Collins Unlikely to Return to Town
Collins Unlikely to Return to Town
Friday, 30th Dec 2011 07:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has admitted that the Blues are unlikely to sign former loanee Danny Collins on a permanent basis with the Stoke City defender probably preferring a switch to a club closer to his Cheshire home. Collins left Portman Road after an impressive 93-day loan last week.

Jewell says he’s not spoken to Potters boss Tony Pulis as yet but got the impression that Collins, whose fiancée recently gave birth to their first son, would prefer a switch to a side nearer to his Alderley Edge home: “I haven’t spoken to Tony, we’ve both been busy. Danny’s in a situation where he’s just had a new baby and I think he’s looking for something closer to Stoke.

“We haven’t had a lot of contact or encouragement on that one. I spoke to Danny before he left and thanked him and told him we’d like to bring him here but got the impression that maybe with his family situation he’s looking for something more in that area.

“I don’t think it’s anything to do with us, the club, I think [it’s what suits him] geographically at this moment, although that might change. It could change if we could sit down and they come to a deal but he’s got a year left of his contract at Stoke on Premier League money.

“I don’t want to count it out but I just get the impression that that might be a bit more difficult than I first thought.”

Premier League Wolves have been linked with the 31-year-old on a number of occasions, while North-West-based top flight sides like Wigan and Bolton could also move for the Chester-born defender.

Meanwhile, Jewell says there have been no developments regarding the contract recently offered to Josh Carson: “I still think that’s being thrown about between Simon Clegg and his agent. I spoke briefly last week with one of his representatives and they said it was ongoing.”

Carson, like Grant Leadbitter, is out of contract at the end of the season and the Blues boss says talks are also planned regarding the skipper's future: “The agent will get back to me and we’ll have a chat early next week.”

Fairly understandable attitude, unfortunately as a bit of an outpost and with dozens of clubs in NE and Midlands we will struggle to attract senior pro's.

Must be some of the reasoning behind why Norwich have targetted younger players from lower leagues who see them as a stepping stone and chance to prove themselves - not settled players with families.....hopefully PJ's scouts have identiified a few of these for January but I have my doubts!

shows the short sightedness of this management team, loan signings, three reasonably good players now gone , struggling to stay in this division and back to where we were at the start of the season. o cold winds doth blow.

Dont worry Clegg is dealing with it, nothing can go wrong.

Being in Australia I don't understand this attitude at all.
What is it, 2 hours tops from where he lives. Too many options that's what it is.
If he wants to play and earn he moves, family and all. Surely a weekly sojourn back to the midlands would appease the missus.
My wife and I managed to raise our 2 kids without being next door to our family.

Couldn't agree more! If he wants regular football then he decides where the family lives not them dictate to him. As for two hours tops! Wishful thinking. Three and a half at best.

peaky69 being in Australia you probably dont understand too much anyway, God save England and God save the Queen ....We looked quiet solid at the back against Leicester considering our CM's were all prodominently attacking and I cannot see why Ipswich are so desperate to sign a player who does not want to be here and was in our team when we was getting walloped week in week out. We need other players rather than Collins!

Peaky69 - you are spot on! Collins could land himself a two and half year contract here at PR, then move your family up here with him.

In the bigger picture no Collins means defensive problems for PJ and Ipswich. As it stands its only Sonko that is stopping any further thrashings, any injury to him and we are back to the comedy brothers in defensive. Will Sonko last two matches in three days and come away unscathed, will PJ attract a top CH to PR in January? To both questions - I doubt it!

I don't really understand the attitude of he's just had a young child and wants to stay close to home. Surely as the child has just been born it's easier to relocate at this stage rather than when the child has grown up a bit and settled in at school.

Should have made sure McAuley signed, he was already here & is putting in some decent performances for West Brom in the Premier, but then Town don't do clever, re: Jordan Rhodes

Finding a left footed defender who can actually defend properly is rare, will be missed, understandable reason though.
Keeping McAuley wouldn't have made a lot of difference, neither him or Sonko can play on the left CB role well. I do wonder where we'll go looking for one, Delaney and Smith just aren't good enough with their feet to play next to Sonko

Thanks for your efforts.

An excellent player, it will be interesting to see what is his next loan club.

People who have been talking about making McAuley sign and losing Jordan Rhodes (throw Norris into that mix too) need to think about why we attract these players then can't seem to keep them. I think (yes think, this is based on my completely unfounded, uniformed opinion only, before I get slated with the ususal how do you know) that Clegg has a lot to do with some very poor transfer/contract handling, he just seems stubborn and unwilling to negotiate. Remember the Shaun Derry saga from last year, he was in Keanes office, willing to sign but for some reason the deal couldn't be done. He only came from Palace and was 33 so I can't imagine he was demanding huge wages, bet he's glad it didn't happen now, but what is going on at this level in our club, since SC got here?

eaii I'd suggest you use the appropriate spelling to your posts before resorting to personal attacks.......it's quite not quiet.

that aside your comment regarding Collins being invloved in the 7 game losing streak is very valid.

I don't see why DD can't do a reasonable job alongside Sonko, but we still need more cover.

I am getting a bit fed up of all these loans - unless they are done with a view to permanent signings. However I honestly believe that as long as he is alongside a player who can direct him then Delaney is decent enough. I understand that he was a possible MOM at Leicester. I also believe that a lot of Town fans are
1. Too pessimistic
2. Unrealsistic
PJ is doing a reasonable job - all is still to play for this season - I reckon that JET will come good and Bowyer and Bullard will get back on form
I also think that Dury should be given a chance when we need an energetic midfielder who can tackle and defend when needed COYB !!!

Delaney was a defo candidate for MOM at Leicester. The break appears to have done him some good.

I'm not sure I really want Collins back, especially on another loan. He was part of an awful defence during our bad spell, and I would rather sign someone younger, cheaper and on a long-term basis.

As for Carson, it is worrying that our of our best youngsters is going into the last six months of their contract without signing. I remember Jewell saying he wanted big money though, so the club should not be held to ransom. Josh won't get a better club to develop him, and if he chooses to leaves that's up to him. Maybe Bradford will take him.

For a lot of people the choice between living in Suffolk compared with the dreary Midlands is an absolute no-brainer!

Mercenary footballers (or their agents) will use every argument to negotiate a better deal and 'location' would be one of them.

Collins is a decent player, but I think we could do better with someone else in his position and I reckon PJ knows that.

Remember, it took our two greatest Managers TIME to build their teams and they showed that a mixture of youth and experience can work well. Let's trust the management to achieve that.

I am a Town Season Ticket holder and I live 10 minutes from Alderley Edge.Collins clearly does not share my enthusiasm for Town.

Perhaps I could offer him a lift home after matches ?!!

I think it's got to be a case of if he would rather be somewhere else then he does'nt want to be at Portman road.He had some good games for us and scored 3 goals thanks for your help and good luck. Now who is available as a replacement but should deffinately be permanent and also I can't see Sonko playing for more than 1 more season.I think also it is far more important that we keep Andrews on a permanent deal than it is Collins.

Oldelsworthyfan. ''dreary Midlands''...?

You've clearly never been to Alderley Edge (which, for your sake alone, isn't in The Midlands). Mr and Mrs Beckham seemed to like it quite a lot.

Good luck to Collins. He's a quality player who can play at a higher level than we can currently offer.
