Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Monday, 2nd Jan 2012 18:23

Town boss Paul Jewell was hugely disappointed by the Blues' 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, the Liverpudlian again left ruing individual defensive errors after Forest - who were without a goal in their last seven matches - netted three times for only the second time this season, the previous occasion having been when they last scored in the game against Town at the City Ground in November.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. Some of the defending which went on today was calamitous really and it’s not the first time this season.

“We created a few opportunities in the first half but we were always susceptible. Every time a ball went in the box or there was a long ball, there was blind panic.”

The Town boss says centre-half Ibrahima Sonko was a big loss: “I think we missed Sonko, I think he’s been a bit plus for us and he was missed today being suspended.

“There were straight long balls that we missed and all of a sudden they were at us and we were under pressure. They were meat and drink to most centre-halves but today for some reason we were all over the place.

“I take responsibility because I’m the manager, so it rests at my door,” he added. “But some of the individual basic errors from experienced players I’m struggling to explain.”

While conceding twice at one end, Jewell felt his side ought to have scored themselves at the other: “Daryl’s had two really good opportunities at the back post, JET’s had a header and he’s hit the underside of the bar.

“We’ve probably created more opportunities than them in the first half but we found ourselves two goals down.

“From their perspective, they’re great finishes, but the second goal should never have come to that. We were under pressure and gave the ball away. The lad did a little bit of skill and stuck it in the back of the net. We shoot ourselves in the foot.”

The Blues manager explained his change of formation, revealed that the missing Jimmy Bullard had phoned in sick: “Jimmy was ill, he rang me this morning about 10 o’clock and said he’s been up all night and there’s obviously been a bit of flu going around.

“Chopra’s been a bit low on confidence. I thought they might play with five in midfield and I just thought it would give Andy Drury a go. He did excellently, I thought he was a bright spark today. We’ve created more opportunities today at home than we have for a while.”

Jewell defended himself against accusations that playing only Jay Emmanuel-Thomas up front was an overly cautious approach: “Daryl Murphy’s an attacking player, Lee Martin’s a winger and Andy Drury’s an attacking midfielder. I don’t think it was a defensive system.

“Against Derby we played 4-4-2 and we created fewer chances then. You can talk about systems all day, it’s about players. We created more opportunities today than we did against Derby.

“You always have to nullify the opposition but for me it wasn’t a defensive formation at all. You can talk about formations all you like, Barcelona don’t play with a striker and you wouldn’t say they’re defensive.

“And if you give goals away like we did today, it doesn’t matter how many forwards you play."

Jewell admitted that it was another poor result and says his side need to improve, particularly at the back: “We’re hugely disappointed and some of the defending was embarrassing but it’s not as if we’re the champions of Europe and Notts Forest are mugs, it’s two teams who both think they should be in the top echelons of the league.

“But I didn’t expect us to be as bad as that defensively, we were very, very shaky. OK, we’ve lost Sonko, but we’ve got to be doing better than that.”

Skipper Grant Leadbitter added: "We can't give goals away in the manner that we have done today.

"We're doing it far too often and you just can't do it at this level or you are going to get punished.

"When you give goals away early in the game you make things hard for yourself, but that is football and we need to look ahead to the next game."

Forest manager Steve Cotterill was delighted with the win, which he says has been on the cards: “If you look at the performances, that result has been coming, unfortunately it’s been taking too long to come.

“I thought the goals we scored today were outstanding, three fantastic goals and we’ve done it with nine players who would predominantly be in your 16, of which seven would be in your starting line-up, not here through injury.”

What on earth is PJ thinking about? Edwards is certainally no defender who keeps getting caught out of position far to often. Also can't make out why the electronic board used by the fourth official has no number 6 or 9 on it. How on earth Leadboots and Jet managed to stay on the pitch for 90 plus minutes only he will know. Can't get my head around the idea of subbing Martin and Murphy who I thought were 2 of our better players today.

lincolnshireblue - you are obviously one of the 'all too nice' Ipswich fans - ever thought that with too many thinking like you, it becomes the 'cozy club' it is - players needn't perform, success is not necessary, no expectations etc; Thus the 'powers that be' can laugh all the way to the bank without undue concern.

Because (in your own words) you, and like minded people will always be there, and always cough up. Others you must appreciate - have more ambition and expect more.

With regard to the Manager, Who would you have and be sensible about it. There is no one of quality out there who we could either afford or who would want to come here to do the job .

Anyone from league 1 doing well would be a massive improvement.

I have been travelling over from Ireland since 1968 to watch Town, by beloved Town and never in my life have I seen such a woeful Ipswich Town side as I did today. I have suffered a lot of abuse from my friends in Ireland as many of them support Mun Utd, Liverpool, Celtic etc, but Ipswich are my team and always will be. I am making an appeal tp the manager to do the decent thing and walk away tomorrow. I find it difficult to understand why he brought in so many ``has beens'' and indeed ``never has beens''. He has brought our once proud club to its knees. Paul Jewell was out of the game for to long when he was appointed manager. He is living in the past. Hopefully he will do the right thing and walk tomorrow, because if not we are heading to Division One.

Leadboots back, our captain and leader and 2 defeats! Had he played against barnsley and Derby I think we would have lost those.

So, forest do the double over us scoring 6 goals and we have also lost to doncaster and milwall who are below us.

Next up, Birmingham away, blackpool home, Leeds away and west ham home. That is a worry.

Given the decisions made by Evans in sacking magilton, bringing in keane then jewell, if jewell goes i am worried who we he will bring in.

Last time would have gone for Chris hughton, this time would go for curbs and Holland.

Ps, who amongst all those coaches is a defensive coach? God knows what they do in training.

Another point is that ticket prices are beginning to get well out of hand!!!
We are not going to be able to attract new fans if football like that is going to be served up and they are having to pay £36 per ticket - I wouldn't want to pay that much to watch half of the Premier League's teams let alone a struggling team in the Championship which never plays well at home!!!

Dissboyitfc & lincolnshireblue - get a Hotel room! :)

I'm not a season ticket holder, live to far away but even if I didn't I wouldn't get a season ticket, in these financial times to watch such inept football (saw the games against Hull, Doncaster and Derby) is saddening and I can't afford to throw £400 odd quid away and be depressed by it ( I can do that by watching Eastenders for free), I've supported the Town since 1975 and John Duncan's era pales into insignificance compared to this team and football and the clubs in the bigger leagues and their expectations have changed dramatically even since the late 80's. Not everybody can be winners but unfortunately we're not even mediocre nowdays with all the money put into the squad. New Year let's ring in the changes!

Unless something is done and done soon, we could, quite realistically next season, be playing the likes of Crawley, Cheltenham and Southend should they go up and we continue to sink towards oblivion.

If the thought of that is not sobering enough I don't know what else could be. Please
ME, it's time to remove Jewell and get Clegg to focus on the Olympics. Before it's too late would be good too please

This time last year, when Roy Keane was sacked, we were 19th with a goal difference of -6 and 28 points. Tonight we're 19th with a goal difference of -13 and 27 points. Tomorrow, after Bristol City have played Millwall, we have to drop to 20th, whatever the score in that game. Where is the improvement over the last 12 months? What has the change of management achieved?

Our club is performing poorly, it's very sad. However, my thoughts are with Gary Ablett's family for his untimely death. He spent a bit of time at our club, maybe we should think of things that are more important in life. RIP Gary.

I'm really beginning to believe we will get relegated this season, can't believe I'm saying it...then see we've been linked with signing Alan Smith from Newcastle OMG, what the hell is going on??
If we are going down, lets do it with a team full of players that care, maybe youngsters. I know we have signed many players but look at Charlton, 21 players in and going very well under a good young manager who cares with a passion about the club...there's a clue there somewhere Messrs Evans and Clegg
FFS Sort it out b4 it's too late!!!!

This probably is the worst side we've had since the end of the Robson golden era. Although the Forster (not actually his fault, injuries/age) - Parkin frontline comes to mind. We've even played really well at times (West Ham away, Brighton at home). But we've also been so poor, so often. I no longer believe Jewell or his staff have any impact over whether we're good, bad or indifferent. If you were starting from scratch which of our players would you pick even for a decent championship side - let alone dreaming of the premiership? Barely any of them! It's time to do what we should have done in the first place find a young ambitious passing manager and build a team.

What a con trick Roy Keane, and now Paul Jewell have pulled on Clegg and Evans. In three catastrophic years ITFC has been been turned into a gravy train for joy riding wannabe managers, chancers who think there is no self-damage in splashing someone else's cash and gambling on high salary, veteran players for a chance at big time glory. Utterly short-sighted and self-serving. Our owners have to face it now, they have been led up the garden path twice. Another sequel to this sorry saga could be devastating. We must target young managers with genuine passion and drive to succeed for those around them, not only themselves, who DESERVE to be and belong in the Premier League, in the mould of Paul Lambert (who Clegg stunningly failed to recruit, despite him being under his nose), Brendan Rogers or Roberto Martinez. Dare I say it, but with Clegg at the helm, we are going to end up with Neil Warnock next. Lee Clark has the geordie connection the club has thrived on in the past, Gus Poyet would be a fantastic character in the Premier League, or how about Nigel Clough? Someone to represent ITFC and its meaning to so many people. I'm sick of this current situation, and seeing it go on is nauseating.

Having read all this I first want to talk about today's game. I don't often get to see the team because of university, but I'm there as often as I'm home and go to away matches when I can and today, compared to the last forest game, I felt fairly entertained. Our problems came from a few too many terrible individual errors from only a handful of players.

There is no escaping that our centre backs were awful. If I had defended like Delaney for the second goal for my team I would have been pulled straight off by my coach, for that alone he deserves to never play for the club again, unfortunately he plays far to often and costs us far too much. Had Sonko been available, I'm not sure we'd have conceded any of those three goals. Murphy and Chopra were also a complete waste of space. Neither looked like they'd have scored had we played on until friday. It's been a while since I've seen so many chances ruined. Murphy's two far post attempts, JET's free header from 6 yards, no one on the end of countless crosses and a few good chances for chopra to latch onto something if he'd just tried a bit harder (such as Martin's scuffed shot).

Otherwise they barely threatened. They had the first half of the first half, the first 10 of the second with all of those corners and what was effectively a counter attack against the run of play for the third goal. Otherwise most the game was played in their half. I expected Leadbitter to be poor, but he was surprisingly solid. He's not captain material, but he starts a lot of moves, had a couple of shots and scored his penalty, lucky or not. Drury looked decent, Martin and Edwards were causing lots of problems down the right (until Martin switched over and caused all the problems on the left) and JET also looked decent. His shot against the bar, causing a good save from range, two or three dangerous crosses, I think he looked lively. His touch wasn't always there and his style of play is peculair, but he looked dangerous and their inability to deal with him was highlighted by him winning the penalty out of nothing. Had we scored our chances and had Sonko at the back but put in the same performance, we'd have all said they played well. The team were let down by individuals today. I guess there question is when are our defenders going to stop costing us goals and when will the likes of Chopra decide to get interested again. I don't know, but Jewell needs to be seriously worried, and judging by his interview, I think he is.

Also, let's talk about age. ALB - played well, young for a keeper. Edwards, older than 30 but I think had a solid game, perhaps a better winger but I think we could do a lot worse. Ingy - poor and old, but definitely intended as cover. Delaney - poor, poor, poor but in his prime. Cresswell, average, but young and learning. Murphy, poor imo but in his prime. Bowyer, old, fine. Leadbitter, did well for me, in his prime. Drury, did well, mid 20s. JET, did well, especially considering he is young, inexperianced and rarely in the team, cut the guy some slack! Chopra, in his prime, was poor. Carson, okay, young. Martin, good, in his prime. Ellington, old, but looked fairly sharp. We didn't really play a bunch of old has beens today, and we still lost. SO let's not pretend age is the issue here...

In summary, it was a poor result but not an awful game. Had we scored first I think we'd have won. Had we had Sonko we'd have probably won. Had JET's shot gone in we may have picked up. It's fine margins, we've just seen too many of these games where we should have had a result. We need to see results, I know that, I just think we're closer than we think to them.

Let's give Jewell January, there's all this talk about what he needs to do. But by the time we sack him and find a manager (and there is no guarentee a) of getting someone like curbs or b) that the replacement will be any better, we thought it couldn't get worse than Jim, or Keane, and it did) we won't have a January to buy anyone anymore! We need to sign andrews, his goals and general play is always missed when he isn't in the side. We need him whatever the cost and make him captain, please! If there really is a chance for sharp then go for it! We need a striker who is going to score us some goals, none of them look capable! Otherwise, we need two centre halves, far more than a new right back. Don't care who they are, Jewell enquired over players such as Ibanez, Ferdinand, Woodgate and Upson and he needs to do the same, unless we get a top quality centre back, not just someone who's alright, remotely proven, or up and coming, we won't progress. We need someone who's going to take this team by the scruff of the neck and even if it is an old 'has-been'.

Marcus Evans, in other words, needs to get his wallet out. We were promised the wickham money would go on the squad. And it has to. I know it's not as black and white as this. But the board since Evans arrived have appointed managers who aren't up to the task and their money has been completely wasted. It's time to see it put to good use or, to my mind, I'd rather see them all walk and start completely again from the top down. A simple sacking and replacing of a manager will not simply solve all our problems. Jewell has to take the blame, but I still think he can turn this, with a bit of luck, confidence, and three or four new signings.

Did not go to the game; a matter of distance being 12 hour by flight and all that. So I could not say based on the game itself but purely from the perspective of results.

This being a results game (yes, one can have so many misses, hits on bar/uprights/woodward, MoM performance by the opponents' GK etc but that would not count as to who gets promoted or relegated), and based on the results for the first half of the season, PJ would do real well, and honourably at that, by gracefully leaving the club.

At the very least, he would be remembered as one who is not afraid to let go a job he knows he had failed to do it up to the high standards he purported to have set himself...
