically or via the playoffs. In the Premier League we will be able to afford and attract a different level of player. Don't be surprised if most signings are short-term fixes.

Europablue added 11:26 - Jan 5
Blooos Middlesborough were a league above us last when Morsy joined us, now they are a fair few places below us and don't have a better player than Morsy. What is your point?
It doesn't even mean Middlesborough were wrong to sell Morsy. We have built a team around him and have had two managers who really appreciated his qualities and play(ed) to his strengths.

Europablue added 11:31 - Jan 5
If I were the other managers in the league I'd be scared spitless of KM getting to January!
He really supercharges the team.

Why lots of negativity? This is a great signing, let's trust McKennas judgement, he hasn't got much wrong since he's been here.

There are so many moving parts with all signings that you just have to sign the right players whenever the stars align and obviously as early as possible makes most sense.
I am not expecting us to get a striker in until the last week of the window. I'm expecting a loan from a Premier League club who will decide late on that the player is not needed now they have brought someone else in.
