Town Launch Third Strip
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2022 14:18

Town have officially launched the all-black third kit leaked by sponsor Ed Sheeran earlier this lunchtime.

The club say the strip has been designed in collaboration with Sheeran and is available for pre-order now.

Paul Macro, Town's head of retail operations, told the club site: “We thought it would be great to get Ed involved in the design of our third kit.

“The idea to turn the graphic found on the front of the Equals album into a tonal colour to match the blackout styling of the shirt really appealed to us.

“After playing around with a couple of different concepts we settled on the pattern running through the sleeves and also the short panel. This gave us a really unique, smart looking kit.

“Ed loved the final designs and it’s great to finally show off this collaboration to our supporters.”

Sheeran added: “I got asked to help design the third kit for Ipswich. I wanted to make something with a subtle homage to the album but also be a cool bit of clothing people around the world would want to wear. I love it.”

The first 3,000 fans who pre-order within the first two weeks will receive a limited edition Ed Sheeran Official Top Trump card which will not be sold separately.

Town say pre-orders should be dispatched towards the middle of September with the shirts available on general sale towards the end of September.

64 years old, haven't bought a shirt for 35 years, sat in a queue on line for 90 minutes, paid my 50 quid, absolutely f"ing love it. The club is on a journey folks. Get on the bus.

I quite like the shirt, although I think it looks more like a training top than a match day shirt if I'm honest, but having thought about it over the last 24 hours, I find myself agreeing with Arnie M.
We have a blue and white home kit, with a splash of red, and a very different away kit in the slick red and black kit (which I purchased and found somewhat unforgiving for the older fan who is still carrying his extra lockdown weight). There is no circumstance this season where we will clash with the opposition while having those 2 options.
In previous seasons, where we have had a white shirt with blue trim as our away colours, there was clearly a need for another strip, particularly if playing against Blackburn or maybe Sheffield Wednesday, Wycombe or Bristol Rovers, but even then we tended to go with the previous away kit when required. The manufacture of this 3rd kit was purely a revenue generation ploy, capitalising on the buzz around the new ownership, management & the involvement of a massive international music star.
So don't buy it then you'll say; fair enough, I respect everyone's personal decision on doing so or not & I wouldn't dare suggest that the club should not do whatever it wishes in how it is run & marketed. I suppose I'm just a bit disappointed in how blatant it is, at a time when money is getting really tight for so many & the cost of these shirts are so high - those of you old enough to remember the recording of Freddie Shephard calling the Newcastle fans mugs for paying £40 for a shirt that they manufacturer for £5 might know where I'm coming from.
Those of us who are adults & spend our money in whatever way we see fit is one thing, but there has no doubt been a bit of pressure on parents over the last few hours, who will have already splashed out on one or both of the other 2 shirts/kits for at least 1 child, to go to the well one more time following this exciting announcement.
I'm delighted by the professionalism of how our club is now being run, the appointment of the manager, the team around him & the squad assembled; I also love seeing the ground being addressed properly after years of neglect, and I know these things cost money that has to be generated, but I fear that some fans are going to be finding supporting the club that they love, and passing that love on to the next generation, a more & more expensive pursuit into the months & years ahead.

I also think it's a bit cynical that the shirt came out with zero expectation, 2 months after the other 2, when pretty much everyone who would be getting one would have already purchased it. They may now will be inclined to go again, but would have only purchased this one had all 3 options been released/on presale in June.
Good sales strategy for maximum return from each individual? Yes certainly, & I guess we are a business with a responsibility to maximise the return to the shareholders.

Great marketing by the club and nice to have a third shirt as we seem to be one of the only clubs at any level that never get one. The bigger clubs may shift shirts by signing star names, Ed, is doing that for us single-handedly, whilst also putting his own money into the club! Great stuff.

while I agree with most on here about needing a 3rd shirt, I suppose this one needs to be looked at differently, think of this as more of a fashion shirt rather than a practical one. we could end up seeing more general wearers of this particular shirt due to the name is carries, so young fans of Ed and general football supporters who like the look of this shirt. honestly, its a very good marketing approach - you see a fair amount of teams these days perusing influencers to promote the brand due to style and flair - look at PSG - they have a huge catalogue of clothing assigned with Jordan - people wear Jordan clothes and the PSG emblem is plastered over so much product, it's now a huge fashion brand. AC Milan is recently another, signing with the designer off-white. while all this is very vain and superficial, it brings in funds from non supporters - which in turn can create a great profit margin, as those people are not invested in the games we play and hence do not buy tickets and season tickets. marketing the Town badge in a new way to different consumers is only practical and a great source if income.

Len Brennan. Yes previously ehen needed we have tended to go with the previous away kit, as u say. We've also on occasion used a 3rd kit that wasnt made available ot the fans to purchase. But that was because we didn't have a 3rd kit to use. We'll, now we have as many clubs do. And we may well use it at the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, rather than have both teams wearing stripes. May even alternate it with the away strip on occasions. Who knows

Why are there so many fans moaning about a shirt. If you don't like it don't buy it. I bought the home shirt because I love it (in fact I love it so much I bought 2) I didn't buy the away shirt because I personally don't like it - but I've not moaned about it.
I bet it's the same people moaning about the lack of investment ME put in (even though he lost loads of millions each season) keeping this club afloat. These new investors will no doubt be losing money too so they have to find new ways of generating money to make it worthwhile to invest as they are investing peoples pensions.
For all those saying it's going to put pressure on parents to buy it for their kids - really? If you can't say no to your kids and raise them up as spoilt brats, continually giving in to their demands, then you are not very good parents! I had nothing when I was a kid as my mum was too poor and I turned out all right.
I'm going to buy this shirt because I love it and think it can be worn more casually with jeans as a piece of fashion clothing.
Well done Ipswich Town and Ed Sheeran on creating this sexy looking shirt.

Robsonwark. Ur spot on with that. And can't win with some of our fans. Been a couple of times in the past where we've had to use a one off kit as we not had an actual 3rd choice one. And fans moaned that they weren't made available for fans to buy. Now we have one, they moan about that.

Does anyone else remember the days when the Refs were the only ones allowed to wear black? I only ever had the one refs kit, which lasted my entire reffing career, which wasn't that long, as i went back to playing as i got p1ssed off at being sworn at every week.

Robsonwark & blues1 - I'm completely comfortable with you disagreeing with any opinion I or any other fan on here expresses; I am even happy to be corrected or proven wrong when that occurs, especially if it means that the club is doing better than I had expected, but can you please be fair and not rush to label those you disagree with as "moaners" etc when they identify something that they perceive as an issue, either on-field or off. It's simplistic & disrespectful to do so.
I'm happy to see an opposing position & enjoy the discussion when its based on the merits of the argument, as opposed to 'playing the man', which will just encourage me or others to respond in kind.

RB - I have kids, good kids who have grown up far from spoilt brats, but the reality is that is a different more consumer driven world today than it was back in our day, where image & branding have a major impact on young people. i don't like it & the impact it has through peer pressure, but I have to recognise it & the fact that they have access to a technical, global world & not just the small local communities of similarly impoverished households of our youth. Saying no & that being that is not as easy as it used to be.

When you're top of the league any thing goes . If we were struggling and this third shirt came out people's opinions would be completely different. I quite like the idea of a black shirt we could wear it when a former player had just passed away.

I like the strip but i make a light hearted comment about it being a nice look under a dinner jacket(which i still do) and the down markers jump all over it oh well there's people and there's people good luck in your tiny humourless lives.

It's different and it looks great. Great to see us moving with the times and positive direction. There is certainly a new belief & feel good factor around this great club.
