McCarthy: Point Gained
Saturday, 24th Nov 2012 18:03

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt that ultimately the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Peterborough was a point gained rather than one lost with Posh having gone in front in the first half.

McCarthy said it could be seen as either points dropped or one gained: “You can see it both ways I guess. It’s a point won.

“I haven’t seen the goal we conceded yet to pick the bones out of it but it looked like another soft and milky goal.

“People just score against us too easily, but I won’t know the reasons why until I see it. We didn’t play well in the first half, we couldn’t pass it to our team-mates.

“But it was coming, the performance, towards the end of the first half we were getting better and thankfully we improved in the second half with a bit more intensity and I think we deserved the point certainly, that’s for sure.”

The Blues manager thought there was no argument with Mark Halsey’s decision to award the spotkick: “I thought it was a penalty, I thought it was a stonewall penalty, to be honest.

“He got him stood up and as he’s gone past him he’s clipped his foot. He may have gone down slowly but it was a penalty.”

He had no issue with the crowd’s reaction to the first half display: “I understand that they deserved to boo us off. We were pretty poor in the first half, I’ve no problem with that at all.

“In the second half I thought there was a response from everybody, from the players and from the crowd. We were getting better, we were starting to look better and goals, penalties, make everyone feel better.

“There were chances at both ends, the game became really stretched,” he added. “We were trying to win it and we were in danger losing it in trying to win it.

“Their keeper made a good save, Hendo made a good save from the shot. They broke on us a couple of times. DJ Campbell clips it with his studs and if he gets a bit more on it he scores. It wasn’t great, it was exciting.”

McCarthy says Nigel Reo-Coker is definitely out of the Nottingham Forest match: “He’s hurt his hamstring so there’s no chance of him playing on Tuesday. He might be out for two or three weeks.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said his side would have won if they scored a second goal: “I am disappointed that we didn’t get the three points. I think it was a lost opportunity.

“We just needed that second goal. That was our biggest frustration. If we get the second goal, I think we win the game.”

He had no argument with the penalty: “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t seen it again. Lee Tomlin doesn’t think it was, he felt it was soft, but one of my coaches sits in the stand and he thought it was a penalty. He’s given it, so it is.”

Ok team not that great at the moment but some other sides are doing worse - we are creeping towards that 4th bottom spot!

Teams are certainly not frightened of playing us at Portman Road anymore.
This is easily the worst Ipswich Town I can ever remember and "Big Mick" has a really big job on his hands.
Orr was ok but being ok made him easily our best defender. He did cover an awful lot for the others. Lee Martin also put in a good shift. Henderson did a good job in goal. DJ Campbell did a lot of running up front and when he got time on the ball he was a threat. Edwards showed the odd bit of quality here and there and was up for the battle. So 5 players played well and can hold their heads up after the game.
The rest of the team really was a joke, with outstanding joke awards going to Higginbotham (he seems to be getting worse and worse every game) and Reo Coker (how did this guy get a 3 month contract?). Its hard to play well when you have such clear weaknesses in the team.
Lets all hope we end up 4th from bottom at the end of the season and Mick can sort out PERMANENTLY our central defensive situation.
We were deservedly boo'ed off at half-time but the old "You're not fit to wear your shirts" was a shame. Martin, Henderson and Campbell had all had solid first halves.
Think we really missed Wellens in the midfield role.

Lee Tomiln looked sensational btw.
Shame he's not an ITFC player!
Forgot to mention Smith. Think he should be no more than "number 4" at the back (i.e. back up to a back up). His confidence looks shot to pieces and he looks as if he's on an ice rink most of the time (not a football pitch). His performance was once again atrocious and at the end he nearly gifted Posh the winning goal.
Easily the worst ITFC team I have ever seen. I am glad nobody has gone to the effort of looking at all of our gaffs and goals conceded and posted it on youtube.
In Mick we must trust

I find it really interesting how many talk of needing a 'new team' in January and 'getting rid of dead wood' etc... In actual fact, in terms of pedigree and ability we have all we need.

Q: All those who say 'In Mick We Trust'- why? What has he done to make you think this? Reality: we are as bad under him as under Jewell...

You can slag players off all you like, but look at who's departed under recent managers, slagged off on here and how well they've done! Obvious examples being Trotter (first team and key player at Millwall), Delaney (first choice centre half in a tasty Palace side), etc.

We need a proper manager who can gel and motivate the quality we have. It's not rocket science!!!!!

PS I know I'll get loads of minuses- bring it on. I remember being the only one on here to say that a certain Mr Bullard was a waste of space when everyone else was calling him our 'saviour' lol.

Walk the walk you are entitled to your opinion mate.
Speaking for myself I say in mick we trust cos .
The guy has came in and started to make a difference and has started the slow job of getting us out of the brown stuff .
I feel your comments are a bit premature ..
Lets get behind our new manager and pull in the same direction instead of running the man down .

The way forward for clubs in our position really does seem to be to pick up younger talent from the lower regions rather than go for aged PL rejects: witness some of 'Boro's finds yesterday. Boro had just kicked out half their first team, but they still managed to come and more than match us at PR (evidently). I'm not sure what MM's record is on scouting talent from the lower leagues, but I hope we go back to this policy as soon as we can - that and bringing through the youngsters. However, I understand that for the moment desperate measures are in order. Anyone and anything that can plug the gaps will do. Building comes later.

For the second week in a row Higgibum gifts them a goal early doors, whats that about? Would be nice to see the whole team come over to the vocal support area (Sir Bobby stand) and show that we are "all in it together" at the end of the match, not just trudge off. Hyam and Dury midfield anyone so we have some energy in that department. N'daw holding and Carlos wide right.

Wickets Higham yes but I just don't think Drury good enough. Martin does at least run at defenders trouble is his end product is shocking I suspect mick has plans to bring in a proper left wide man in. We miss a Norris types player someone who will score from midfield. When did one of our midfielders last score? Or defenders for that matter, that's why when we go one down it's such an uphill battle we can't leave it to the strikers all the time! We missed murphys height and hold up play yesterday but he isn't a prolific goal scorer! I'm hoping barnet is a faster more effective Murphy type character who has got goals in him

I was actually pleased with the point. When I saw Martin was in the team again I feared we would lose. Top marks to him for falling over that guys foot, best bit of play from him all season. Glad he was not taking the penalty though cos I'm sure he would not have scored.

Did we let Luongo go back too soon!?

Hyam, Drury, N'Daw and Moshni fit for Forest - if there's not a good combination between them 4 to get us oin a little run we're in big trouble i'm afraid as we can't wait for new reinforcements in Jan, we have to be in touching distance still at worst!

Terrible game, at least we got a point. Really worried with Forest game coming up on Tues though - we had better watch out for Billy Sharp! I wish MM would have the bottle to start Hyam, Loach and Moshi - can't be any worse than what played on Sat. Respect to Moshi - he was signing autographs and having his photo taken with fans before the match. He deserves a start to show us what he's about. There's something about him that I really like.

The current crop of players are not good enough, how do i quantify that Table position and stats. I can understand young up and coming players being loaned out to get experience, but older players are another teams cast off period. Reo coker didnt even have a club. We are now well into a cycle of panic buys, loans and then sack the manager all a recipie for disaster. Mick will need time to build a team at the right pace.
Yesterday proved we will be lucky to stay in this division. To read comments on here trying to put a positive spin on the team is comic at best and mostly sad. ITFC for most of its history has been a team who competed for ie old Div 1 title, europe and when relegated there or thereabouts for playoffs. Now we seem to be shooting practice for other teams. I dont blame Mick its way too early days but im not convinced by any of his signings so far. I expect he has a tight budget to work with so he will have to use all his experience and contacts to root out the right players i wish him the best of luck for that. One further observation Evans seem to have no problem investing large amounts of cash in his managers salary to get the man he wants but then the said manager seems to miss out on quality players due to financial retraints. Im hoping that the current crop guided by Mick can turn it around and stay up the last thing i want is to go down to the third tier but i am under no illusions that we are to good to go down. The players we have at the moment would struggle in Div 2 let alone 1.

Thank the good lord that Reo-Coker pulled his hamstring! At the age of 28 he should be in his prime, box to box with bags of energy, unfortunately for us we have signed another burnt out player who is well past his best. His nickname should be 'The crab'.

With him & N,daw in the middle we have absolute no creativity. We need two centre mids in the Holland and Magilton mould. One who can tackle & get a few goals whilst going box to box with a superb engine. The other who can also tackle, switch play, create an opening with a through ball & ping some 'Hollywood' passes around. The two we have are just battlers, we no pace, passing ability or goals on them. In fact (although I like Martin & Edwards) none of our midfield have goals in them. Bring back Norris.

Mick if you are listening, Beckham will be available from Jan, also.

Best news to come out of this is that Reo-Coker is not available for a few weeks. Piss poor and a bad egg.

well i agree with a lot on here, n daw should be spelt n dour and reo coker is a joke, infact most of our loan players are way below the quality with have in the wings waiting to play and they are not even that great but atleast oours.

this loan system has got way out of control and needs sorting asap, wasnt to long ago we had a half decent team but just not quiet good enough but was made a lot better with loanees like townsend and de santos, eg quality players which are not quiet good enough for first team prem clubs but outshines in the championship, but what do we have now, loanees who are loanees for a reason eg no other bugger wants them, thus we now have a team that is so poor in all dept its untrue, i do like cambel though and hope we can sign him, taylor looked quality before the broken foor and now the arrest thing arounf his neck,

so what can we do, well for me hyam must be a must start he has pace passion and a great tackle and a nice touch, n daw may switch things around but im unconvinced atm about him, he makes leadboots look awsome and for me thats saying something but i think thats my point at times we all moaned about him and norris but atm we would have them back with open arms as our engine room of a midfield is non exsitant, and defo needs sorting apart from hyam who else can we bring in, that must be a must in jan finding a gem from div 1 to fill this slot, because with div 1 players they will want to come here and play there back sides off, aswell as the usual cb decnt left winger with a wicked cross, but we must come out against forrest with all guns blazing because if we dont we are going to get mullered, thats a fact, but im sure mick will sort it, but i feel he needs to give the likes of hyam a go as he is better than coker and ndaw in my opion he may not be star class yet but if he is better than he should play end off.

WE ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST 18 MTS OR SO.MICK I AGREE HAS TAKEN ON A MASSIVE CHALLANGE BUT ITS HIS JOB TO SORT US OUT.I DONT UNDERSTAND GETTING IN ORR OR BARNETT, CLEARLY FROM A SUPPORTERS VIEW HYMN HAS TO START,WHAT DOES SCOTLAND HAVE TO DO, GIVE MONSTER MOSHI A CB POSITION AND GET PACEY WINGERS IN OUR STRIKERS WILL SCORE IF CHANCES ARE CREATED.GIVE OUR TOWN PLAYERS A CHANCE THEN MAKE YOUR MIND UP IN JAN MICK...

More evidence of the shambles we are - the task MM and his crew are faced with must not be under estimated.
Roll on January (can't come soon enough) - and let's start again by having an early 'spring clean' - there's no other answer unfortunately.

Satisfied with a point at home to Peterborough ? - should never be the case.
Not a single shot, on or off target, in the first half !!!!

i watched moshni vs the under 21s he played centre back, every ball he headed clear went over the half way line,(not just out of the area),and he also scored with a 35yd left foot rocket, his workrate and tackling was tenacious,so give him a run in the team i think he will surprise a lot of people

Thinking about it, Drury has to come back in for me, he's the only midfield link man we have in the squad!
