Mings Signs New Deal
Saturday, 20th Sep 2014 14:28

Left-back Tyrone Mings has signed a new contract until June 2017. The 21-year-old was offered the new terms after the Blues turned down Crystal Palace's £3 million deadline day offer.

“We’ve been delighted with the progress Ty has made and his contract is reward for getting in the team and doing well,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“Palace did make a big offer for him but we want him here long term. I want to keep our young, exciting players and Ty is one of them.”

Mings, whose previous contract ran until the summer of 2015 plus an option for a further year, joined the Blues from non-league Chippenham for £10,000 in December 2012 and has now made 13 starts and 13 sub appearances.

I saw a lot of Mick Mills who happens to my favourite ever Town player. Different type of player to Mings but I also feel this lad has the potential to reach the top. He has the ideal mentor in Mick McCarthy

Moscow Blue. Beattie's best position was central defender, however yes he did fill in a left fullback. Beattie could have played anywhere in his heyday, he was unplayable and a class above the rest, shame injuries brought his career to an early end. Mick Mills did play left back as well as right back and was a neat tidy player but I personally would not say his forward runs and attacking play had much pace, but he was a trustworthy defender. I still reckon Mings if he continues to improve as he is will be the best left back ITFC have had, including Cresswell.

He's the most exciting player we've had on our books for a long long time. And he scared the sh#t out of me the first couple of games! Am I jumping the gun a bit to say that MM has been absolutely superb in every aspect of this boy's development so far? Hats off to them both! Trying not to get too excited, but god it's a bit exciting!

Great news.

Ty has the potential to (almost) become another Kevin Beattie although in
my eyes nobody can be quite that good again.
He has a lot going for him with his power and enthusiasm and the perfect
Manager for him in MM.
Well done to all in first turning down the Palace offer and then getting Ty
signed on extended contract.

Great news...tying down our best players on long deals is far better than the constant chopping & changing that some clubs go through.

Leaving Taylor out of the picture as he is good as gone now, Tyrone Mings is our ( i think) most expensive signing if fact he is the sole cash buy making our total squad outlay £10,000 how many other Championship sides can boast that with the quality we have got.
Great he has signed up he has so much talent and a pleasure to watch he is up there with the best we have had over the 50 years i have been a supporting the Town.

Cloddyseedbed Well don't damn Mick Mills with faint praise aye? A neat and tidy player - this man holds a club record of over 700 appearances, captained us to FA cup and Eufa Cup wins and captained England in the World CUp. Mings may well be a very exciting talent and go on to great things but do get a sense of proportion.

Fatcatevans. I know what Mick Mills was and what he achieved in the game. Good player, nice bloke, I've met him and was privileged to do so but I believe Mings will be a more exciting player in that position. Not degrading Mick Mills in any way - just my opinion! :)

I am very excited about Tyrone Mings as I posted above but as Fatcatevans says,
Mick Mills was something special. He could play either right or left back and was
as good as any fullback England have had since.
For those of us lucky enough to have seen Ipswich Town teams from the late 1950's
onwards there are a host of great players to recall but possibly in Bishop and Mings
we now have two more that might join them in being remembered that way.
In Mick McCarthy I think we also have a Manager who will handle them in the right
way to give them the best chance of reaching their potential.

As I said last week Ty Mings is the most exciting young player I have seen in a long long time, handled/managed correctly he will be a massive asset to ITFC and England. Excellent bit of business, and good to see the decision makers having the foresight and courage (at last) to get these young and promising talents signed up on decent contracts.

PJH ............ how you can compare Mings with Beattie is amazing - two totally different type of players.

Only comparison anyone can make is that they are / were Defenders.

Good Evening blueboy1981.

The most obvious comparison between Mings and Beattie to me is their power in going forward.I would class Beattie as more than a defender,I would say he was a complete footballer because there was nothing that he could not do.At the moment Mings is better at going forward than he is at defending but if he continues to develop he could become something very special.Beattie was something very special.

Although mills could play either flank. I think he was predominantly a right back. But its hard to compare eras. Defo nothing like Neil 'sumo' Thompson though, ah that sweet left foot and utter lack of pace. Has he gone back to selling nappies? I detract in terms of stature he is much more like Herman when he played there for us and I think Ming's has a little more potential than him just got to hope he keeps progressing and that means mm backing him and giving him confidence like he is.

I like what Mick is doing at the club. People have been crying out and stamping there feet earlier in the season for Mick to spend £2m+ of the creswell money on 1 player but using it to tie down/consolidate the existing core of quality we have is much better imho. Building towards top 6.......and sooner than rather than later.

Brassy only saw highlights on motd but at one stage he delivered a slide ruke pass to the front. Let the clauses kick in!

Mick Mills was a brilliant captain, but as someone who watched him week in and week out, believe me the crowd held their breath when he was on the ball for all the wrong reasons
He definitely had a mistake in him - but he was a brilliant captain of 3 of our best ever sides
That is history that cannot be re-written!
