Town Have Won Harrison Chase
Monday, 23rd Jul 2018 08:57

TWTD can confirm that Town is the club Bristol Rovers striker Ellis Harrison is set to join for a fee we understand to be £700,000. The move is likely to be finalised as soon as today.

Harrison was left out of the Pirates side for their friendly against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday with manager Darrell Clarke refusing to comment why afterwards.

Clarke subsequently confirmed the 5ft 11in tall frontman would be departing for a Championship club with the Bristol Post speculating that his destination was Portman Road rather than Blackburn Rovers, who had previously been eyeing the Newport-born frontman. TWTD sources have confirmed that that is the case.

The fee includes further top-ups which could ultimately take the sum Rovers receive above £1 million.

The 24-year-old appears set to travel to Portman Road today to complete the formalities relating to the move. He will become Paul Hurst's fourth signing and the second he has paid a fee for after Gwion Edwards, who joined from Peterborough for a similar figure last week, joining free recruit Jordan Roberts and season-long loanee Trevoh Chalobah.

Harrison came through the youth system at the Memorial Stadium and has played all his senior games for the Pirates aside from a short spell on loan at Hartlepool where he made two starts early in 2016.

Last season the Newport-born forward scored 14 goals. In total for Bristol Rovers he has made 116 starts and 88 sub appearances, netting 49 times.

Harrison joining the Blues is likely to increase speculation that Martyn Waghorn could be set to move on, however, it's likely Hurst would have been looking for a new frontman anyway with David McGoldrick having departed in May at the end of his contract.

Over the weekend, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder confirmed that his club - with whom McGoldrick is coincidentally on trial - had made a second bid for Waghorn, understood to be £5 million, while Derby, Middlesbrough and Birmingham have all been eyeing the 28-year-old, who scored 16 goals and recorded 11 assists last season. Nottingham Forest have been linked with the former Rangers, Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan man.

“Harrison Chase”....think he was a character from Doctor Who (Seeds of Doom).

Excited to see how this lad does for the Town, hope he becomes a fan favourite. And hopefully this won't be the last bit of transfer business completed (and in rather than out!) before the week is out either. We've started so we shall finish! ;-)

@RoyalAscotBlue: If you can't understand it, I accept it will be difficult to clarify any further, but the key here is not to infer that anyone suggested we will spend £10m on a replacement for Waghorn. If he is sold for £8m or thereabouts, it is not unreasonable, well to me & some others anyway, to think that we could/spend £2m+ on a replacement, despite not having paid such a fee for wlquite some time.
To reiterate, IF we sell Waghorn, I believe we'll have to replace him with an experienced Championship player rather than an up & comer from a lower league. That will cost more than we've been paying recently.

Will be very happy with this signing, Hurst has known his targets since day one, this is a mcgoldrick replacement but also a player who looks to get in behind and isn't afraid of running at the defence with the ball something which we've lacked for a number of years now. think we need 2-3 center backs maybe a right back as i hope we get rid of spence then. have a lot more faith in Hurst to assemble a good & quality squad than our previous manager.

i think Sears and Garner could be on their way out. Or Garner at least (not sure anybody wants Sears). Waggy and Harrison up front with Folami and Morris getting chances over the season would be great

Great range of goals on that video. Looks like someone who can convert crosses as well as create chances by himself.

Love these people saying in the same sentence that ME won't spend the recently accumulated transfer fees whilst simultaneously commenting on his spending some of it lol.

Judging by that reel, there should be a fair amount of counter-attacking goals in him, if we play that way.

@Bildstoned , I said it because he openly stated this time that the money would be re-invested in the playing squad , his previous history of re-investing in the squad is piss poor , and that Is a simple fact , and currently we are around 3.5 mil up , fee,s alone..so will he spend it or not (as he stated..not me guessing or demanding..once again - HE SAID IT.!!) is a valid point see,ing how he has not previously

Very happy with this, he's at a good age and looks like he can score left foot right foot, long range close in and has an aerial presence as well.
Personally, based on pre season and the fact that Shrewsbury only had one player who scored more than 10 goals in the league last season (Stefan Payne 11 goals), I don't imagine he will bag goals for fun, and if we are to push for Play offs, I think it's vital we keep Waghorn for the chances he creates, goals and not to forget his set piece ability.

I'm happy with this lower league transfer policy, provided that these signings are adding to the existing squad rather than replacing the likes of Waggy.

Unfortunately we did bring in a player of proven championship quality. I think they replaced his head with 'Bluey' on the poster at the station!

Very positive signing and he will be ours.Should work very well with Waghorn if we manage to hold on to him.
Team is now starting to take shape and hopefully with two CB's to come in and the rest of the midfield lads returning from injury things can only get better.

BlueandTrue:
I'm not really sure of your point, but here's 4 more proven championship experience players signed by the club:

Martyn Waghorn
Carlos Edwards
Jason deVos
Marcus Stewart

Yes clubs sign players, some of whom are successes, some of whom are not & for all different reasons. They can come from leagues above, below, foreign or the same league as you are in & there are no absolute guarantees.
What is generally clear is that decent/good sides need a blend of youth & experience ... you RARELY win anything with kids. It is difficult to replace multiple players from your squad/team with all youthful players that are inexperience in playing at this level and expect that it will all gel together & quickly.
Waghorn has that bit of streetsmart experience from playing at a reasonably high level for a number of years; that would be missed, as well as his footballing abilities and would be difficult to replace, were he to be sold.
It often takes some players time to settle into a new club in a different, more demanding league. I don't believe we'll have a huge amount of time for much teething troubles this season, given how competitive the league is.

2 CBS and a CDM would do nicely

My point Len is that signing a player with Champ experience is no more a guarantee of success than signing a player from lower league.

Simple.

My mind boggles at the championship manager logic of some.

BlueandTrue:
I'm a bit long in the tooth for Championship Manager & the like, so I'll leave that kind of analysis to yourself.
Prepare your mind for further boggling; signing proven championship experience players does offer MORE of a guarantee than unproven lower league players; particularly & specifically when introduced into a team lacking in experience. You appear to have abandoned the word "proven" in your latest post for some reason, but that is what we were talking about.
The amount of young talent that fails to make the breakthrough is straggering; whether it is back down to lower or non-league level or out of the professional game altogether.
Of course there will be fantastic exceptions coming through, some of whom will go on to Premier League & international stardom, but getting it right is seriously difficult.
To be clear, I am advocating mega-money wages to the Jimmy Bullards of the world, but certainly the likes of Tom Bradshaw who has scored goals at this level for a relegated Barnsley side (proven championship experience) would be less of a risk that a league 1 or 2 striker who has not faced the same quality of defender week in & week thus far.
