Town Face Shelbourne in Pre-Season
Friday, 17th May 2013 15:09

Town will face Dublin side Shelbourne at their Tolka Park home in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 6th July (KO 5pm).

Boss Mick McCarthy plans to take the squad to Ireland for a week’s training at Carton House in Kildare with the game following at the weekend. The former Ireland manager and skipper is only looking to play one friendly during the trip.

Shelbourne are currently 12th in the Airtricity League Premier Division, Ireland’s top flight. Tolka Park has a capacity of 9,680.

The Shelbourne match will be the first of pre-season with the only other game confirmed so far the fixture at Colchester on Tuesday 23rd July.

The proposed game at St Mirren has now been scrapped, while the Blues owe Evo-Stik League side Chippenham Town a friendly a part of the deal which saw Tyrone Mings move to Portman Road in December.

They might as well play a couple of games in the week they spend in Ireland, surely?

Real Madrid have come to Carton House before - and the Irish rugby team are regulars there.

Saw us at Tolka Park in GB's last Summer in charge (we played Bray and a league of Ireland selection during that preseason).

One memory I have of that visit to Ireland is of a few young local kids pointing out Titus Bramble and saying he was our new signing, Finidi George. Seems like such a long time ago!

Will be at Tolka Park on 6 July and look forward to that! Hope all who can make it very much enjoy their visit and the game.

Jimmys Law - that's quite early in pre season so my guess is they'll use the week as a fitness and team bonding camp then have the one game as an incentive for those who train well.

Jimmys and Bontcho - League of Ireland season is in full swing when we arrive, so it might not be as easy arrange games.

Puzzled? I thought we were trying to avoid long hauls all around the place for pre-season which is why each year we play local teams, and all that way for one friendly. Don't get me wrong, its good to have some travels from a fans and challenge point of view but thought there was a good reason Mick liked staying local.

I'm sure he knows what he's doing though.

Cheers Bontcho and omuircheartaigh. That makes more sense. I didn't realise the Irish teams would be playing league football then.

Will be there. I see wolves have released Ebanks Blake & Hunt. Blake can score.

Judging by their 3-0 drubbing at home by St Pats Athletic last night, a visit by ITFC might be the kick up the butt they need!

That game at Tolka Park under GB was versus a team that doesn't exist anymore called Dublin City FC. Think it finished 5 or 6 nil. Can't believe it's on the 6th July though. I'm down take part in the Ring of Kerry cycle (112 miles!!) that same day - been training months for it :-(
Still, do hope to get around to Carton House to watch training.
