Town Close to Confirming Garner Signing
Sunday, 11th Jun 2017 16:33

TWTD understands Town are close to confirming the signing of Rangers striker Joe Garner.

Reports that the Blues were moving for the 29-year-old in a £500,000 deal first surfaced in Scotland last month and we understand the frontman is due at Portman Road on Monday to complete the formalities of his move, signing a three-year deal.

Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town were also interested, signing a three-year contract.

The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.

While Garner was reportedly not out of Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha’s plans, the Portuguese manager is said to be looking to wheel and deal as he rebuilds his squad during the close season.

Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.

While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.

The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

Correction:
It wasn't that long ago that we always felt we were in with a sniff of the Play Offs, now I fear we're much more likely to be nearer the drop than the top 6.

Nice to make the bloke feel welcome. Wouldn't blame him if he said stick it based on the majority of comments on here.

Bit concerned that his picture reminds me of Norman Wisdom.
Still as some say let give him a chance but really do need to spend some money on quality

Should provide quality cover for Kieffer Moore

Im glad we are actually spending money on signings, but I can't help but feel I would rather have Pitman. I probably will sound deluded but hope he scores 20+ goals!

21 appearances for Rangers and 7 goals so not too bad....

EDP says it's nearer a million than the 500k quoted.

Personally I think we could've spent a million more wisely - paying off McCarthy would've been top of my list.

Very poor signing if true. But if this is an indication of the type and level that MM is targeting then its going to be a long hard season.
In fact I don't think he's better than Sears so unless MM gets a 20+ target man and attacking midfielders we' re not going to score many

OMG, will you listen to the complete tripe that some of you so called fans are posting on here!

This page is full of Alex Ferguson's, will you all stop bleating and try and face some facts. We are at best a championship side and given the fact we have only spent £1.2 million in the last 4 seasons tells you that we are likely to remain at best a championship side. If you don't like either the direction of the club or the way it unfortunately has to do its business now then go and support someone else. As for this signing, the lad took us apart in that FA Cup game back in 2014 and a record of 10 goals in 22 appearances in the top flight of Scottish football is about the same as our current league standard, if not slightly better. If he comes and bags 10 goals in 22 appearances he will certainly match or better our current strike rates.

What happened to getting behind every player who puts on a town shirt, do you not think that they deserve our full backing and support? I really hope for his sake that he hasn't been reading these comments otherwise he will consider staying where he is and who could blame him. I used to think Town fans were great supporters who thick and thin got behind the boys in blue, but if this is a snap shot of what we really have become then I really fear for the long term future of our fan base. Try putting as much effort in creating the right atmosphere at Portman Road on a Saturday like the Newcastle home game back in April, than being a keyboard manager!!!

When I last looked we weren't being linked to Messi or Ronaldo, coffee time sweet cheeks wake up!

Fact is Wooly we need something to spark some excitement and this ain't it. Of course we hope he does well, I want him to score hatfulls of goals but Mark Viduka and Herik Larsson he ain't and after the four season we have had more is needed to wet the appetite.

Accept we are really a small club these days. It's a small town and really expectations should always be tempted a little sue to that..... but still, if young and exciting the plan then this misses a trick.

If Pitts went the other way he'd bang them in

Woolly - bad day at the office fella????. It's not the fact of where we are at, most on here get that and understand it. It's more to do with the way the club is being run, and the style of play on the pitch. It's all about different opinions on here, don't like them, then ignore them, I do...

Some on here don't care who we sign, as long as we sign a player that can steam up glass if asked to breath on it!
If not good enough for top tier Scottish football then certainly won't light up too many Championship stadiums.
The boy is already 29 yrs!!!! Another player, another journeyman!

Truly underwhelming, If we really have a million pound to spend I think we should be looking at a younger striker from either League 1 or 2 who is playing regularly, someone ready for the next step, think most of us agree Adam Webster was a great example, sorry but someone who can't cut it in Scotland is not someone we should be spending our entire transfer kitty on.

He's not a bad player but surely not to take Murphy's place, we still need a Murphy type player replacement. Then again if Garner is Pitman's replacement is he gonna be any better than Pitman!!!

Wooly - absolutely spot on!!! Too many are deluded in thinking in this world we are still a big player, face facts we aren't and haven't been for about 10-15 years. There are at least 10 teams in this league that are receiving parachute payments this summer that is greater than our annual turnover. That's not counting teams with bigger resources than us in things like attendences such as Leeds, Forest, Derby, Wolves, Sheff Wed to name a few. That puts approx 15 teams ahead of us. Like it or not that financially puts us well into the lower half. We can't therefore afford (without living way beyond our means, and we remember how catastrophic it was last time we did that) the so called bigger names in this market and have to therefore be more sensible and hope the manager (whoever it is) can pool a team together that punches above its weight like in 2 of the last 3 seasons and mount a challenge.

Garner good goal scoring record in League 1: not much Championship experience: went to Rangers & lets be honest a poor league when any decent striker would expect to score on a regular basis: change of management didn't help lather part of their season: but when I've seen him he works hard which is something that appeals to Big Mick: would he score more than Pitman I'd say no: does he replace D:Murphy no: but if he signs I look forward to seeing how does: we still need another Central half: a Goal Scoring Midfielder hopefully Huws: a Left winger & another striker: it's still early be nice to see 3/4 decent pernament signings by pre-season & 1/2 good quality season long loan premier league signings before the season starts:
