Town Taylor Move Active as Whittaker Pilgrims Loan in Question
Tuesday, 3rd Jan 2023 10:51

TWTD understands Town remain in active pursuit of Peterborough United midfielder Jack Taylor.

Reports over the weekend claimed the Blues are set to launch a £1 million bid for the 24-year-old, who was initially linked with Town in the summer.

As reported last month, the Blues made an enquiry regarding Taylor with talks having taken place and we understand it remains an ongoing situation.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, speaking just over a week ago, insisted that Taylor wasn’t for sale but may ultimately find Town’s interest difficult to turn down.

Taylor joined Posh for an initial £500,000 from Barnet in January 2020 with the fee likely to have increased towards £1 million with top-ups.

Hammersmith-born Taylor has since made 106 starts and eight sub appearances for Posh, scoring 16 times.

Taylor, who spent time on loan at Hampton and Richmond while with the Bees, qualifies for the Republic of Ireland via his grandfather and has been capped at U21 level. He received his first senior call in November 2020 but is yet to make an appearance at full international level.

Meanwhile, Swansea boss Russell Martin has revealed his club’s owners could be about to recall Morgan Whittaker from his loan at Plymouth, TWTD having revealed that the Blues were eyeing a potential move for the 21-year-old in November.

Quizzed on whether there was scope for Whittaker to return to South Wales last night, Martin said: “I didn't think there was but I think there probably is because the ownership group and Josh [Marsh] and Julian [Winter] have an opinion on that with Morgan.

“It has to be imminent because of the clause in the loan. There's been a lot of conversation about it. If he comes back, he'll be welcomed into the group.

“He has been playing at Plymouth in what is probably the most competitive position on the pitch for us, with Olivier Ntcham, Luke Cundle, Ollie Cooper, Jay Fulton, Joel Piroe when he plays there.

“I think it's a really tough position to get in but, if he does come back, he comes back with the mentality that he wants to fight and get in the team and we'll have to take it from there. I don't have a definitive answer for you on that.

“I don't have a definitive answer for you on that and I'm sure I will get told in the next, well probably this evening I would have thought, and if not it will be tomorrow.

“He has done brilliantly, really well. If he comes back hopefully he can build on that momentum and see where it takes him here.”

Martin believes Whittaker would ideally prefer to stay at Plymouth: "I think his preference would be stay and play football where he's guaranteed every week.

“But he's our asset, he's the club asset and there is a bigger picture in terms of what Josh and Julian see in terms of his value, in terms of what he might be able to add here, and all that stuff. We will just have to wait and see. I'm quite relaxed about it either way.”

Despite the earlier interest and much speculation over Christmas, it’s not thought Town are imminently set to launch a move for Whittaker.

The loss of nine-goal forward Whittaker would be a big blow to Argyle, who top League One going into January.

Elsewhere, it's expected that Crystal Palace forward Malcolm Ebiowei, who was linked with the Blues over the weekend, will join Hull City on loan.

I think under the current ownership and especially under the current manager-the signings we make always seem to come out of the blue. I don't believe I saw anything about us signing Harkness, Keogh, Edwards to name a few-before they arrived. Leif Davis I remember being linked. But I'm
Expecting any signings to be wrapped up before much of a press sniff of them. So I doubt we'll get either of these much like we're not getting either of the palace players. I'm
Excited to see who we do get though!

Reading the quotes above from Martin, it seems very much like Whittaker is being recalled to be sold; the only question is if it is Ipswich that are the buyers. Worst case scenario & it's to someone else, it'll still weaken Plymouth for the second half of the season.
Martin wasn't expecting him to come back & doesn't think he needs him, as they are well served already in his position, so it has to be a recall to sell. The only bit that concerns me is ”Martin believes Whittaker would ideally prefer to stay at Plymouth ...". Either way, it seems the next 24 hours will tell us.

If the past 'players of interest' articles are anything to go by (although both Taylor and Whittaker would be welcomed here) surely this is smokescreen stuff?

The first we'll know who's coming is when they arrive at Portman Road!

To simplify for you, Swansea will be recalling him from loan to be instantly sold to Ipswich or another club (Ipswich are interested)

Forget the money, the wages ect, it's as simple as that

We need to start buying Plymouth's best players before they get too far ahead of us in the league. I still don't think our player recruitment is particularly good. I look at the likes of Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth what they've achieved. I know they've got money but the important thing is they haven't wasted it. Much of their success has been based on players from abroad who don't demand such high wages and are better value for money Two names spring to mind Thyssen and Muhren and they didn't cost a big fee.

According to Wikipedia, both Whittaker and Ladapo have played 25 times and in terms of League goals Whittaker has 9 and Ladapo 7.

We need players who

1) are significantly better than what we have now,

2) are of Championship quality (in case we are promoted),

3) are ready to play now (which rules out young untested players),

4) are within budget both fees and wages,

5) want to come here (recent results make that harder as players will be more interested in signing for a Club that looks like a promotion certainty.

Just a thought, Connor Wickhams contract up at Forest Green so is a free agent, with regards us having room for 3 players in, would he be worth a punt till end of season, 9 goals in 20 appearances in a struggling side.

Taylor is not a player who I remember as being a real quality performer but I'm happy to be proved wrong. For me we have a Jewell in Humphrey's who would be an excellent fit as our number 10. Yes he's still fairly lightweight but he has incredible football intelligence way beyond many others.
I'm asking the question. Is Taylor significantly better than Humphrey's ?
In relation to Whittaker it appears to be that he will be recalled and sold but would he choose Town ?

Any truth in the rumour that Jamie McLaren was in Ipswich today?

I would love to see whittaker here!
He is playing regularly and very well scoring goals!
But coming to ipswich and with KM rotation with players he might not be keen on the idea I don't know!
Good news either way

Ladapo has scored 7 in the league and 3 in the cup games not bad for a free transfer, I've been impressed by him and he has slotted in well as a team player as have others. In my opinion we need someone who has that little bit extra, that certain spark, who will team play but also take on the responsibility when needed to by going it alone.
Would like to see another defender also, couldn't understand the acquiring of Keogh and still can't really, he has looked rusty at times but not surprised as his playing time has been limited.
A certain player doesn't seem to be the the one he was since he got called up for his country either.
Just saying as I see it imo.
