Town Taylor Move Active as Whittaker Pilgrims Loan in Question
Tuesday, 3rd Jan 2023 10:51

TWTD understands Town remain in active pursuit of Peterborough United midfielder Jack Taylor.

Reports over the weekend claimed the Blues are set to launch a £1 million bid for the 24-year-old, who was initially linked with Town in the summer.

As reported last month, the Blues made an enquiry regarding Taylor with talks having taken place and we understand it remains an ongoing situation.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, speaking just over a week ago, insisted that Taylor wasn’t for sale but may ultimately find Town’s interest difficult to turn down.

Taylor joined Posh for an initial £500,000 from Barnet in January 2020 with the fee likely to have increased towards £1 million with top-ups.

Hammersmith-born Taylor has since made 106 starts and eight sub appearances for Posh, scoring 16 times.

Taylor, who spent time on loan at Hampton and Richmond while with the Bees, qualifies for the Republic of Ireland via his grandfather and has been capped at U21 level. He received his first senior call in November 2020 but is yet to make an appearance at full international level.

Meanwhile, Swansea boss Russell Martin has revealed his club’s owners could be about to recall Morgan Whittaker from his loan at Plymouth, TWTD having revealed that the Blues were eyeing a potential move for the 21-year-old in November.

Quizzed on whether there was scope for Whittaker to return to South Wales last night, Martin said: “I didn't think there was but I think there probably is because the ownership group and Josh [Marsh] and Julian [Winter] have an opinion on that with Morgan.

“It has to be imminent because of the clause in the loan. There's been a lot of conversation about it. If he comes back, he'll be welcomed into the group.

“He has been playing at Plymouth in what is probably the most competitive position on the pitch for us, with Olivier Ntcham, Luke Cundle, Ollie Cooper, Jay Fulton, Joel Piroe when he plays there.

“I think it's a really tough position to get in but, if he does come back, he comes back with the mentality that he wants to fight and get in the team and we'll have to take it from there. I don't have a definitive answer for you on that.

“I don't have a definitive answer for you on that and I'm sure I will get told in the next, well probably this evening I would have thought, and if not it will be tomorrow.

“He has done brilliantly, really well. If he comes back hopefully he can build on that momentum and see where it takes him here.”

Martin believes Whittaker would ideally prefer to stay at Plymouth: "I think his preference would be stay and play football where he's guaranteed every week.

“But he's our asset, he's the club asset and there is a bigger picture in terms of what Josh and Julian see in terms of his value, in terms of what he might be able to add here, and all that stuff. We will just have to wait and see. I'm quite relaxed about it either way.”

Despite the earlier interest and much speculation over Christmas, it’s not thought Town are imminently set to launch a move for Whittaker.

The loss of nine-goal forward Whittaker would be a big blow to Argyle, who top League One going into January.

Elsewhere, it's expected that Crystal Palace forward Malcolm Ebiowei, who was linked with the Blues over the weekend, will join Hull City on loan.

It maybe the case Whittaker would prefer to stay at Plymouth, but I don't think Martin actually said that. His preference would be continue playing regular games, which I assume he would get here.

Would be a huge blow for Plymouth if Whittaker did get recalled. Can't imagine they'd recall him and then loan him to us. The player would more than likely want to continue the good work he's doing at Plymouth. He's been electric for them. Would benefit us immensely, if he wasn't there for the second half of the season, but as I always say, better for us to concentrate on strengthening our own cause.

I suspect Whittaker will want to play at the club who gives him the most money - if all things are equal he has the relationship with Plymouth.
based on yesterday if Taylor can get us some goals, give extra drive and can see a pass from centre mid then he's a welcome addition. Hard to drop Morsy or Evans though.

We won't get Taylor for £1M considering what MacAnthony thinks he's worth...big shame if Whittaker goes back to Swansea though and even bigger if he stays at Argyle. I reckon we'll have to keep searching...

@TimmyH, recalled to Swanea to be sold (to us hopefully)🤞🏻
This could be the Marcus Stewart type signing i.e. one that improves us and damages a rival!

@MickMillsTash- Whittaker will get paid the same no matter which club he's at. The only variance is the percentage the parent club/loan club pay. Clubs don't pay loanees more than their contract. I'd be surprised if Whittaker comes here unless Swansea recall him and we either offer to pay a bigger percentage of his wages than Plymouth can or they decide to sell him given Martin says they have a lot of strikers ahead of him.

I suspect we will have to pay significantly more than I'm comfortable with to get Taylor. Davis at £1m is huge for this level but his background was championship/premiership working with a world class manager. None of that applies to Taylor. Would he be a good player for us? Probably, I just think Posh will want way too much. We need to get up this season but if we are spending multiple 7 figures it needs to be someone who's a slam dunk to be effective in the championship and outstanding in this league.

Not sure what people are talking about with Whittaker, if he comes here it will be a purchase with a long term contract.
The Whittaker deal, especially now the Swans have stated hes likely to come back, looks really likely. If we get Taylor too, great

I'm assuming Swansea will want someone to buy Whittaker- no point recalling him and loaning him out again unless to a higher division club
if Swansea want Plymouth to pay a higher % of wages then I am sure that gets negotiated before a recall happens.

If ownership have a say then money is involved. Don't believe we would get traction with a simple loan proposal, unless it was a loan with purchase option.....which may be distinctly possible. Proven at this level and scores the goals that we currently miss, so whilst any player is a punt, this is as safe a bet as there could be and be happy to see something happen.

Not sure about anyone from Posh though....always over-hyped and over-priced !

It looks likely that Whittaker is going somewhere if he is recalled, but no guarantees he's coming here. It could be a play to force a permanent deal to Plymouth, like we went for with Walton (which happened after talk of a recall circulated). I would imagine lower Championship clubs will be circling, too.

Could all this talk be a smoke screen for the players Ipswich are really looking at - we know that they keep things close to their chest - so why not drop a hint or two for the press to have a field day while they spend time getting the real deals done - Just a thought!!

He's not going to come here just to be rotated every other week, he's the main man playing every week for Plymouth - why would he come here.
Before anyone says because we're a bigger club and all that - just take a look at the table!!!!
Just being honest

As an add - I really hope we do get him though.

I mentioned to a Posh supporting friend of mine. This was his reply:

"On his day, a great midfielder - but dropped off form for us this season. Could be he knows a move is coming though. Young and gifted though - good shot on him."

Should go in hard for Whittaker imo. No doubt would strengthen our attack and as a bonus weaken Plymouth, win win.

Thought Taylor had a 10 million price tag on his head🧐 why not concentrate on the real concern at the minute scoring goals!!!
Striker pls!!!!

We always seem to get turned over by Posh in any transfer dealings. At least we now have a professional setup when it comes to our transfer business . Even so I would be very surprised if we get a deal done for Taylor for £1M. Is he worth more than that ? Im not so sure.

Buying Whittaker would be amazing but I think even less chance of getting this one over the line. His form will have alerted teams from the Championship capable of offering a larger fee and better terms. It does sound like the Swans are ready to sell him which seems odd to me given his form. Also when you factor in loyalty (am I being naive) and what he is achieving at Plymouth will he really want to make the move to one of their biggest opponents in the same season ?

I think it most likely that we will do other business. However all that said I hope Im wrong.

Think we will get Taylor, but it won't improve us much,
Whittaker is a pipe dream and paper talk,
We won't get him,

If Whittaker comes here Freddie can kiss goodbye to starting. Too often for me he's out of position behind a defender or to the side and avoiding contact,, and he seldom snaps up half chances. That said I like him but to me we definitely need better. Same for KJ who is a useful specialist and I'd keep him but not an out and out CF either. Would have loved to see what TJJ could do week in and to but my guess is thats never going to happen for us now.

Can take it or leave it with Taylor, personally. Rather get the chequebook out for Clarke-Harris even though he'll be pricy and is getting Championship attention. I can't think of the last player we got from Peterborough that blew us away, which is my concern. Paul Taylor, Wordsworth and Gwion Edwards the only ones I can think of. Happy to be proven wrong though if he did come through the door. COYB. This is our year

*correction... Wordsworth was Colchester - apologies!

I thought according to our leaders that irons were hot in the fire already. Plymouth have two announced and we have none. Irons not as hot as we thought or more complicated than intimated

Red herrings? Can't see us paying what McAnthony would want for Taylor and no chance with Whittaker. The lad up top at Bristol Rovers look promising. Experience and beef required at CM.
