Town Close to Confirming Garner Signing Sunday, 11th Jun 2017 16:33
TWTD understands Town are close to confirming the signing of Rangers striker Joe Garner.
Reports that the Blues were moving for the 29-year-old in a £500,000 deal first surfaced in Scotland last month and we understand the frontman is due at Portman Road on Monday to complete the formalities of his move, signing a three-year deal.
Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town were also interested, signing a three-year contract.
The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.
While Garner was reportedly not out of Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha’s plans, the Portuguese manager is said to be looking to wheel and deal as he rebuilds his squad during the close season.
Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.
While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.
The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

This time last year we were going into season with Murphy and Pitman now replaced by Moore and Garner !!! Berra replaced by injury prone Taylor Amongst bookies favourites to get relegated can fully see why
FFS if we do sign him give the lad a chance be critical of him in january if need be, until then lets hope IF he does sign he can do the business. That said if he reads these post on here maybe he should think twice about signing!! C**p season is behind us lets at least start the new season positive COYB!!!!!
Slaps forehead with hand...sadly my thoughts are if Rangers (a team well behind Celtic in quality) don't want him and let's face it the majority of the Scottish Premiership is championship standard at best it says it all.
Who cares what Terry butcher says. Tho actually he didn't say leftie, he doesn't rate him. He doesn't think he's the kind of striker we should be signing, as butcher thinks we should be signing a direct replacement for Murphy. Which wouldcmeam is going back to hoofball again. Something none of us want to see. Garner is a good player and excellent at championship level so us the kind of player we should be going for. Ok, it hasn't worked out for him at Rangers. That's how it goes sometimes. We've had great players here in the past who've moved on and they've not performed at their new club. Alan Brazil was a perfect example. Brilliant here, went to Man utd, and tottenham and failed to live up to expectations. Instead of slating the guy before he's even kicked a ball, why don't u so called fans get behind the guy, and give him a chance. Besides, even if he doesn't score as many goals as we need him to I doubt it will all be down to him, unless we sign the players required to set him up. If we do, and he fails then criticising him may well be valid. But very unfair right now.
As others have said he is a real hot head. Dirty, nasty player to go with it. Remember him catching Berra with a flailing elbow at Portman Road. Also likes a whinge at the ref.
Pretty good in the air for 5 ft 10 though and works hard
Preparing for League One already... Marcus Evans you are one fecking clever business man I gives you that you feckless faceless non-footballing maestro...
I'd rather see us spend our precious £500k on someone a bit younger - we should be looking at players in their early to mid twenties with sell on value.
Good/Not good, doesn't matter. With Mick still here we know it's hoofball, negativeity of safty first and every point is a prisoner, it's going to be a long painful season.
We need half a dozen exciting players who have the skill, ability and stamina to play attacking football. Joe Garner would be the 6th player to sign once we have strengthened the squad with 5 young players to provide the tempo and the ammunition. If Ipswich do not play attacking football then it is back to the "McCarthy Out" syndrome. With a few useless players from last season still lingering at the club I can,t see much change, especially if they are in the starting 11.
For those saying butcher doesn't rate him with the greatest amount of respect to butch he hasn't really set the world alight in his managerial career, Lets give the lad a chance edited burying him as a flop.
It doesn't matter if you have Messi up front if the midfield are going to spend the whole game passing sideways and backwards and thinking they are additional centre backs !!!
3 yr deal? wow, they must be pretty certain about this signing.
A step in the right direction, but not a target man. So, we still need a replacement for Murphy to play alongside him (and that's not Moore or Samuel).
Pointless having a go at the player until we see him play. People annihilated Spence prior to him signing in Jan, and he's been very good. People also raved about Moore prior to him signing, and I've seen nothing to indicate that he's any good since he joined the club. Going a few years back, Cameron Stewart? Loads of people were really happy about him signing, and he turned out to be a dud. Occasionally the board gets it right (Coke), but most of the time we get it well wrong. Let's give him a chance to play a few games before judgement?
Come on everyone is this really that bad? If he signs why can't he do a good job - he can do play at this level & might just have a point to prove. He wouldn't be the first to be poor at a club and then get their career restarted elsewhere. I am very much in the MM out brigade. I haven't renewed my season ticket for 2nd year running. Just think we have to be realistic & spending £500k on someone like this might be a start. One thing for sure the negativity shown to a player who might not even sign for us can't be right.
Have also heard from a Rangers fan that actually when he was played as a striker he scored goals for them. But spent most of his time there being used as a winger, and was wasted there. A bit like what happened with Sears here. So hopefully, get him back playing in his correct position and get a couple of decent midfielders in to give him the service, we' ll see the best of him. Pjewell, really hope we don't go for a big target man as all that will happen then, is we'll go back to hoofing the ball again.
cant understand why he is being offered a 3 yr contract,[unless we go down to L 1]At 29 ,its hardly taking him into his prime, and that is what we need to progress .But at that price its top draw for Evans, who has no genuine desire to get beyond mid table in championship .I will be judging his performances via Radio Suffolk,....if I can be bothered .
So we put in a bid for a player for 1 million supposedly (Watkins) so rather than up the bid we set our sights lower and get somebody for around half the amount! Zero ambition as per usual! I do agree however we have to give the player a chance, he might prove a surprise package. Spending more cash doesn't always guarantee a better signing but I'd rather we were shopping for a plus 1 million striker rather than looking for another bargain! It's the difference between backing a 10/1 outsider horse or an even money favourite. One has around a 50% chance of coming up trumps, the other has less than a 10% chance. Surely after all the players we've sold we could stump up the cash for just 1 decent proven striker! Evans has little interest left in our club, each year he invests less and less and so we continue to slip further down the Championship pecking order. It was that long ago that we always felt we were in with a sniff of the Play Offs, now I fear we're much more likely to be nearer the drop than the top 6.
