Drury Not Worried By Contract Situation
Tuesday, 18th Sep 2012 06:00

Luke Hyam may be on the brink of signing a new deal but midfield colleague Andy Drury insists he is not concerned about being in the last year of his Portman Road contract.

Drury, 28, admits he is even uncertain as to the specified number of games he must play this season to trigger a clause guaranteeing him an extension of another 12 months at the club.

The player snapped up from non-league Luton for £150,000 in January last year has so far made 40 appearances, 11 of which have been as a substitute, and scored two goals.

He said: “The club have an option, depending on how many appearances I make. I’m not too sure what the number is to be honest with you. It’s not something I’m worried about at the moment. I just want to carry on and enjoy my football.

“I’ve been in the game long enough. I’ve had one-year deals before at my previous clubs. Whatever will be, will be — that’s the way I look at it. It’s a lovely club and somewhere I’d like to stay for a few seasons. But sometimes, as a player, it’s not always in your own hands.”

Drury is satisfied with the progress he has made with Ipswich, especially after going on loan to Crawley almost exactly a year ago and returning much the better for the experience of scoring four times in 15 games, a healthy contribution towards the Red Devils’ ultimate promotion to League One.

He added: “I didn’t really get much of a chance until January and when it came along I took it. I’ve played near enough every game since then and I just want to make sure I play well enough to keep hold of it.

“Other players are waiting for their chance and when it comes they know they need to grab it. I just need to keep doing my best and hope to stay clear of injury if I’m going to stay in the side.”

They seem to keep most of the players in the dark on their last year of their contracts.

He has performed better than I expected, but still has a LOT of work to do to reach a good level of consistency; I hope he stays on the proviso he continues to improve

I find it ridiculous that he doesn't know how many games he needs to play to trigger another year, he must do, doesn't sound particularly bothered about playing for town, won't worry about this, he's not good enough anyway, just get lee Martin signed up!

Drury and Ellingtn should think about starting a hard landscpe business if the football falls through.

Surely he has a copy of his contract at home with the specified numbers of games written in it to trigger and extra year. This number would be foremost in my mind if I were him!

I think Drury is doing okay, although I am not sure I would have selected him ahead of Luongo and Hyam at the weekend.

Well said leftback, I agree he must know how many games he has to play to trigger another deal, just does not seem interested. Time to go.

Phil, there seems to be a slight discrepancy in the text.

From Drury's quote it suggests that actually the club has an option to keep him if he plays a certain number of games, whereas the text above suggests it is more similar to Scotland last year ie if a number of games is hit the club afre committed to another year.

Certainly if it's the former it makes more sense that Drury doesnt know what the threshold is, as either way it's out of his hands.

Let him go for nothing - or bring in someone else who is no better for something .... seems an easy option. He is as good as our squad, and if we are not going to improve it massively then he deserves another year. Just my humble opinion !!!

""Drury, 28, admits he is even uncertain as to the specified number of games he must play this season to trigger a clause guaranteeing him an extension of another 12 months at the club.""

Just shows how clever footballers are, to not know what your terms and conditions are seems to be rather strange????

He and Hyam showed their worth last season as a partnership and may have saved PJ's job but the manager has no confidence in the players he has and prefers to rely on panic buys and loan signings.

Expect Drury knows exactly how many games and is keeping that info to himself, otherwise like others have said, he must be a bit stupid to not know these crucial details for his employment.
IMO this is a player who Town have done well from a lower league and relatively modest outlay. Not the finished article but often makes up for a lack of skill but giving more effort than others.
Like Mark said, he has done ok but Hyam and Luongo would start ahead of him IMO. If he gets a new contract can see it being a 1 year.

I'm not surprised he's not worried. Either sign with a pay rise or leave on a free on a pay rise. Not a great player but might as well keep him. He has presence in the middle and we need the numbers.

@bluey123. On what exact basis can you say that Jewell has 'no feeling for the club'? Seems a bit of an assumption to me.

he has no feeling because he couldn't be bothered to a get team together for the new season and by spending all his time on his allotment in Bradfoed.

@Edinburgh_Blue. On the basis of the last 21 months, I would imagine.

I read on the star that 10 out of the 21 players are out of contract by the end of this season and I actually point the finger at Clegg for this!

But then again if your going to back your manager and he's in his last year of his contract, why would they re sign these players if a new manager comes in, god the wholes thing looks a bit of a joke.
