McCarthy: Varney Not the Last Signing
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 16:05

Town boss Mick McCarthy is confident of adding further to his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, having re-signed Luke Varney on a short-term deal until January earlier today.

“It’s great to have Reg back,” McCarthy told the club site regarding Varney, who is back at Portman Road for a third spell having been on a short-term deal last season after a spell on loan from Blackburn during the previous campaign.

“He was a free agent at the end of last season so he could do what he wanted but I had reservations about not sorting something out then.

“He’s a good player and has been a good servant to us. He’s a great personality. We all love him, the staff, the players.

“With Didz injured, we had to try and get someone in before the weekend. That was never going to be easy but I knew Reg would be fit and could do a job for us.

“There were clubs interested in him but I rang him yesterday and it was all sorted in no time.”

McCarthy says he has continued to speak to Premier League clubs about more signings, presumably loans, although at yesterday’s press conference he wasn’t ruling out further permanent additions.

“We are still looking to add to the squad further before the window closes. I’ve had discussions with some Premier League clubs and they are saying ‘We are trying to get someone in. This might happen, that might happen - if it does, we might be able to do something’.

“So it’s a case of being patient at the moment but I’m confident that we will add to the squad before the end of August.”

If we want a striker we should go for Jason Cummings from Hibs young and absolute goal machine. Still think it's obvious we need a solid RB clearly Emmanuel isn't going to get a chance. + A winger because if Ward/Grant pick up a knock its back to Sears or Bishop and neither look comfortable out wide. Playing out of position looks to have ruined Sears tbh, hope I'm wrong and he can get a string of games up top and rekindle his form.

Thank goodness we need two or three new additions. Mick is fooling no one, Varney was deemed surplus to requirements and now we are expected to believe he is the answer. Squad already rocking after a couple of injuries. Shows it lacks depth.

Yawn.....same old portman road Cr@p.

The only season we've got Varney back is because MM has failed to land another Striker in the Transfer market.

McGoldrick is now unfortunately another Luke Hyam...a Sicknote.

Kyle lafferty. .......he's 7 foot and he plays the flute kyle lafferty. ...great and white army

Ok so he's playing for Naarich but for a player who pleyed zero premiership games to play all NI qualifiers and score 7 he's worth a punt.

He also suits Mc Carthy's style. He can receive a long ball, hold it and has a scoring boot.

His big deal back is discipline, tad poor

Wonder if the match winner Ben Kennedy caught Mick's eye in the Stevenage game? Only 19 and has been linked with Premier League clubs.

Well nothing like making progress. Dreadful signing and a good reflection of the lack of scouting, imagination or ambition that blights us with the present regime.

Laffety? That's must be a joke he's been hammered out of every club he's played for, at Palmero he regularly went AWOL up to Milan to $h@g his Mistress and is recent betting activities probably won't set the best example, especially given our own issues with that last season.

A jolly good jape that, Lafferty. Lol

What is this club doing? Reg was surplus to requirement and not offered a contract! If mick thought he could do a job he would have signed him already! Great character and gives his all which is v refreshing in the modern day footballer but this stinks! A panic signing after the 2 injuries this week! Mcgoldrick is made of glass and we should have known this and a new striker should have been on thee agenda.. However he now has no option but to play Murphy and Sears! This combination where v successful in the playoff campaign and I hope Freddie now gets a run of games in his preferred position! He's so low on confidence and needs a goal! Let him play how he did when he arrived from col u.. Freedom and linking up with Murphy was his strength! I am not a negative poster but losing to Stevenage and now the mcgoldrick injury (a game where he really didn't need to be involved in given micks value on cup competions) he's now missing till late November at least.. Late December until he becomes fully fit again and then we wait for the next injury! Let's hope for a positive result 2morro but our transfer activity over the last 3-4 years has been nothing other than pathetic! COYB

Maybe we could enquire about bringing in Middlesboro's David Nugent
at least he would score some goals at Portman Road

Shows how forward thinking we have become, doesn't it? I find it difficult to muster much enthusiasm for the way McCarthy is running the club and this loan signing shows the poverty of his management.
Should have kept Marriott rather than let him go but then again McCarthy prefers to stockpile midfielders and defenders rather than attackers who can actually win games with goals.
Next signing swill be Jimmy Leadbitter assisted by Super Ray Crawford..on loan of course..
