Henderson Determined to Stay at Pompey and Fight for Survival
Henderson Determined to Stay at Pompey and Fight for Survival
Monday, 5th Mar 2012 11:15

Portsmouth keeper Stephen Henderson says he wants to stay with the crisis club to try to help them avoid relegation to League One but admits that the decision might be taken out of his hands. The former Irish U21 international was amongst the Blues’ trio of January Pompey targets with chief executive Simon Clegg telling TWTD that the move is still “a live issue” on Friday.

Henderson, 23, told the Portsmouth News: “I want to be here playing for these fans and doing everything I can to keep them up. I’ve said that and I stand by it.

“The decision may be out of my hands, though. Some of the boys have had to go because of the situation we are in.

“The way I feel, though, is I want to stay and keep this team in the Championship. It has to be done, though. I hate to say it but it’s either that or we go under.

“That’s the reality of it. The administrator is a good man and he is keeping us in the loop about the cutbacks and everything we need to do.

“There’s not a better man to get this club back on its feet. But I’m just going to keep playing unless I’m told to go. One thing’s for sure, I won’t go without a fight.”

I applaud him for doing the right thing and being brave enough to stand by the club you cannot you cannot put a price on that sort of committment and in the scheme of things people spend too much time worrying about things that never happen at this club anyway I hate to think how many stories about possible new players have brought about a massive response on here this season and usually there is nothing in it or the player just doesnt want to come here and lets be honest the management dont care what the paying public think anyway

I can't understand all the "we don't want him if he doesn't want to play for our club" comments on here in regard to the Portsmouth trio or any/all of our transfer targets. Let's face it, no player for another club, who did not grow up an Ipswich fan, is going to care about ITFC one bit more than any other club that might potentially sign him and will certainly have more loyalty (generally, unless a falling out) to their current club than one where he may or may not end up playing. All these comments from Henderson & others are fair & consistant with what one would expect from an employee of a club.
What would we have thought if Connor Wickham or Jordan Rhodes was saying "yes I'd love to play with Sunderland/Huddersfield" when asked BEFORE a transfer happened? I don't hear Harry Redknapp saying that he'd love to take over as England manager now, out of respect for his current club and the wish for them to do as well as possible before and after he goes.
Did Matt Holland, Darren Bent or Hermann start banging on about how great it would be to move on to Charlton, when things were going down the toilet here, ahead of those moves? No. I don't remember Matt bigging up Ipswich before he left Bournemouth either, but that didn't mean he didn't give 110% when he did join.

Yes, you are right up to a point Len but Henderson has gone way over the top. His "fight to stay here" comment smacks of immaturity. He obviously has not got a family to support nor given a single thought to his future. I do not think he is the type of player I would like to see come here with or without the over emphasised club loyalty. COYB

This shows you what parts his ears, if he signed on loan to us, PJ & Clegg have agreed that he can stay at Portsmouth and fight the good fight, i mean what more can we offer the bloke, we dont need him till next season, is he really that thick??

@BillBlue: That's a fair point, but wouldn't we have been loving such comments from our soon to disappear players before they were sold on back in the day? Maybe he is immature, maybe he feels he owes Portsmouth because they gave him his break, maybe he has been snared by some very possessive young lady in the area and he needs to say all the right things publicly ... before making a mad dash cross-country to freedom. In any event, I'd take little enough notice of any comments about wanting to stay put or loving clubs etc. by footballers these days. In the end they'll move for money or because the club wants them out or because they'll get more game time. It happens all the all, despite the pleas & badge kissing. If he, or any of the others mentioned sign for us, I'll start judging his/their commitment then.

Irrespective of where he wants to play, he doesn't actually look that good does he? League One may be a better level for him.

the headline should read:

"henderson too stubborn to be willing to leave the club he claims to support in order to help them avoid liquidation"

I think we should let the pompey players go bye bye. Three of them had the opportunity to join us but THEY demanded exccessive wages, so clearly they either have a Titanic mentality to carrry on regardless or they are filthy rich and don't need the money. Either way I will doff my cap to them for sticking bye the supporters, but think we should jog on by.

Rumour up here in Scotland is saying that Rangers will be releasing Neil Alexander, would be worth a sniff at him

Eireannach_gorm added 17:31 - Mar 5
Yep. Put all our efforts into targeting Alexander.

Forget the loyalty argument, its a waste of time. Fans should really cop on to the badge kissing. Players have to look after themselves and if they help us also thats great. Andrews and before him Jeffers and Murphy (first time) saved our ass and moved on for better money. Good luck to them all, I say. It's the mercenaries that don't produce the goods I have a problem with.

Neil Aexander is worth more than a sniff!! he was ace for us and we didn't stand in the way of his dream move when Rangers came calling.... unfinished business me thinks

I think that we don't need anything but just a little bit more quality now.

And cloning the first selection.

Also we need to start now with a sperm bank of talent.

Plenty of volunteers but not much zest.

One can only admire Henderson's loyalty whilst wondering at his stupidity

Firstly, unless 100% certain of a permanent deal, no point of loans for the rest of the season. It would be okay if we did a Peterboro with that Crawley striker - but with little to play we may as well play our own players.

Having said that, it's absolutely essential that we sign a keeper on a permanent deal this Summer. ALB is third choice at best. I find it remarkable that PJ has still failed to address this and the CB position. Sonko, Smith and Delaney may all leave this Summer - and with PJ already having to (embarrassingly) having to pay off one of his own signings, there is much to do this pre-season. Let's just hope PJ does 100% better than last year - where on the whole he failed miserably.

get a grip the lot. what is he going to say yeah i hate here im not getting paid and it im going to do something about it... fair play to him he has done right by portsmouth his club and if he was willing to show that passion to ipswich would love to have. there is not enough loyality in football any more. so i admire him for that. Surely its the least portsmouth fans deserve

Jas - Seriously, get over it. PJ had a major rebuilding job to do last summer (after Keane had made a right balls up of the squad). McAuley, our defensive linchpin, left for a Premier League team because he had not been offered a contract the previous summer. PJ made a number of signings, some of which didn't work, some of which have worked very, very well. Things are looking up, why don't you?

Also, I don't get why people are abusing Henderson for saying he would like to stay at Portsmouth? He clearly has his own reasons for wanting to stay(whatever they may be) and, if I were a Portsmouth fan, I wouldn't be very impressed if he had declared that he wanted to get out asap...

Well done to you Mr Henderson. This player is clearly in demand but is prepared to show loyalty in the face of adversity, a trait alien to football in these current times.
How many of our current players would show such loyalty?
I really hope Portsmouth can survive, great club and amazing supporters.
