Stewart to Miss First Six Weeks of the Season
Monday, 4th Aug 2014 20:06

Recent signing Cameron Stewart is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after fracturing his jaw during Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw at Leyton Orient.

“Cameron was caught by an arm late on in the game on Saturday and the scan has shown that he has fractured his jaw,” Blues physio Matt Byard told the club site.

“He will have surgery in the morning and we will see where we stand from there but for that type of injury, you are looking at between four to six weeks on the sidelines.”

Stewart joined the Blues on a free transfer in July having been released by Hull City after a proposed switch to his former loan side Leeds broke down.

In addition to Stewart, fellow winger Stephen Hunt was absent for all Town’s pre-season games with a calf injury and will also miss Saturday’s season opener at home to Fulham (Sky Sports 1/HD1, KO 5.15pm).

Tommy Smith and Paul Anderson were left out of the team at Brisbane Road due to groin and hamstring injuries respectively but on Saturday manager Mick McCarthy said he expected them to be OK for the Cottagers’ visit, while Jonny Parr suffered a groin problem against the O’s.

Meanwhile, former Blue Scott Barron has been forced to hang up his boots at the age of 28 due to a hip problem.

The left-back or midfielder came through the academy at Playford Road and broke into the Town first team under Joe Royle, making 16 starts and one sub appearance before moving on to Millwall in 2007. He was most recently with Brentford.

Sign Garvin! Get Frimpong in! Both free transfers
Bit of depth in midfield + competition for Skuse and Hyam.
Another striker and winger or loan...

Easy! - might give Mick a call...

Mick has plenty of defending cover for an attacking minded player thats our problem. When we get an injury to anybody we have to patch up our team, its going to be a struggle IMO.....

I don't wish to pi$$ on anyone's strawberries, but, don't you think that MM (the manager!) knows all this, knows his squad, knows their capabilities, and more to the point "knows what he's doing". That's why he's manager of ITFC & I'm a brain surgeon at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital (haven't had a patient for 10 years now!).
He manages-we watch-simples!

We have cover in all positions, it will all be ok. "We need three or four more" !! Don't be a spaz!

If you keep signing players who have not played full seasons for many years or spent most of last year injured they may be prone to injuries !! Dids , Hunt , Parr, Stewart ,SEB, its not rocket science .
Add to that upsetting/getting rid of players who have been injured before replacing them Henshall/Taylor and we are looking thin on the ground , but lets wait till we are 5 or 6 games in and have been really plucky against teams till we do anything about it .
I fancy we will start the season with 4 centre backs playing at the back and three defensive midfielders starting out of four and two big lumps up front .
terrific Tabby and fantastic Frank will see us ok , Fulham must be quaking

Mick was always likely to put out a solid team defensive minded team v Fulham with maybe Henshall brought on later in the game. Very unlikely he and Stewart woild have been fielded at the same time anyway. Still, hard to see Deanmertons team getting more than a point.

Calm down everyone, Mick was always going to field a defensive minded team v Fulham anyway with maybe Henshall coming on later on for Tabb. Hard to see us getting more than one point at most if Deanmertons suggested team plays though. But a draw would be decent against one of the stringest squads in the division

Excuses coming thick and fast already.

There has been little evidence so far that Stewart was going to play a lot anyway, he's not a defender after all, so I can't see that his absence weakens things that much.

Don't worry, as long as we don't concede a goal we'll be fine. At least a point every game!

goleszowski: The players Mick has got in are good quality! Even better he didnt pay nothing for them except the keeper which was £50k so stop bloody moaning and get behind the team! the season hasnt even started and your moaning already! What a fickle fan!

I must admit that with McGoldrick injured our creativity levels don't exactly leave me salivating. However, let's not be all doom and gloom about this. MM has already stated his intention to add some PL loans and now that nearly all of the PL's clubs world cup players are back in training, loans will become available. I wouldn't be surprised to see some movement in the next week or so. Equally, some players may wait to see whether they play the 1st couple of PL games or whether they're in their manager's plans before deciding whether to go out on loan at the end of the transfer window. If we want the right players, we may have to be patient but for the quality of player that may come available, it may well be worth it!

@1RWR - yes but he's trying to keep ME happy as well, keeping wages, signing on fees etc down to a minimum, he's not only our manager but also becoming our accountant. That's why Mick and Marcus get on so well together. You watch if we get injuries expect even more players playing out of position, the squad is that small!

Anybody ever query what salary Mick is on? after all he did say in the summer he gets 'paid well' - perhaps some of his salary/1M bonus could have gone on signing a player!

Until Dids is fit, DenanMurton's 11 looks spot on to me as MM's first choice except probably Hyam for Wordsworth. He's nothing if not predictable. Highly unlikely that Stewart would have had a sniff in the early games anyway. Hard to beat if Chambers plays out of his skin as well as his position, but little to offer going forward. A re-run of last season looks the best we can realistically hope for, but would dearly love to be proved wrong.

if we're going with a cheapskate mid table league1 type squad at least charge the corresponding ticket prices. why are tickets the most expensive in the league when we a playing free trialists?

Hunt is looking a good investment. How long till we pay him off?

Put some support on it and play on, man up a bit!

As the injury occurred one week before the season started and "you are looking at between four to six weeks on the sidelines", he might only miss the first three weeks of the season rather than the six mentioned in the headline.

First of many key injuries no doubt. I'm sure as a club we suffer more injured players than anyone else

At least its not a serious or threatening injury to his general fitness or footballing ability.
Its an unlucky one and he will be back before you know it!

In the mean time Henshall, Tabb and Anderson will have first crack at nailing down first team spots. Hopefully it will be motivation to these guys to make sure they stake their claim!

I was impressed with our final position last season and I didn't expect us to finish there and I really believed that with a couple of signings to give us a bit more creativity and some extra goals that we really would be a good side this season but the reality is on Saturday we are going to be fielding the exact same side with the same tactics apart we now don't have Cresswell or Williams! Very disappointing....

Real shame Stewart is missing the first few weeks but as others have said it gives other a chance to impress. Think we can predict Saturday's starting line up maybe except for one or two players. Mick will get in a couple of loan signings nearer the season once premier league clubs have names their squads, I think part of the Cresswell money will be going towards getting some quality in. All managers make a few mistakes along the way but generally Mick has done a great job so far. Let's hope we can keep progressing and let's do our bit by getting behind the team this Saturday. Tough one to start with but got to play everyone.
