Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Monday, 2nd Jan 2012 18:23

Town boss Paul Jewell was hugely disappointed by the Blues' 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, the Liverpudlian again left ruing individual defensive errors after Forest - who were without a goal in their last seven matches - netted three times for only the second time this season, the previous occasion having been when they last scored in the game against Town at the City Ground in November.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. Some of the defending which went on today was calamitous really and it’s not the first time this season.

“We created a few opportunities in the first half but we were always susceptible. Every time a ball went in the box or there was a long ball, there was blind panic.”

The Town boss says centre-half Ibrahima Sonko was a big loss: “I think we missed Sonko, I think he’s been a bit plus for us and he was missed today being suspended.

“There were straight long balls that we missed and all of a sudden they were at us and we were under pressure. They were meat and drink to most centre-halves but today for some reason we were all over the place.

“I take responsibility because I’m the manager, so it rests at my door,” he added. “But some of the individual basic errors from experienced players I’m struggling to explain.”

While conceding twice at one end, Jewell felt his side ought to have scored themselves at the other: “Daryl’s had two really good opportunities at the back post, JET’s had a header and he’s hit the underside of the bar.

“We’ve probably created more opportunities than them in the first half but we found ourselves two goals down.

“From their perspective, they’re great finishes, but the second goal should never have come to that. We were under pressure and gave the ball away. The lad did a little bit of skill and stuck it in the back of the net. We shoot ourselves in the foot.”

The Blues manager explained his change of formation, revealed that the missing Jimmy Bullard had phoned in sick: “Jimmy was ill, he rang me this morning about 10 o’clock and said he’s been up all night and there’s obviously been a bit of flu going around.

“Chopra’s been a bit low on confidence. I thought they might play with five in midfield and I just thought it would give Andy Drury a go. He did excellently, I thought he was a bright spark today. We’ve created more opportunities today at home than we have for a while.”

Jewell defended himself against accusations that playing only Jay Emmanuel-Thomas up front was an overly cautious approach: “Daryl Murphy’s an attacking player, Lee Martin’s a winger and Andy Drury’s an attacking midfielder. I don’t think it was a defensive system.

“Against Derby we played 4-4-2 and we created fewer chances then. You can talk about systems all day, it’s about players. We created more opportunities today than we did against Derby.

“You always have to nullify the opposition but for me it wasn’t a defensive formation at all. You can talk about formations all you like, Barcelona don’t play with a striker and you wouldn’t say they’re defensive.

“And if you give goals away like we did today, it doesn’t matter how many forwards you play."

Jewell admitted that it was another poor result and says his side need to improve, particularly at the back: “We’re hugely disappointed and some of the defending was embarrassing but it’s not as if we’re the champions of Europe and Notts Forest are mugs, it’s two teams who both think they should be in the top echelons of the league.

“But I didn’t expect us to be as bad as that defensively, we were very, very shaky. OK, we’ve lost Sonko, but we’ve got to be doing better than that.”

Skipper Grant Leadbitter added: "We can't give goals away in the manner that we have done today.

"We're doing it far too often and you just can't do it at this level or you are going to get punished.

"When you give goals away early in the game you make things hard for yourself, but that is football and we need to look ahead to the next game."

Forest manager Steve Cotterill was delighted with the win, which he says has been on the cards: “If you look at the performances, that result has been coming, unfortunately it’s been taking too long to come.

“I thought the goals we scored today were outstanding, three fantastic goals and we’ve done it with nine players who would predominantly be in your 16, of which seven would be in your starting line-up, not here through injury.”

Just been looking at Curbs' record. It's good, think he could do for us what O'Neil's doing at Sunderland. Failing that Matt Holland still loves us, but can we afford to risk an untested manager? One thing is certain, I'm not into sackings & I like Jewell, but his record is appalling & he has to go NOW!!

No defence Mr Jewell, literally.

2 wins in 12, 7 points out of 36 is relegation. 9 games where we have let in 3 or more goals.

Today was utter cr*p and drury was our best player after being on loan crawley.

Wouldn't give him no more money to waste and we really need to start again.

It's decision time Mr Evans cos if it stays as it is portman road will be empty.

as i said elsewhere jewell should go or we go down. We are going downhill and last year jewells target was to avoid relegation, this year it was top 10 (at minimum) and now it is now probably avoid relegation seeing our form. As you can see there is no progress and realistically we should be in the top 10 but i'm sad to say it probably won't happen under jewell. With Keane I felt he would turn it around but with Jewell I don't see it happening. I think ME and Clegg may have hired the wrong man. We were linked with many good managers such as Hughton who has done well both this season at Birmingham and his 1 1/2 years at Newcastle where he took them from Championship obscurity and would have taken them to the top 10 of the premier league (Pardew has done well though). I think we need a change, we played 4-4-1-1 against a team that hadn't scored in 7 games so why be so focused on defence. Also we need to stop buying 30 olds + from the premier league and instead buy young or at least use some of our own players such as o'connor, peters and carson who I would like to see more of etc.
Also we have some good players in our academy in Lawrence who has already been on the bench at 15 and laverly who is sadly leaving us

When i saw the starting line up i had my head in my hands, my head was still there when we went 1-0 down. I know that Drury was something of a star man but to me that shows how shocking everyone else was.

Simply can not understand why people are still supporting PJ? 9 defeats in 12 (lucky against Derby, one good half against Barnsley and a poor draw at Leicester as we were one up and missed a penalty). Beaten by a team who have only scored against US in their last TEN GAMES. There will however still be some who blame Roy, Jim, Joe and George - get real. PJ has been here just short of a year and has FAILED. This is far worse than the previous managers. Shocking. PJ has relied on loans and has been injury prone freebies (on big contracts). Today, the loanees have gone (many of us mentioned this months ago - so where was the Plan B?) and Bowyer gets erm, injured, Bullard is erm out: Whilst Ellington and Ingimarsson are two of the worst players I have ever seen at Town. Then, there is Chopra; £2M for JET ... need we go on ... oh yes, a manager who thought it was wise to play ONE UP FRONT against a Forest team who had failed to score in 7. PJ will take us down. he will also ensure we have attendances of 12K before he is done. The lovers can convince themselves otherwise/dream up some fantasy - but the reality is PJ is doing here as he did at Derby.

ME needs to stand up - admit his mistake and SACK JEWELL NOW.

JEWELL OUT! JEWELL OUT! JEWELL OUT!!

I was not able to get to the game today, some might say I was lucky. But no matter what, I wish I was there today to see for myself what went on.

Anyway, I cannot believe what I am reading today. Evans fault? if it was not for Evans we would not have had a Club to support. Jewell is taking responsibility for what happened today even though as far as I am concerned it's the players. They must have gone out there thinking this will be 3 points in the bag and got stung. It is the players that are letting the Club and Supporters down, although having said that, we had more shots on target and off target than NF.

As far as I am concerned it has always been the defence that has let us down, this season, last season and the season before that. Sort out the defence and the rest will fall into place. Don't take it out on Evans, cos if he walks the Club will be gone.

With regard to the Manager, Who would you have and be sensible about it. There is no one of quality out there who we could either afford or who would want to come here to do the job .

Still trying to work out what Clegg does, so I will not go there.

So as I have said, it's down to the players and to a degree some of the supporters who no matter what just get on the Backs of the players, Manager, etc from the moment they turn up at the club. To those supporters, GET A LIFE.

Now lets get on with supporting our team and let the people in power deal with the issue.

WoodfordTim - but PJ knew Collins was leaving - he signed Ingimarsson and knew Sonko was a booking away from a suspension. Other clubs had players lined up and officially signed them yesterday - so why no Plan B from PJ - copmpletely his fault the defence was not addressed before now. 100%. No more excuses please.

DIRE SITUATION - and the longer it is allowed to continue, the lower the standing in the 'face of Football' the Club becomes.

If this is not rectified NOW - by the end of the season it will be almost impossible to attract a decent Manager or Players to the Club.

NO CHOICE - HE HAS TO GO NOW.

Awful, just awful.

No cohesion. Ingimarsson awful and 3 inches too small, and I thought he was good on the floor? Obviously not. ON PAPER a rare bad signing by Jewell, along with Ellington (although he was decent when he came on).

Said on the forum, Chopra can go. Just a poor footballer. 7 goals is respectful but he's only scored in 5 games this season, which out of 23 is terrible. Can barely trap the ball let alone keep it and isn't anywhere near strong enough.

Drury played very well today, got stuck in, showed some vision and looked up for it. Leadbitter the same on a lower scale, just a shame most the rest of the team didn't.

Don't understand how we can go from matching Reading and playing well (away) to playing so awfully at home to Forest.

Jewell has to take blame for the way we play with the ball, absolutely, there is no movement whatsoever. But when Delaney makes the tackle (lack of) he did for the second Jewell will be thinking 'what are you doing?' He can't take blame for embarrassing pieces of defending like that.

How did Ingimarsson ever make it as a centre back? Looks so small but everywhere I've read it says he's 6 foot?! Doesn't look it whatsoever, Sonko would have dealt with the third.

Cresswell didn't have his best game, needs to male his crosses more consistent, and I think went missing for the first although Bowyer was shocking giving the ball away so cheaply. Edwards missing for the third but was late and were obviously pushing for a goal.

JET did all right, so unlucky with the volley but needs to concentrate more, his mis control late on was humiliating. His lazy (not literally) style doesn't help. I think starting games helps him because he feels wanted, when on the bench and coming on he is seen as the second option. I know that's wrong on his part but true I think.

Jewell takes ultimate blame. Mistakes aren't his fault but general play is and any more results like this hereafter he will be do very well to keep his job. Performances at Reading and Leicester suggest he can do it but then serves this up, can't explain it at all.

Drury incision had shades of Healy coming in unexpected again Doncaster but that was one he got very right, its just a shame everything else was wrong.

Come on it's the new Year, let's get some new faces in including a new manager and staff. This cannot go on, a record of W8 D3 L13 this season is simply not good enough, the funny thing is everybody is in uproar losing to goal shy Nottm Forest but the truth is when we lose the odd player in defence we can lose to anybody in this league as already proved and quite embarrassingly so. Jewell still shuffles his pack particularly in midfield and up front but the general assessment is he hasn't a clue what starting 11 he wants out and wants to maintain!
I too can remember the John Duncan era, I remember the 11,000 attendances and standing on fairly empty terraces watching dull games but we never lost 7 running and we were never this low in the league and we never had this financial input in. THESE ARE BAD TIMES AT THIS CLUB.
I swear if we get either Burley or Curbishley in they would certainly would have done a better job after a year than both Keane and Jewell, as Keanish said earlier I think there should be a democratic vote at this club for a new manager and not what the board thinks best (let this be a first).
Time for changes I think.

TimmyH democratic vote for a new manager, you must be joking? The suggestions on the list would be too numerous. Supporters can have opinions but luckily, as yet, can't pick new managers. They can, however, get managers sacked.

We are talking about a team that hasnt scored in 6 games. When did NF last score? oh yes, 3 against Ipswich Town. GO NOW.

lincolnshire - easy to have that opinion of supporters when you still have your sheckles in your pocket after today's game - 18,000+ have not.

The Players ARE Jewell's - therefore HIS responsibility whatever.

Perhaps it's you who should 'get a life' and practice what you preach - and just may be happy with what you see with your very eyes - although I suspect you wouldn't be somehow.

IF ? you are a season ticket holder, then of course you will have paid for your seat today in your absence anyway. Just be thankful you saved on travel costs today.

It's time to make a change. PJ Your not the right man to lead the club forward evidence shows and proves it. Do the right thing and walk Paul.
