McCarthy Tight-Lipped on Future
Friday, 26th Jan 2018 15:47

Town boss Mick McCarthy is remaining tight-lipped on whether he’ll be staying with the Blues beyond the end of the season, despite hinting that he could move on in the summer during his press conference earlier this afternoon.

Speaking about striker David McGoldrick, who is also out of contract at the end of June, McCarthy said: “Didz might want to leave with me!” before adding, “We could leave hand in hand out of the golden gates here, couldn’t we?”

But quizzed on his situation and whether he had spoken to owner Marcus Evans about the future, with the club having an option to keep him for a further two years, he wouldn’t comment.

“You’ll find out, won’t you, at some stage,” he said. “Other than that, I’m not prepared to say anything else.”

Pressed further, he added: “Unless you don’t understand what I’ve just said, I wouldn’t say anything else.

“[I’m not prepared to talk about that at all at this stage] because it’s not about me, we’ve got Wolves to play tomorrow and it’s a big game for us. If we beat them we’ll be back on the back of the play-offs.

“And that’s important to me, what we do on the pitch. Anything else is kind of irrelevant, I think.

"It might not be to everybody else, and you might all want to know, but sadly and unfortunately you’re not going find out. So, I want to play tomorrow and get on with it and play well. That’s me.”

When it was pointed out that the club’s fans are keen to find out about the plans for the summer, he added: “You [the media] are going to tell them. It’s not me that breaks confidences, it’s the people I tell.”

Does he understand why fans would want to know now? “I think they’ll all be coming tomorrow to see us play well. And that’s what’s important. That’s what’s very important to me.”

He added: “If we win tomorrow, there’ll be a great atmosphere, we’ll all get applauded off and if we don’t, if we get beat, it’ll be completely the opposite and I might be being told where to go anyway by a lot of them.

“That’s just the way it is and I can’t affect that in any other way than getting my team to be well organised play well and hopefully win. And that’s for all our benefit, the players, the club, me, the club in general, the fans.”

If it is so important to you to have fans watching the team then why do you spend so much time slagging them off and driving them away??

MM will stay, but this time ME please give him at least a £1M or £2M to spend on some quality transfers!

They need to announce what is happening with MM prior to the season ticket renewal deadline.

My guess would be he's going to stay. If that's the case I won't be renewing.

Exactly what I would have said in his position. Hopefully, we will know what is to happen around Easter. I do remember the great Bobby Robson regretting telling Newcastle in mid season that he was going. It affected the players. The circumstances may be different here with some desperate for him to leave and others, probably the majority, letting matters take their course. What I do hope is that Evans has hired good football advisers to begin the process of appointing a suitable manager if Evans has already made the decision not to offer a new contract to MM.

He's staying. He's got no offers or imagination. He's his own boss, can set his own targets and gets paid millions for doing nothing.

He's staying.

Mick just likes trolling the fans.

No manager with his head screwed on will say he is going at the end of the season and run the risk of his players stopping playing as well as they can. If he (or anybody) said he was going I can guarantee the players would stop playing for him.

Evans is gambling that somehow we can
nick a playoff spot and then we will all kiss
and make up with McCarthy.

Club desperately needs a change starting with a
new manager -
Roll on May - McCarthy Out

The script is written. We'll find out what's happened after the early bird season ticket deadline has expired.

Rather strange he felt the need to bring the subject up and then refused to anser any questions regarding it!

Arrogant to the end. Makes a throw away, arsey comment about leaving and then refuses to elaborate. He can't handle the fact that most of us want him gone.

If anyone thinks that our club is all of a sudden going to be miles better off without McCarthy then I think you're going to be seriously dissapointed!! Although I admit the football can at times be a bit drab and yes McCarthy can be pig headed and stubborn but on the whole with the budget he's had and the money he's spent I think he's done a pretty decent job!! We are trying to compete with teams spending 2,3,4,5 million pounds on a player and he just hadn't had that opportunity to spend that kind of money which is essential if you're going to get out of the championship!! Yes I understand that the football club loses money every year but the blame lies entirely with Marcus Evans for me!! We pay as fans as much as anyone in the championship and he doesn't invest back into the club for me. Evans is the problem not McCarthy and I believe if Mick was given the budget of other top half championship sides I believe we would be right up there competing at the top of the table and to be fair we aren't too far away from doing that and he's been given next to nothing as a transfer budget!! Give the gaffer some money and a 2 year plan and if it's still not working then that's the time to get shot of him but at the minute he doesn't deserve the stick that he's getting off some fans!! MICK IN!!!! 100% INVESTEMENT NEEDED OR EVANS OUT!!!

When exactly has he 'slagged fans off' or appeared arrogant?

Some very sensitive folks out there.

Perhaps a manager lacking in self confidence who can't stand up for himself would be a preferable choice? Really?

The budget he has had is irrelevant. The batch of players he has are decent enough. It's what he does with them that is bonkers.

Gcon, I have to agree. I have never heard him slag off the fans. However, there are thousands of posts on here calling him every name under the sun. He has pointed out that creating a poisonous atmosphere does not help the players, anyone take offence to that or disagree? And as for arrogant, I don't see it myself. If people on here told me I was always wrong or doing a sh1t job, I would stick up for myself too. I think he has had enough of us as much as many fans have had of him. For the sake of the club, I think it best he goes this year but I will miss his brutal honesty. And for the record, I think he has had us punching above our weight and because of him, we have had the pleasure of seeing Fraser, Lawrence and Celina. And yes, before I get slaughtered, we have also seen some of the worst games witnessed at Portman Road during his tenure plus the low of losing to Lincoln. Still, I hope the new manager does better and just hope the Mick out brigade give whoever it is plenty of time before baying for another sacking.

For someone who has had a long time in the game he just does not get it!

Play well and give it ago and you would still be applauded off the pitch! its the negative, preserve a point attitude with the Dull football that gets the BOO's Not the result!

GO ASAP!

Bart has agreed a new deal and I would think that is because MM is staying at the club, I would think Bart would want to know who the manager is going to be next season before signing a new contract surely?

wayway added 20:48 - Jan 26
Of course he will get another 2 year contract. He has been happy to work with the Evans PLC restrictions for the past 2 years so why change now. He is building up a nice little nest egg before retirement by going along with the PLC wishes, not rocking the boat by asking for money to spend safe in the knowledge that whatever happens he wont be sacked. A win win for him and a lose lose for the fans

Will be heart breaking if MM doesnt go.
