Plymouth Back On Top as Pilgrims and Barnsley Win
Tuesday, 21st Mar 2023 22:08

Plymouth and Barnsley were the winners of this evening’s two games in League One, results which see Argyle return to the top of the table.

The Pilgrims won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley, the Lancastrians having been reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

In a topsy-turvy game at Oakwell, the Tykes went into a 2-0 first-half lead, former Blues striker James Norwood netting the second, before Wednesday pulled the scoreline back to 2-2.

However, with the Owls looking the most likely winners, a defensive slip led to Barnsley restoring their lead and in injury time they scored again to win 4-2, ending the Owls’ club record 23-match unbeaten run and knocking them off the top of the table.

Wednesday and the Tykes have a game in hand on the Blues and two on Argyle.

The 2 best teams in L1 will finish in the autos.
ITFC and Barnsley.

All very exciting indeed and for sure we need to win some big games. But remember any team having to play someone who is fighting for survival is not an easy run in as some suggested by some. We are capable of beating the big teams as they allow us to play football and express ourselves. I really believe there are some big twists and turns still to happen and although its not a given we will achieve our goal, I do however have great confidence in what this team and excellent manager have achieved in a relatively short period. Great football, atmosphere and vision for this great football club and now the memories of MaCarthy and Keane are distant ones. Keep it going Town!!

100% focus has to been on our own games. It's tempting to try and figure out will Wednesday win this game? Is this the game Plymouth slip? Does Barnsley's chance end with a loss?

Derby on 1st April is the only game that matters right now. We take care of our own business and things might just work out in our favour. Yes it could take a record breaking points total to go up but I've seen nothing in our last run of games that suggests the manager and his players are not capable of taking us to 95 points or beyond.

We can't do anything about other results only our own. We have to carry on doing what we are doing. Obvious, but true. Both Plymouth and SW are within catching distance. Going to be a very interesting run in. Our goal difference could be vital in the end. Or will we rue all those draws. I still believe we can get into top 2.

We can only concentrate on our own game and make every effort to win all our remaining games. There is know point in worrying about the teams above us as the ending is out of our hands. We need to do everything we can to get behind the team at home and make it difficult for the opposition. Our away support is magnificent and I'm sure will make as much noise as possible.Whatever the outcome at the end of the season we are good enough to get promoted.

Blueboy - thanks for your insight. And there was me thinking could get promoted by losing or drawing the rest of our matches.

The reality is there are 4 teams chasing 2 automatic promotion spots. All of these teams are averaging at least 2 points per game, which would usually be good enough to win promotion. Whichever teams miss out will be unlucky, let's hope we're not one of them.

Good result for us i'd say, as it moves us a little bit closer to the top two places. Effectively, third is no better than sixth.

Delighted tbh, looks like the L1 title race just opened up! We have a real shot at becoming Champions!

Can't see Plymouth or Wednesday dropping enough points in the run-in, unfortunately.
If they do, it will be a miracle.
Imagine a Town v Barnsley play off final?
I was 23 years younger the last time I was at Wembley!

Having a tougher run than the others (except Barnsley Vs Derby last day - could be decider) might actually benefit us if we're on form but still end up in the playoffs vs autos.

I think if we had the team we've got now from the start we would have won this league. On Saturday we beat a good Shrewsbury team and looked a class above them. If the unthinkable happens and we don't get promoted we must bend over backwards to keep them together.

9 games to go, realistically Town would need to win seven of those i think for automatic promotion, i'd say, which is do-able, albeit with a few tough away fixtures in there.

Of course this could change depending on dropped points elsewhere, but the run ins of the three other sides in contention look markedly easier than Ipswich's, think the Barnsley game could be pretty pivotal come the end of April, although we'll probably have some idea then of which way things are heading.

Would be criminal not to win every home game from here on out, which equates to 4 of the 7 wins, it's navigating through the remaining 5 away games that will determine the final outcome.

Win at Derby next week and things start to get interesting, as of the four games that follow, three are at home and the away is at Cheltenham, so another maximum points haul could be in order.

Excitement/apprehension in equal measure for the rest of the season.

Clint eastwood. What do you mean, how can plymouth have 5 loanees? Amyone can have 5 loanees if they want to.

Third place is better than sixth. You get to play the bottom club of the group away first game. correct me if wrong.

There is not a team in this league we cant beat and although the table tells a different story i dont think any team in this league is actually better than us.

We are were we are in the league right now because of our own arrogance and inconsistent nature at time this season. Some of this, or most, is down to the whole sale changes to the team and those new players finding their place in the team over the course of the season at different stages. But too many times we have played too slow and not come out of the blocks until it really matters, i guess thankfully over the last 7 games and hopefully going forward that seems to be changing.

We are getting at teams quickly and staying composed, i feel like we are really going for it at the minute and i can definitely feel a change in the way we are playing, i feel confident in us again in the sense that we are not going to be slow, cumbersome or passing side ways or back all of the time.

We are and have always been this season a very good side, things have taken time to click but where we are as a club is light years further forward than the marcus evans era where the cancer just grew and got worse.

Recent highlights that have obviously had an impact are injuries but thankfully they are coming back slowly, but on the positive Massimo Luongo, what a breath of fresh air. Leaves everything on the pitch and battles for every ball he is near. What ever happens from now his impact has and will be significant.

I am trying to stay level headed on where we will finish and i of course hope it will be one of the top two spots, i dont trust the play offs, but i have confidence in this team and i really do think we are the best in the league but we currently suffer the problems we have caused for ourselves and also in one or two games poor decisions by the ref.

My biggest gripe is Plymouth though, i really dont think they are that good, they have had a couple of good loans, but the amount of worldy goals they have scored and deflected goals is unreal. If they go up i really dont think they stay in the championship to be honest, i could be wrong on that and if so fine but they have had such a rub of the green for a lot of the season. It has not all been luck of course and ultimately if you are up there you deserve to be but i really feel luck has favoured them this season.

We have the Best goal difference in the league, and our great record of wins in the last 6 (so we show all greens) But we are still 3rd !! So we must carry on with this great run.??

Apart from Barnsley we should expect to beat any of the teams we face in the run-in. If it has to be the play-offs, we need to make sure we're the form team going into them. Outside the top four, there is no one we should fear. COYB

Wednesday peaked too soon imo,but Town is peaking at exactly the right time.Plymouth may just blunder into promotion but will just bounce back.
