McCarthy Hopes Varney Does Enough to Win Longer Stay
Thursday, 15th Sep 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes striker Luke Varney can continue to make the sort of impact he made at Derby on Tuesday night and win himself a longer deal with the Blues. Varney, 33, who scored the winning goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory at the iPro Stadium, rejoined Town for a third spell on a short-term deal last month.

“He’s contracted until January 20-something,” McCarthy said. “Didzy got injured, I knew Reg hadn’t gone anywhere, I think Burton were sniffing, Port Vale were talking to him, so I went in for him.

“I knew I could trust him, I knew he’d be fitting in, I wasn’t worried about any of that and I knew he would give us something.

“So we took him on a short-term contract and if he’s doing great, we’ll want to sign him and if he wants to stay, he can.

“If he’s ripping it up and somebody else wants to sign him then he’d got options. And I’m delighted for him.

“I hope he’s got those options and we’re wanting to keep him because he’s such a great guy around the place.”

Yes didzy got injured but is he a like for like player in any way other than he plays in or around the same area of the pitch.

However, it's because he's different he might be worth another six months. He works hard and if he chips in with a goal or two and assists then I'm sure he's worth the small contract he's on for another six months

Wickets the story is about keeping him, is it not?

I can't see him scoring many goals but he is a good sub and let's face it, we are short on strikers. We can't be sure Didzy will ever be 100% or whether we can get a 'good' striker to replace Murphy in the January window.

I was excited to see Grant and Lawrence on Tuesday evening and they both looked good. With Ward too I am pleased with who Mick has signed. Varney will only ever be cover and I doubt he is being paid much.

I just hope Dozzell gets a chance and is not forgotten. A loan spell for him might be on the cards.

Would rather our young players get game time ahead of old short term deals . Dozzell came in at the end of last season scored we won games and now he is nowhere ?

Yeah, he won the game at Derby, but he wouldn't have if it was any other keeper who faced the shot!
Annoys me how a player like Varney is coming on in place of the youngsters we have, that look so promising!

Agreed he isnt a world beater. but he did score the winner in a game we really needed to win with a half decent turn and run through the middle, so let scut him a bit of slack shall we!! Well done Reg keep it up son.

To its quite simple, on a limited budget Mick is trying to build a younger team as the hoped for signings didnt work out, he was forced into Varney who he knows will do a job for him. Guess the same will happen in January, if Mick signs his targets he will not sign Luke, if he doesnt sign his targets Luke is there as a standby. I believe its called management!

Poor keeping for the goal but at least he was prepared to have a shot unlike Skuse or Douglas.

Wasn't content with his re-signing but to be fair, in the last 33 games he has scored more than Sears so is a definite option.

Definitely worth having around even if it's just to come on a bully the oppositions back four, I am yet to see him miss out on a header and if he's chipping in with a couple of goals why not? Excellent back up on the bench or if injuries occur, and of the promising youngsters ready to compete for first team places there aren't strikers really so Verney isn't stopping growth of players surely??

And the youngster who can come on and do his job is................................?

That is why he is useful to us.

A hopeful shot at goal which Carson more or less fluffed and that should do it extension to contract til' the end of the season...I wonder who makes breakast between him or MM or do they take it in turns? McCarthy loves him to bits, shame MM doesn't follow the route of the youngsters coming through (as he did at the end of season when there was nothing on the games).

TimmyH brining the youngsters in at the end of the season was, in my cynical opinion, to convince some that he was preparing to use the youngsters in positions they were suited to. But why would he replace our over fantastic right back with a natural in that position. Once he signed right footed Webster, we knew Chambers would be at right back this season MM will not drop him.

Varney is a low cost, low quality option. He scored a goal - but the keeper helped. If he scores another 9 or so goals prior to January then fair enough. But whatever happens Evans must be held to account. There was a promise to spend out on a striker to replace Murphy in January. We must do so. Varney not good enough

Dozzel came in because the season was over. Now there is something to play for again it's back to 'mustn't lose' mick's favourites and dependables (laughable) only.

7th in league. Didz , Best and williams to come into the team. You might have thought the mood on here would be fairly upbeat...... but then again !

Leon Best must have woken up on Wednesday morning thinking how on earth did I get behind Luke Varney in the pecking order?

BlueNomad added 14:20 - Sep 15
Muccletonjoe - please stop making logical points! It flies in the face of the "experts" on here.

TimmyH added 16:44 - Sep 15
logical - ha! ...we're actually 9th at the moment, as for the fore mentioned players - Best a journeyman, Didz always injured with Williams the only player with quality currently (injury permitting). I'll look forwards to the return of the wee Welshman but I won't be holding my breath with the others.

Team morale is important, and Reg is good to have around

Cant disagree with anything Mick has said above;but as JAS says, shouldn't stop him looking for striker in next window;but Leon Best hopefully will have been given a kick by then!

January is a long way off so time to consde all the options;but after losing out in last window both Mick and Evans dummy have seemed pretty certain that club will be looking again in Jan
