Jewell Pleased to Finish With a Win But Still Angry
Jewell Pleased to Finish With a Win But Still Angry
Saturday, 28th Apr 2012 15:47

Blues boss Paul Jewell was pleased to finish the season with a win but was unhappy with his side allowed Doncaster back into a match he thought should have been settled inside the first half.

Jewell said: “It’s nice to finish on a victory but I wouldn’t say it was a high. I thought we were cruising at 2-0, and then they got back in it at 2-1 and I thought we were distinctly average in the second half, which shows you that we need to improve the squad.

“The manner in which we concede goals is just not good enough. We don’t do the simple things well enough.

“The problem is that when we get 2-0 up or start a bit of a run we start thinking we’re players and we don’t do the simple things that got us to that stage in the game.

“There are too many players who think they can flick it and give silly fouls away and I even saw one player today [Tommy Smith] give them the ball back for a freekick. I couldn’t believe it, I’ve never seen it before. We should win the Fair Play League for that.

“We just do too many stupid things. I’m really annoyed and angry today because at 2-0 we played well and we should have been out of sight. We had chances to go three or four goals up before they scored, we’ve got to kill them off and we don’t and we’re always susceptible to conceding goals.”

He felt the display was a microcosm of the campaign as a whole: “It sums up the season. For half an hour until we scored the second goal we were in control, we looked like we were going to score every time we went forward, but then we give teams a foothold in games because we stop doing the simple things, the unglamorous things that have got us into those situations. Once we think we’ve cracked it we’re nowhere near as good a team.”

Jewell was pleased to give 16-year-old Byron Lawrence his debut, while Jimmy Bullard came back into the team for the first time since February: “Byron was lively. When the keeper made a save, he was following in. We’ve been trying to get him into the team for a while and we just thought today we’d just give him 10 minutes after the goal.

“Jimmy’s had his difficulties with illnesses and other stuff, but Jimmy’s here next year and every team is picked on its merits, so there’s no one in, there’s no one out of the door. I think today highlighted the need for four or five players to come into our squad.”

The Town boss was delighted for Ryan Stevenson, who scored his first goal for the club: “It was a terrific goal. I think Chopra was disappointed because he put the rebound in. I don’t know whether it was over the line or not, I’ve not seen it again.

“In the first half we could have been out of sight. We had Lee Martin and Chopra against the goalkeeper and we don’t even score. We hit the bar and it’s come down and hit Chopra and bounced out. As I say, we could have been out of sight.”

Doncaster boss Dean Saunders, who felt Stevenson’s goal hadn’t crossed the line was disappointed with the way his team began the match: “We started the game sloppily and I’ve never seen us misplace so many passes.“

“We gave three goals against — penalty, a corner and 35-yarder off the bar, three goals. All the chances they got, we gave them.”

Question for those who were there: how did the midfield shape up? I assume from the teamsheet that Drury and Stevenson were the central two. How did that work?–Stevenson seems more of an attacking player than a real CM, so I am wondering if the balance was right.

I'm sorry but we shouldn't really be winning by 1 goal against the bottom relegated team. Shows that we still need more players. Hopefully Jewell will bring in a few like he says here...

Have to agree with TractorBoy66. A win is a win I guess.
I was listening to the game on the Radio and when brenner was interviewing Paul he didn't sound like a deal could be done with Coppinger. Did anyone else here that?

Hard to judge anyone today as it was so end of season. Stveneson looked better in a 4 than playing off the striker, Drury did his job well, Martin was given space and in the first half was good , Sonko looked rusty or is he just rubbish?

1200 away fans is a really good turn out
Real shame that we did not use the game to look at the youngsters a bit more, would have rather seen Carson play than Murphy.
Lots of work to do during the summer ,lets hope that we have a better 2012/13.

Season highs - Drury, Cresswell, JET, and Martin
Season lows - Jewell, Bullard, Chops, Clegg, Youth development
Birmingham GK looks like a done deal. I like tall keepers but don't know this guy. We need RB, 2 CB's, defensive midfielder, and a goal scorer with aerial ability. Hopefully at least one of those signings will show real ambition and hopefully most of them will be players with bright futures in front of them rather than behind them. It would be good to see Bullard and Chops improve on this seasons showing and Jewell learn from error strewn season. I accept we have budget constraints but why target players we can't afford. Transfer success for me would be judged by us landing more of our targets.

Jewell can talk the talk but whether or not he can walk the walk the jury's still out.
So far he can be compared with any American Government - he can be relied on to do the right thing but only after he has tried everything else first.

Chill PJ, we won, last game of the season. We all know we need new players, now's your chance to go and get em.

GK, 2xCB,RB and a Centre forward (Tall target man), but only get them if they're better than what we already have.

Lots of money spent on "past their best players" and just the 14 pts off the play offs.

1200 fans is a great turn out from the Town fans. It's really frustrating we have the fan base, stadium, facilities, money (Marcus Evans) and some good players all we need is some new additions of real quality and we could make a push for the play-offs next season.

Some people are easily satisfied- its been a pretty awful season where we never looked to be more than an average mid-table team.

A decent win to finish off a turbulent season.
After the horror show that was the first half of the season, PJ and players did very well to turn it around.
If we stregthen the squad in a few key areas and keep momentum going into new season we could be in with a good chance of top 6 next season.

Doyle helps in GK dept and Ward would add depth to def and midfield.
Already looking forward to next season!

remember i said this.

in paul jewell we have one of the best managers in our league and if marcus backs him he will prove it by us finishing in the top 2 next season.
we need 4 new first team players and 3 fringe players.

69 goals scored, same as Reading. 77 let in, not rocket science to see where our problem lies.

Well it was a win but far too many weaknesses with what we have. ALB again prone to poor kicking, Edwards not his usual foraging self.Smith like a fish out of water at left back and in hindsight Delaney should have there as he was poor today. Bright spots for me were Stevenson who once he gets a pre season with us could be a useful player. Martin buzzed around but after his booking was skating on thin ice. Chopra terribly disappointing and Scotland looked twice the player when he came on. Can understand why PJ letting Sonko go as he is so eratic. Not the best performance in the world but its a win and our support was excellent considering we had little to play for and the distance involved. Lots for PJ to do in the summer which will be crucial with 5/6 players needed.

Not sure you'll get them but good luck.
