More Than 40,000 Set to Watch Season Opener
Tuesday, 1st Aug 2023 11:14

Town’s opening Championship game of the season at Sunderland on Sunday evening looks set to be watched by more than 40,000 fans.

The Blues have sold their allocation of 2,000 seats at the Stadium of Light, while, according to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have sold 37,104 of the 37,692 home tickets made available for the match, which is being shown live on Sky Sports with a 5pm kick-off.

Adding corporate tickets to those figures, the total watching the game on Wearside is expected to number more than 40,000. The capacity of the Stadium of Light is 48,707.

Town, who will be facing the side managed by two Blues legends, manager Tony Mowbray and his assistant Mark Venus, will be playing their first game at Championship level since their relegation in 2019.

Sam Barrott has been appointed Sunday’s referee. The West Riding-based official’s last Town match was the 6-0 thrashing of Charlton in April.

Very poor allocation by Sunderland although I believe it could be down to problems in the past with away fans, not us though. Hopefully they will release more but unlikely due to timescale. If we can take 5000 to Barnsley on a Tuesday night we could easily have emulated that.
Going by Sunderland's allocation for us if we go by the same basis they should get an allocation of around 1230 which they will not be happy about.

Pathetic allocation for town fans, that’s not right! What if any are the rules for away allocations?

Not a sell out any more?

Only 2,000 out of 48,000 capacity?! Just googled it and it's the minimum they can allocate... clearly I'm biased but would have thought that needed to be higher.

Guess that 2000 is the min they have to allocate.
They must have thought it would be a sell out with their fans or they are scared of the noice the away fans make.

Sounder if they will up the allocation now it’s not a sell out

Through the Official S Club ive heard the allocation is being limited there this season because of trouble last season with people chucking stuff down from the top tier

I'm a Scotland-based Town supporter of old and having no Season Ticket for Portman Road, or any 'Away Priority Points', all the Town tickets had gone before I could apply. I have, however, managed to secure one of the few remaining 35000(+) tickets from the Sunderland site. I shall. of course, be scarfless, and biting my tongue.

A few factors have contributed to there not being enough tickets, and the ground nowhere near full..
promotion..
expectations..
FOMO..
game not on Town TV..
the new membership points system..
the close season (clubs are asleep or on holiday) - first league game comes around very fast..
genuine surprise that this many tickets would sell out with Sky, back of beyond, 5pm ko on a Sunday..
the quality of some of our pre-season wins..
Innsbruck cup winners..

So the ground will have huge swathes of empty seats, whole sections (potential crowd trouble, policing, stewarding costs saved), and empties in our section = those who didn't manage to offload the tickets they bought to get memberships points.

Some of this stuff comes with the territory of getting used to becoming more successful, but some was avoidable.

The articles coming out of Sunderland about the stadium and where to put away fans - surely the lower tier section below our supporters in the upper tier is still free for us to get another 2,000 tickets - as some away fans would lower objects and abuse on to the home fans below - but I guess we would have needed to buy those upfront, there's no sending them back. No way would we be selling another 2,000 tickets. But if we'd taken 4,000 tickets there weeks ago - they would have mostly gone. Lessons to be learned here, yes, but nothing much will change.

If 2,000 is the maximum allocation, full stop, then, as other(s) have said, we should give only 1/24 of our capacity to Sunderland when the Portman Road fixture is played.

Like you Pegasus, I’m based north of the border and limited to what games I can attend. Unlike you I haven’t managed to secure a “home” ticket as I was kinda hopeful that there would still be briefs available when they went to general sale. But as Facefacts as alluded too a number of factors have conspired to make the possibility of that happening remote!

What’s the minimum we can give Sunderland when they come to us? If teams give us a decent allocation, we should reciprocate. If we get 4% then right back at you. That’ll be 1200 then.

Wear your scarf, Pegasus. I would. But maybe don't celebrate too openly when we score! -:)

The EFL rules for the Championship say
Each Club must make provision for at least 2,000 visiting supporters at every home match or such number as represents 10% of the Club's certified capacity, if less than 2,000.

North of the border as well, not been to a match in years, in fact it was a 0-0 draw with Gillingham a few seasons ago (both teams woeful). It was that bad footballingwise that my Dad & I said no more, well not until the standard got better. Suffice to say, I'll be arranging my visits to coincide with match days this year, can't wait to see the new pitch as well - so much good work is being done.

Let's get those signings sorted to aid defence, as much as another striker might be nice, our front lines are going to be worrying others already. Hope Walton's okay.
