Clegg: Harry Speculation Laughable
Tuesday, 25th Sep 2012 15:46

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has dismissed weekend speculation that Harry Redknapp was set to take over as manager of the Blues as “laughable”. Clegg says he is confident that current boss Paul Jewell can turn things around despite the disappointing start which sees Town in 23rd in the Championship.

Reports prior to kick-off on Saturday claimed that some bookmakers had suspended betting on Redknapp joining the Blues, although at least one of those cited was still offering odds of 20-1 at the time.

Clegg, speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, says that there is nothing in claims that Redknapp — or any other boss — has been talked to about the Town job: “I can absolutely assure you that there have been no conversations with any other managers. The stuff about Harry is laughable really.

“People put two and two together and made about 27. Harry went out [to the Sir Bobby Robson Classic golf tournament in Portugal in the summer] as part of the Ipswich Town team. He’s done that in previous years. It’s not something we’ve made a big shout about, but all of a sudden people see Marcus and Harry together.

“Marcus and Harry have known each other for a number of years and it’s well known that he is one of the many people that Marcus consults with from the football family when making decisions.”

The chief executive says he is confident that Jewell can get the Blues moving in the right direction: “No doubts at all [that Paul is the man for the job].

“He’s the manager and it’s business as usual. We’re desperately trying to turn this situation around. Paul’s more conscious than most people in terms of what needs to happen.

“He’s a man who puts huge pressure on himself and I’m confident that we are going to turn this season around.”

However, he admits that if things don’t improve, a change would eventually be made: “We live in a dynamic and very fluid environment and of course there’s a tipping point.

“There’s a tipping point that comes with every manager but I’m not going to tell you when that tipping point is because it will depend on a number of factors which have to be taken into account as we go down this particular road.

“I continue to have every confidence in Paul and his ability to turn things around, and I hope that he will do.”

It's not laughable, because it shows how unhappy people are about whats happening at the club, If i was one of the 'key men' I would feel partly responsible for these kind of rumours because it's their decisions that determine our future and at the moment I can think of one of those decisions that is failing.

So obvious he said the same thing about supporting Jewell this time last year and we have gone absolutely no where - this bloke is clueless, he hasn't particularly helped Jewell with the signings he wanted, mozzied off to the Olympics and to be quite frank has been worse than the manager.
You've come up with Championship team striving for promotion + ambitious player we need to sign = League 1 wages!
It's laughable he's still here as CEO.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ...... that' my nervous laugh..... Never mind we couldn't have afforded Harry's dog's demands and wages... Never was gonna be Harry he lives in millionaires row, Ipswich would just be too far a jaunt!

He's back from the Olympics then!

I wondered what had happened to the 'comedy turn' at PR.

“I continue to have every confidence in Paul and his ability to turn things around, and I hope that he will do.”

So basically the 'master plan' is to sit and hope! Priceless!!

Such a wise man? I'm so glad I invested in a season ticket. I'm really looking forward to the next home game.

Thought the only factor was continuing to losing games

As you read twtd a bit..do you know what else is laughable Clegg? Your failings to complete moves for players here and how Jewell has still got the job! Another laughable moment is how you're still our CEO.

Paul's more conscious than most people in terms of what needs to happen. What does that mean? Us supporters know nothing? If Jewell knows what needs to happen then why has he not done the things to make things happen? It is time the management of this club stood up for the fans, and indeed tried to understand us.lets face it if we keep performing as we are there will soon be very few of us left.

Well said floridaboy, a lot of people on here are too quick to jump on the manager but he will get us through this. We'll be in the top half by christmas

It seems to me that the ME is happy with us not making any progess ,and content with the way things are going as nothing has changed over the last 5 years, the club needs a good shake up from top to bottom, fans are becoming very frustrated and will soon start talking with their feet.

I'm not laughing Simon. In fact, I haven't felt positive enough about Ipswich to laugh for years and that's mainly down to many factors including largely you! It's not Clegg's fault he is out of his depth but we really need someone in who knows how to run a football club. Running a football club on the cheap doesn't have to mean running a football club badly!

Shame that Harry was never going to be our manager - I thought, living in Poole myself (but not the same part as Harry !) that we could car share to home games occasionally!!

PJ said that it would take 10 games to know - so I say, ok let's give him the three more games and let's see if he is honourable enough to walk if we don't get at least 7 points from them .... or if ME is man enough to make a move in good time for a pre-Christmas review of the squad before the Transfer Window with Money to spend.

floridaboy - hear hear! It's tough being a Town fan because a lot of us have enjoyed success as supporters, we know what it feels like. That's what makes it hard for me. I think Jewell has been given a few more games at least.
