Everton Defender Pennington Close to Joining Blues
Friday, 31st Aug 2018 14:33

Town are hopeful of completing the loan signing of Everton defender Matthew Pennington ahead of this afternoon’s 5pm deadline.

Terms have been agreed on the deal, which we understand is a loan switch until January.

Leeds, where the 23-year-old spent last season on loan, Blackburn and Wigan are also said to have shown interest in the 6ft 1in tall centre-half or right-back.

Pennington, who also previously had spells on loan at Tranmere, Coventry and Walsall, made 15 starts and nine sub appearances during his stint at Elland Road last season.

He has made seven starts - six in the Premier League - and one sub appearance for Everton, having come through the ranks after joining them as an 11-year-old. His only senior goal for the Toffeemen came in a 3-1 Merseyside derby defeat at Anfield in April 2017.

The Warrington-born defender will become Town's sixth loanee - manager Hurst's 12th summer signing in total - and could go straight into the team facing Norwich at Portman Road on Sunday with Toto Nsiala suspended after his red card appeal was dismissed.

I will wait until I see him play , rather than listen to Leeds supporters who were on a nosedive at the end of last season , so can hardly blame this lad for that.

Tilt will be cheaper in January as he can't start to negotiate terms with clubs for when he is a free agent next summer (well that's normal logic but who knows about Oyston!).
Should Pennington perform ok, then long term this may be beneficial to us to have a stop gap whilst we wait for a cheaper deal for Tilt.

Pennington: Positives; Dirty Leeds enquired to take him back, has over 20 games last year in this division, rated at EFC. Downsides; another younger player, team dependent on too many loans.

Maybe we're going to make it permanent in January if it works out?

Would be a big risk to throw him in on Sunday. I still prefer the Knudsen centre back Kenlock left back or Woolfie next to Chambo formation. Very disappointed we did not go the extra mile for Tilt but Blackpool are a basket case of a Club and will get nowhere near what they would have got come the January window. Serves them right if he sees out his contract to the end of the season then leaves for nothing. Good luck Matthew show us what you are capable of.

So I presume Walters, Graham & Pennington will all be going in to the squad for Sunday.

Who's he going to leave out from Chalobah, Edun & Donacien so that we stay within the 5 loan quota?

Personally, I'd leave out Donacien and go with either Spence or Emmanuel.

Matt Portman - Blackpool have a year extension on contract so won't be on a free hopefully they will be in money trouble so have to sell him

its the ITFC way , last minute lucky dip for the last few prizes in the barrel ,lets hope theres a good one still there. Im not optimistic of getting a good result Sunday, and i fear a bad result will see the wheels starting to wobble on the wagon again .Survival is the objective this season but to keep the fans on side we are going to need some results going our way,and points on the board.

Tilt''s agent has agreed terms and he will sign for on a FREE in January and then join in June unless their mad owner takes £250k and let's him leave early.

just a question - nothing more, nothing less; How many people have actually seen Tilt play and how many have seen Pennington?

dugoutdave.

None is the answer. They're all experts on here though.

A good signing, good age, premiership player had loan spell with Leeds so knows this league as well.
If he is as good as Conally was last season then it's a decent signing.
Now let's get ready & beat the scum on Sunday!!⚽️

From what I recall he is reasonably quick, so would suit PH's high pressing plan better than McAuley and can fill in as a full back. Dont think we should be depending on him solving the problem defending at set pieces. Chambers has done well as LCB.

People must realise that Blackpool are making it VERY difficult for a player - under contract - to throw his weight around and try and orchestrate a move. Part of me says “good on them”... you know Blackpool don't wanna sell, why would they give in if he is their best CB?

Move on, if his desire to come to Ipswich and work for PH is that strong we'll see him when his contract expires... if we haven't fell out of love with the idea and started squirting over another CB.

dugoutdave and positivelyportman - saw the game when he played for Everton in 2017 when he scored at Anfield in the 3-1 loss and a couple of times last season (remember Leeds do tend to get shown on SKY quite a lot), I remember him playing against Brentford last season.
