Warne: Disallowed Goal a Massive Turning Point
Saturday, 1st Apr 2023 19:00

Derby boss Paul Warne felt the Rams’ disallowed goal just after half-time was a massive turning point as the Blues beat his side 2-0 at Pride Park.

Eiran Cashin flicked a header across goal and into the corner of the net but referee Anthony Backhouse ruled it out, apparently for a foul on Christian Walton, although replays suggested former Town striker David McGoldrick sought to play the ball at the far post when in an offside position.

“First 10 minutes we were poor and nervy and the last 10 minutes we underperformed but the other 70 I thought we were pretty good,” Warne told his club’s official website.

“Ipswich scored a very good counter-attack goal that if I wasn't a manager in the other dugout I'd have applauded.

“The lads came into this game not fully confident but I thought they played their way into it pretty well and then the second half I thought we were brighter and had a bit more confidence and had a right go.”

Regarding Cashin’s disallowed header, he added: “The massive turning point for me is the disallowed goal. If we'd have scored that, the place was alight and that's how games swing.

“It was disappointing that that wasn't given and we were trying to throw bodies forward and we were always open to the counter.

“Fundamentally they are another couple of windows down. This time last year they were getting the foundations. Earlier in the week I said I thought they were the best team in the league and today I still think that.

“We've dropped out of the play-offs but luckily for us in the [late season] games I don't think we play anyone apart from the last one [Sheffield Wednesday away] of Ipswich Town's ilk.

“We've got seven games to go and if we can win a lot of them we give ourselves a right chance.”

Explaining what he was told about the disallowed goal by the officials, he continued: “I couldn't see anything wrong with it. The fourth official told me there was a foul on the goalkeeper and we watched it back, there isn't a foul on the goalkeeper. People will see that themselves and that is a massive decision.

“An official has apologised going up the tunnel but these are monumental decisions. They apologised to me for the Plymouth decision too but they are massive decisions.

“Today I am hugely disappointed with that because I do believe getting that goal early in the second-half would have given us a right boost and we'd have gone for it.

“It's disappointing when a linesman from 40 yards away thinks he's seen something and now realises he might have not done.”

Regarding Town, he added: “They are an outstanding team. They've got Freddie Ladapo who I had [at Rotherham] and he's an unbelievable striker who's on their bench. He can score 20+ goals at any level at any time.

“They've got threat up top, they've got pace and they've got guile, which is the nicest compliment I can give. That's what you get when you go shopping.

“That's where we want to be. I could see the way they wanted to play when I played against them last year and they've stuck with it and 12 months later they are bearing the fruit because their performance was very good but they had to be very good to beat us.

“If we had to play them in the play-off final if we get that far then hopefully the decisions might go away and it may be a different outcome.

“We've got a lot of opportunities to put it right, we've got another game next week so let's see what we get.”

Agreed a big turning point. 95% of the time against us over past 20 years it seems.

Nice, decent praise from Paul Warne. Credit to him.
Probably the right result though.

All being well we will avoid a playoff final against Derby,by fingers crossed 🤞 getting top 2.
Hopefully Derby might do us a favour and stop Sheff Wed winning their final game.

Gforce. They go away to an improved Oxford next. Derby the least of their concerns at the mo.

Didn't watch the game but apparently McGoldrick was either obscuring Walton's view or took a swipe at the ball but missed while in an offside position. According to the interpretation of the offside rule the decision to disallow the goal was correct. Also Chaplin should have been awarded a penalty and was told be a Derby player during the game that it was stonewall but nothing given.

Nomore4.......Fair point, hopefully Oxford will do us a big favour next week and at the same time,we have to ensure there is no complacency from us against Wycombe.( I'm sure Mckenna will have that under control!)

So Derby played a decent game, didnt create much and we defended decently other than that disallowed goal.
A game we wouldnt have got anything from last year, the boys are getting there and the effort was superb.
I must say as a fan that was just like a 70s win at Norwich, so proud we can take 3100 to Derby and probably could have taken 6000 again.
We are getting there

Praise indeed……particularly when coming from a Budgies fan!

Looked to me that Cashin piled through Burgess as he was about to clear the ball. That was the foul, nothing to do with McGoldrick and Walton.

Some praise but he still takes a sly dig at us buying players. If he wanted a purse, he should have probably reconsidered taking the reins at Derby.

I watched mcgoldrick second half and he was clearly I instructed to impeded Walton during corners and free kicks. Their disallowed goal was 100%correctly ruled ou5 because Walton was clearly fouled. So Warne can shove his “ turning point “ comment. There were some reall6 cynical fouls out there today by Derby players ( that was the only way they could stop us), and ref didn't book one of them!

Well played Town. Just bloody awesome result

Forget his Norfolk and Norwich links, Paul Warne does speak well and made some respectful comments which must have come hard given his natural instinct to dislike Ipswich. Fair play to him.

Exactly Arnie, McGoldrick was fouling Walton on every corner. If by some miracle it wasn't this time, all the better, surveys them right for trying it every time.

Annie.... I believe that a Derby player was booked within the first 10 minutes.

Jugsy, I think it's a fair comment to mention that we have assembled a team and spent 12 months getting them used to the system. We have spent a lot of money on some very good players, although we made quite a lot selling some of our better players previously. We are definitely at least a couple of windows ahead of Derby. I expect Derby to be challenging at the very top next season. It's not obvious that Derby will even make the playoffs and if they do they will have to contend with two out of us, Plymouth, Wednesday and Barnsley, so I very much expect them to be in League One still next season.

You could argue that when that guy took Wes out with a flying elbow and only got a yellow that was also a Turing point which prevented Bolton being beaten 5 nil.

Burgess was taken out at the corner, surely that was enough to disallow the goal?

Bergholtblue. Yes, he was, and could easily have been red as it was an elbow. If ud been there tho, ud have seen some bad fouls, that received no punishment from the referee at all. Broadhead wqs dragged to the floor 1st half. Nothing more than a word in the ear from the ref. 2nd half, avery late tackle in broadhead, at least a yellow, maybe red. Nothing. One of their players clearly dived out on the wing, trying to con the ref. Ok, ref didn't give a free kick, but no card. Yet every time we wasted any time, out came the yellow. At least 2 of the 3 of those were in response to the crowd booing. Now, not saying he was totally wrong with those yellows, but why is it, we get punished for that, yet team after team come to portman road, and getvaway with it. And for much worse timewasting than we did.

Some really nice comments from Warne. But if he thought Derby played well yesterday, then I'd hate to see them when they play poorly. Yes, they had a decent spell early in 2nd half where they put us under a little pressure, but we never really looked in any danger. Other than that, they were poor.

I know that we always like to justify a poor decision when we've had a 'break', but does anybody really think McGoldrick fouled Walton......I mean really?! I doubt that would have been given in an under 8's ĺacrosse game. Back to youtube to see if Burgess was indeed fouled. I'd be outraged if that had been awarded against us. Apparently it all evens out, so I'm nervously awaiting the scandalous penalty thats gonna be awarded to Cheltenham next Monday !

Cashin shouldn't have been on the pitch to score anyway. That foul at the beginning should've been a red

Warky81 added 21:59 - Apr 2
Mr Warne get over it to be honest Cashin should have been sent off after 2 mins for deliberate elbow on Burns it was disgraceful. Ref bottled it and probably disallowed his goal knowing bloke should have been sent off long ago. Again another serious error that goes against us similar to Sheff Wed's sending off that never happened. Also we thoroughly deserved our win Saturday and the beat whole Derby team fairly comprehensively.

The final conclusion of all of this is that we well deserved the victory. The disallowed goal was not a "massive turning point." Who's to say that had the goal been allowed, this would not have inspired US even more to go for a win? Football results are not decided by what might have happened. Using your logic, Mr Warne, 3-1 or 2-0 to us - take your pick!

I don't see how anyone here can possibly argue that the Derby goal was rightfully disallowed. McGoldrick doesn't do any more than briefly stand in-front of Walton. It was a let off for us, but christ have we been owed one of those decisions for a long time! To even it out, the ref turned away a stone-wall penalty for us. But Warne is right, had the Derby goal been allowed - who knows what the result would have been.
