Waghorn's Derby Move Confirmed
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2018 10:38

Derby County have confirmed the signing of Martyn Waghorn on a three-year deal for a fee of £5 million rising to £7.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal Derby's interest in Waghorn early last month.

Waghorn, who has been handed the number nine shirt at Pride Park, admits the uncertainty regarding his future had been praying on his mind in recent weeks.

“I was getting different calls, being fed different bits of information on a daily basis to be honest,” Waghorn told RamsTV.

“It’s quite difficult [to concentrate] when all that is happening. I still had training and games to distract myself from that and at that point, your family also help.

“I have got a really good family network around me and they help me a lot. As soon as I knew that this call was in, though, I was desperate to get up here.”

He added: “When I spoke to the manager he told me about the plans, the way he sees the club going and how I fitted into the system and team, I thought it was a very attractive proposition.

“I was excited about the project and the direction the club is going in and I just wanted to be part of it.

“I know that Derby have been up and around it over the last few seasons and I’m hoping I can come in and try and help push this club forward and get back to where it wants to be, which is the Premier League. I can’t wait to get started.

“When you see the training facilities and stadium, it’s clear from the off that it is a big club.

“Over the past few years, Derby has been up and around the promotion positions and as an opposition, you know you’re going to have a difficult game.

“It’s always been the case that I have rarely picked up three points here. The club has always played attractive football too, they’re always on the front foot and that’s something I’m glad to be part of.”

Rams manager Frank Lampard fought off competition from Middlesbrough and Sheffield United among others to land Waghorn.

“I’m delighted to see Martyn Waghorn become a Derby County player - I think this is a big signing for us,” he told the Derby official website.

“He has been sought-after all summer and we’ve managed to bring him here, which is fantastic. We sold the club to him and, importantly, he wanted to come here and that’s the sort of player that I want in the squad.

“Martyn has many great qualities and he has been pretty prolific over the last few years in front of goal. He is a real all-round striker and last year we saw not only could he score goals in the Championship but create them as well.”

Waghorn made 39 starts and two sub appearances for the Blues during his single season at Portman Road having signed from Rangers for £250,000 in August last year.

The Ibrox club will receive an initial £475,000 from the South Shields-born frontman's move to Derby via a 10 per cent of profit sell-on clause.

He was directly involved in more Championship goals than anyone else during 2017/18, netting 16 times and recording 11 assists.

Confirmation of Waghorn’s exit will see the Blues formally announce the signings of Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala from Shrewsbury.

Disappointed to see Waggy go but hey ho it has opened the door for us with other signings.

See the opportunity to play under Lampard was a big incentive. Nothing to do with a massive wage increase then.

Also excited as he was to get the deal done I thought he might have had the good grace to say goodbye to the Ipswich fans.

That said, he gave some exciting moments during a sterile last season. Good luck to him.

Well, there are pros & cons. Score goals but poor first touch with terrible passing ability. Lack of pace but an excellent corner & free kick taker. Can be inconsistent at times too. Nah...I don't mind letting him go. All the best Waggy and thank you.

Great last season, silly money for him which has been invested in the squad. No complaints here. Good luck at perennial chokes Derby.

Can't blame Waghorn for taking the higher salary, who wouldn't do the same thing given the chance. Would like to have seen Evans pay him the money to stay and fund Hurst's targets but was never going to happen in the FFP world we work in. Derby on the other hand clearly play by different rules and I personally hope they fail again, Waghorn has a miserable season and Lampard gets sacked.

Best of luck, Waggy. Will miss him though - I voted him my player of the season last season! Such a shame we could not kept him a couple more years as he was a great player for us and seemed a really nice guy.

Well, that's a good bit of business in terms of profit made and not being left with a valuable player whose heart might not have been in it.
Genuinely gutted though as he was one of the established talents we had. Also, with some of the figures being talked about for proven goal scorers at this level, then derby have probably got a good deal there.
Also, seems a bit ironic that lampard who "interviewed " for the town job, has just got one of our best players, probably to spearhead the Rams into prem.
I can just imagine the "interview " went something like "well, Marcus...what's in the war chest?!" and the conversation ended there.
I do like the fact that Town have approached this summer with a long term plan and think Paul Hurst and his new recruits, existing squad should be given time to make a success of things at PR. Just hope we get win soon to settle a few of the doubters' nerves! COYB

My player of the year last year, he cost peanuts, scored and created goals. Very sad to see him go.

Good luck for the season other than the 2 games you play against us. Any chance of catching man flu before those games?

Gutted, getting rid of tried and tested for lets have a guess !
if we perform like we did on saturday then its going to be a tough year for us, if MM had been in charge for that performance then the boo's would have been heard.
Villa in 2 weeks at home could be worse than last season

Waghorn was the reason for hope last year. No point though crying over spilt milk but it is going to take time for all the new acquisitions to gell. There will be games where we are full of vigour and excitement and others when we are under the cosh from very experienced teams. Like I did with MM until he lost the plot, I will back the players and management through the good and not so good times. It's now about a sense of belonging to a club that has rediscovered its roots and understands what Ipswich supporters have been craving for; entertainment, slick passing and movement off the ball.Fingers crossed that Waghorn will not be missed.

Proven goal scorer gone, several future talents bought, maybe I'm reading too much into this, but could be ME/PH are seeing this season as a building block for big push next season?
