Holloway: Scoreline Flattered Us
Monday, 27th Aug 2012 06:00

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway insisted that Saturday’s 6-0 scoreline was hugely flattering to his side and that the Blues played as well as anyone his top of the table team has faced so far this season. The Tangerines boss is confident that Town will do well during 2012/13.

Holloway said: “Obviously I’ll take that but you can’t be false about it. I think that’s as good as anybody’s played against us, ironically. They probably caused us more problems than others.

“The own goal, Cresswell didn’t deserve that, he was actually worried about Kevin Phillips, he got in the right position and unfortunately for him it went in.”

The Seasiders manager felt the goals and their timing came changed the complexion of the match: “I think the big difference were the goals and when we got them.

“I thought [Thomas Ince’s] first one was quite sublime, brilliant. Out of nothing as well. He had a little shimmy and ‘Bang!’ before you know it, it’s in.

“I felt sorry for them because before you knew it they were picking the ball out of their net three times. I think Incey’s made that difference. He’s created three, he’s scored two and he’s completely on fire at the moment. Hopefully that fire won’t go out.”

The Bristolian says he expects Town and Paul Jewell to have a good campaign despite Saturday’s result: “I think Paul’s going to have a good season. They look a really good side. They look fresh, they look young.

“That’s what happens sometimes. Once the third goal goes in it’s very difficult to get your momentum back. But on the whole, that is never, ever the scoreline it should have been and I know that.

“He didn’t deserve that, his lads didn’t deserve that. You’ve got to keep believing. That’s as sharp a team as I’ve seen for quite a while.

“They’re flowing, the reports we’d had were really good. They should have won their first game, they unfortunately didn’t. The second game, they were excellent and won 1-0.

“We knew how tough it was going to be but we just got the breaks at the right time. I hope that continues from now until the end of the season.

“Good luck to Jewelly, I really like him, he’s a fantastic manager and I’ll take that all day long. Very, very flattering and that wasn’t ever what it should have been, in my opinion.”

Holloway says he’s not concerned that displays like Saturday’s will see Premier League clubs moving in for Ince: “I’m not worried about Incey at all. I think his dad’s honest appraisal of where he is is something I will be very thankful for.

“His dad’s made it right to the top and I believe his boy’s going to, but you’ve got to learn your trade. I think [Paul Ince] is totally convinced he’s in the right place to develop.”

What sort of message does a result like that send to the rest of the Championship? “It sends out a message that we were very fortunate on the day to do that.

“There isn’t anything else I could say. Were we that much better than them? Maybe our finishing, yes.

“If they’d have got one of those goals at a certain time, if they had scored the third goal in the game, that might have been us in trouble. It’s that close at this time of the year.

“I’m glad it’s gone our way but that shouldn’t raise anybody’s expectations or hopes about us. We’re still Blackpool. But I like what we do and I like the way we do it and hopefully my lads will gain a bit of confidence.”

Blah blah blah..........it's a result business and our result on Saturday is the fourth time we have shipped in over four goals under Jewell in the short time he has been here!
Where is the progress???
Tell me exactly how we as a club are so much better than we were under Keane?

I was at the game on Saturday, and I think Holloway is quite correct. We played well in the first half, and were very unlucky to go in 2-0 down. Clearly we need a few additions to the squad, and need a bit more height in the team, but this looks a far better team than a year ago.

I was at the 4-0 loss at Burnley last year, and felt far worse after that.

No surprise to see that, of all the news items posted today, this has the least comments.

The opinions of an experienced and respected football manager who thinks we are actually a good team who gave his side problems don't presumably suit the agenda of the armchair moaners who think they know best.

Menachino - Spot on lad! Iv always really liked Ian Holloway, he has always been very respectful to the point I think he has a soft spot for ITFC, wish Blackpool all the very best, they do things the right way and along with Ollie are a breath of fresh air!

Legend. You talk about lack of progress and at the same time state Jewell has been here a short time. Contradiction here???

Thomas Ince has infinitely more flair and skill than his dad. If he can match his dads energy, stamina & determination he is going all the way.
He is definitely the Leagues form player right now, an awesome prospect.

I hope Holloways comments dont let the players think they are off the hook.
They have to knuckle down, work hard and get back to winning ways!

Always liked Ian Holloway...like him even more now. It's how we recover from this that's important, hopefully it hasn't knocked the confidence too much. Keep the faith people, this is the most promising side we have had for a good few years & if PJ can add good players to the squad by Friday I think we'll do well despite the result Saturday

Ian Holloway, a really nice guy. Didn't he apply for the Town job at the same time as Jim? I suspect he would have done a rather better job here than Magilton and Keane! (but then anyone in charge would have done better than Keane)

This time last year we were utterly embarrassed at Peterborough. After that we went on a poor run of form. Let's not judge the team on Saturday, but how they respond. This is the perfect opportunity to see how much progress we've actually made...

I never thought I could like a team after drubbing us 6-0, but I am fond of Blackpool and Ian Holloway helps a lot with that. Hope they do well this season, but next time not at the expense of us!

Blackpool will go up, unless something bizarre happens. This reminds me of the Barnsley game. Stuffed them 6-1 if I remember correctly, then faced them in the play-offs. All the feedback from those at the game is we didn't deserve to go 3 down, but when we did, their was no motivation to get back in it... tbh, I don't blame them.

From everything so far, we are a marked improvement... but it will be interesting to see how the fans, not just the players, come back from this. If we get behind the team, I think this will be a blip. If we get on their backs/moan/fall silent, it could turn into another nasty run of results. The consequence of this result, imo, is as much in the hands of the fans as it is in the players.

Seems Ollie is more upbeat about ITFC then most of us supporters are! Got to love the guy, a real character and deserves all success he has achieved in last 3 seasons and possibly again this year.
Its upto the players now to turn it around and show it was just a freak result. They have the perfect chance to start that recovery Tuesday night.
Lets hope Ollie's positivity rubs off on them a bit

"Legend"... You sound like a proper moron. Have you been to any games this season? Tell me any way in which we resemble the side we were under Keane? Things are going well at PR, progress is so obvious. The positive reaction of the majority of town fans speaks for itself.

according to the eadt Blackpool had 8 shot's on target and scored from 6 of them. Now not even Man Utd and co are that good so it was one of those games folks. as many people on here say, it's now how quickly recover from it.
