Morsy Left Out of Egypt Squad
Sunday, 18th Sep 2022 21:13

Town skipper Sam Morsy has been left out of Egypt’s final squad for their friendlies against Niger and Liberia during the international week.

The Blues have had two players called up, Wes Burns by Wales and Greg Leigh by Jamaica, and a third would have allowed the club to have postponed next Sunday’s live-on-Sky game at Plymouth.

Speaking at yesterday’s post-match press conference following the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, manager Kieran McKenna said the club were yet to hear from Egypt regarding Morsy, who had been named in a provisional squad.

“I haven’t heard anything [from Egypt], so we can only assume that he’ll be with us next week and we look forward to the game,” he said.

Now the Egyptian FA has confirmed the party for the two matches with Morsy omitted.

The midfielder has won seven Egypt caps with his last appearance as a sub against Eswatini in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November 2018. Egypt face Niger on September 23rd and Liberia four days later.

Egypt squad: Mohamed El-Shennawi (Ahly), Ahmed El-Shennawi (Pyramids), Mohamed Sobhi (Zamalek), Karim Fouad, Mohamed Abdel-Moneim (Ahly), Omar Gaber, Ali Gabr, Osama Galal, Mohamed Hamdi (Pyramids), Mahmoud El-Wensh, Ahmed Fattouh (Zamalek), Hamdi Fathi, Ayman Ashraf (Ahly), Tarek Hamed (Ittihad, Saudi Arabia), Mahmoud Hamada (Pharco), Eslam Eissa (Pyramids), Ahmed Zizo, Emam Ashour (Zamalek), Mohamed Ibrahim (Ceramica Cleopatra), Abdel-Rahman Magdi (Ismaily), Mahmoud Trezeguet (Trabzonspor, Turkey), Omar Marmoush (Wolfsburg, Germany), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Ahmed Kouka (Alanyaspor, Turkey), Marwan Hamdi (Masry), Mostafa Mohamed (Nantes, France).

Let's get on and play the Plymouth game.

Agreed. Play it. Ok, it may go against us, but a fixture congestion and midweek trip to Plymouth is not going to benefit us. Keep with the rhythm of the season

If Morsy isn't getting in the squad would love to see what these Egyptian midfielders playing in a pub league look like!

Morsy an absolute star, don't understand why his countrymen cannot see his ability…..we can function without Burns and Leigh, but not without Morsy, so bring on Plymouth…

Morsy is undoubtedly a good player. With pace he'd be a great player. He's painfully slow at times and moves the ball through the middle of the park a little too slowly also. Every time I've watched Egypt they've been very slick, and that there is probably why he's not involved.

Fingers crossed Burns stays on the bench. Off the pace against Sheffield Weds. Get the game played!

We've got decent cover in the squad thanks to McK's careful groundwork. Let's play!

Club comes first in my view. It's Town who pay his wages and we need him more than do
E international friendly game.

Burns could do with a break in all honesty. His call up isn't helping anyone least of all him right now.

Might be a welcome break for Burns. Seems to have lost his mojo.

interesting to see that Plymouth haven't conceded at home so far, we are on sky, gonna be a tough one!

i would take a draw.

yes indeed, difficult game, especially as they have home wins against some of the expected top sides `Peterborough, Bolton, Bansley' already.

Strange how Morsy is left out of the Egyptian side but an under performing Burns (this season) gets into the Wales one...what's the bets a third player gets called up at the last minute?

If we do draw then we need a win against Pompey.
Interesting to see Barnsley and Bolton are in the top 6 now.

There are 10 top 6 teams IMHO so it's going to be a very tough season. Take nothing for granted

You don't have to be a Olympic sprinter to be a good footballer. As Steve Foley said to me once the ball moves faster than anyone can run. Glenn Hoddle was a prime example and Jim Magilton to a lesser extent who remember got us into the Premier league in that epic game against Bolton. On the subject of Morsy possibly playing in league one is not appealing to the coaches of the Egyptian team. I wouldn't class Morsy as slow he's playing in a very congested central midfield position but when he does get the chance to break forward he looks ok to me . All that matters is he's a class act and we are lucky to have him.

Sadly it is better not to have our players involved in internationals. We need them fighting fit for the Town matches.

Plymouth will be missing Azaz, a big player for them this season, so although its only one player, they are arguably worse affected than Town who have good cover for Burns and Leigh probably wouldn't have started anyway. Having just been booked on Saturday, taking Davis off was probably both a precaution against him getting a red and losing him for Plymouth through suspension, but also to ensure that he ia able to play a full 90 minutes against Plymouth with no Leigh on the bench.

Morsy will be cheesed off, as a lot better than those in his position picked for Egypt squad. Their loss
