Jewell Hails Second Half Comeback
Jewell Hails Second Half Comeback
Saturday, 10th Dec 2011 20:25

Blues boss Paul Jewell hailed his players’ spirited second half comeback after Town’s incredible 5-3 win at Barnsley.

Jewell said: “A credit to the players. We were 2-0 down at half-time and there were shades of the second half at Burnley.

“I sat the players down at half-time and told them that we need men. There’s no easy way out of this, it’s live on telly, which shouldn’t make any difference, and now wasn’t the time for shrinking violets. We came out second half and you could see that we had a reaction.

“When you’ve been on a run like we’ve been on, it’s easy to feel sorry for yourself and think the world’s against you,” he continued.

“All you need is belief, desire and determination and we showed that in abundance in the second half. We looked lively all of a sudden, from nowhere.

“The front players got hold of the ball, the midfield players were picking up second balls, we were getting crosses into the box, everything we didn’t do in the first half.”

He says his players deserved criticism for not seeming to care during the recent 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor but is pleased with the way they have reacted in the last couple of matches: “I think anyone who was at the Burnley game can level those things at the players, because I did.

“But the reaction we got against Watford showed that the supporters will stick with the players as long as they give everything they’ve got.

“Against Burnley, I’ve told them, a few of them went missing. Today, at 2-0 down, we’d have been any price but we created opportunities and we looked like a confident team from nowhere.”

The Blues manager admitted that Keith Andrews’s first goal coming so soon after the break was a key moment: “Goals change games. I thought we should have a penalty in the first half when the lad’s hand caught the ball. They get a penalty and all three of their goals were set plays — a penalty, a freekick and a corner.

“I said to them at half-time, the next goal is vital. I said we didn’t have to score it straight away because when you’ve got a 2-0 lead and the opposition score, believe me, you can get edgy.

“We scored after 20-odd seconds of the second half and all of a sudden we were on the front foot.”

Jewell refused to single any particular player out for praise: “I think the whole team had a really good second half. We’re disappointed to have conceded three goals but at least we’ve shown a bit of balls and a bit of character in the comeback.

“We’ve let leads slip ourselves over the last few weeks and it’s nice to show our supporters who have come all this way that we've got a bit of fighting spirit. We’ve got to continue with that and get better at lots of things.”

RIGHT... for all you moaners out there, i have supported the town for over 40 years and regularly (in the eighties and nineties) travelled to away games and one year we got a little present from the club for being such good travelling fans, really hope the club think of a way of giving our tremendous supporters a little treat come the end of the season, they do us proud, not sure about the shirts off though, lol. In all those years i cant remember a better or more enjoyable comeback, Just enjoy it ffs. i know "REAL" supporters will do. I bet people like newboy, dont even go to games. TOMISAMOS, sorry mate carlos has had the odd ok game at right back this season, but yesterday was not one of them, made too many mistakes and had it not been for sonkos clown like mistakes ( at times) deflecting some of the attention away from edwards own inept display, i rate edwards as a right midfielder, and i rate sonko too... but lets all just be together on this and relish that passion, the attacking football and the result from yesterday's second half... This is what Saturdays are made of (or should be) - we have not had anywhere enough of them lately - so let's ENJOY and SAVOUR the moment.

Doesn't paper over the cracks by any means, but this was a hugely important 3 points - WELL DONE EVERYONE.

To the 'super optimist's' who will now believe 'all is well' and perfection is in place - stop the 'sniping' at others who still feel otherwise - and ENJOY JUST LIKE WE ARE - and hope for many repeats of today.

This result has made my weekend.

feed the strikers and they will score, what a difference it makes getting crosses into the box, i'd take 5-3 every game untill we've sorted out a rb and def midfielder but awesome comeback, that was better than the time we were 3-0 down with 10 mins to go years ago at barnsley under burley, it takes time to get the balance of a team right and jewel will

Wow! What a comeback! Who'd have thought it? Not me for sure...

Fascinating comments on here afterwards which are, in my opinion, a microcosm of what we see in the country at large as we face a large-size crisis of the kind we are seeing at Portman Road.

The bankers, investment brokers, hedgefund managers and corporations have very effectively ruined our country's finances for at least a generation to come. They, however, have escaped absolutely scot-free and the 'little folk' have been left to pick up the pieces and pay for it all. If they have the audacity to strike and protest other 'little folk' condemn them as negative trouble-makers and say they're being disloyal to the country.

Meanwhile, at ITFC it really isn't the 'little folk' (i.e. you and me) who've messed up our club; but those responsible continue to take HUGE pay-packets and escape scot-free. If any of the 'little folk' dare to question whether things are really as rosy as the Management suggest they are condemned as negative and not 'real fans'. They are ostracised and not made welcome if they don't stay On Message - i.e. saying all the stuff (and BUYING all the stuff!!) that the Management want them to.

Yeah, I know we ripped you all off and that you will have to work til you're nearly 70 now and that we've let off all the culprits and we're waging irrelevant and pointless wars against unseen foreign 'foes' but hey, it's Christmas soon and isn't celebrity culture a lovely diversion? Just blindly believe, keep putting your money into the corporation and keep attacking those who don't believe what we believe. You know it'll all work out in the end...

Yeah, I know we're running your club into oblivion and you've been on the worst 3 year horror story you've EVER had but hey, we came back against the mighty Barnsley and it'll all be alright in the end. Just blindly believe, keep putting your money into the corporation and keep attacking those who don't believe what we believe...

And they all lived blindly... oh, I mean - HAPPILY ever after...

Blue Army, let's beat Derby ! Congratulations to the team, Paul Jewell et al for yesterday's LIFT ! We know it wasn't perfect, but that much drive, effort and sheer guts has to be applauded. Well done ! IMHO, Andews deserves to keep the armband [ hopefully he and Collins sign of course ].
To yesterday's travelling support, good on yer'.

Hopefully the news in the paper is correct..LA Galaxy want to sign Carlos Edwards! Watched the game on Sky last nite and he is a terrible right back OK its not his preferred position but he has been playing there long enough to know what to do by now. The amount of time he was out of position was unbelievable. A new right back in January is an absolute must buy!

Bluelady: That's absolutely fine. That's what we've been trained to do nowadays isn't it? Enjoy the now, forget the past, look forward to the future and never, ever think too deeply about the ramifications and consequences of anything going on around us.

Sigh...

Great comeback but much work to do before we can consider this a real sea change.

People are right to point out that Collins and Andrews could soon be on their respective ways out of Portman Road but how many of us thought we hadn't a hope in hell of signing Jimmy.

Play the same way again next week for 90 minutes please boys!

COYBs!

I watched the game over here and could not believe my eyes in the second half. The team were brilliant going forward, but how many set plays are we going to concede from?

Barnsley must hate us. I was at Oakwell in the 90's when we were 3-0 down with 2 minutes left and we ended up scoring 3 to draw. That was an amazing comeback, but this result beats that one!

Dissboy - I'll accept defeat, agree we do need a proper RB

llewej tuo - don't really understand your problem, I'd refer you to h32 who's probably made the same point as you but in a more balanced way...

Last year against Leicester the team we played against and the weather conditions played a HUGE part in the game, let's not pretend it didn't. This result is more incredible. To be so down and out and then to pull out such a dominant display which I think could have beaten ANY team in the league that weekend was astounding. The players showed weakness in ability rather than attitude at twice but I think the first half implies that htey were just trying TOO hard, not hard enough. Once they got a goal back, they relaxed and the majority of them showed us the real quality they possess.

As for the goals. A penalty and an incredible free kick - both down to the keeper making individual positioning errors, I don't think Stockdale has made too many of these to be fair to him whilst being here and Wright is also fairly solid, these are mistakes which don't occur regularly. The corner was down to not having someone on the post, which we usually do, and also came from a corner. Otherwise, other than Sonko's mistake and clearance, they barely looked like scoring and just had a series of pot shots straight at the keeper, we actually defended reasonably and had Stockdale been having a good day, which he usually does, it could easily have been 5-1 or 5-0! Anyway, we scored FIVE. For this game, who cares about the three? During the second half we only let in one and before that the first half was a terrible, scrappy game and barely reflects the comeback or turnaround at all.

This isn't the only time the team has played well like this, anyway. How about Coventry? Or the five game winning streak? Or Bristol City on the opening day? We've shown real quality at times and if PJ can keep getting the players to believe and fight for their side as they seemed to have down for the past two games, we shall see more results like this.

As for Andrews and Collins, you can't be certain. But rather than go on about how they may or may not stay, even if they don't. We saw brilliant performances from Scotland, Chopra, Martin and Cresswell and I think Murphy looked solid in the second. Bowyer, Sonko and Stockdale may have looked bit shakey even in our comeback, yet the whole team dominated, you won't get all eleven players completely on song, it's the team that matters. If Jewell can bring in players like Andrews and Collins in the summer, if they leave he can bring in more, don't write him off that easily.

I think your attitude needs to change. Your account and everything you say will only ever look at the negatives behind Jewell's managership. And when he turns this around you'll delete this account and crawl back into the corner you came from. We're not out of the woods yet and we need to see this performance sustained. But I think you've seriously underestimated the desire and the committment shown from the whole team on Saturday. They didn't just do that for the fans, they did it for the manager. It's possible they won't manage to come out and attack like this again, but I'm prepared to be proved wrong. Are you?

good post although I interpreted the first half a little differently to your description
"the first half was a terrible, scrappy game and barely reflects the comeback or turnaround at all"
I think that terrible and scrappy accurately describes our performance (shocking defending and passing etc.) but from Barnsley's perspective they looked good controlling the midfield and the game, moving the ball around well, executing the basics properly and generally looking dangerous. For us to change that situation around so dramatically makes our second half performance even more remarkable.

tomisamos - that's a good post - there is an awful lot of ability in this squad we have - but we have AGE as well, too much of it in my opinion.

I do not rate Jewell as a Manager who is capable of taking our Club forward, as you well know, however, as I have said previously, I genuinely hope he proves me wrong.

Bring it on PJ if you're capable of doing it - I'm happy for us ALL right now after yesterdays result. Long may it continue.

Terrific Great result
Let's now start reducing our intake of goals.
Somewhere between 0 and 1 per game.
We have great potential but it's difficult to play knowing you need to score at least 3 to win.
Step forward the defensive coaches. Let's start to tie it down. No alternative if we are to challenge.
It ALL starts at the back.

TractorBreezer - to be honest I think you're right. I said at half time the difference was that they relaxed and we didn't and therefore they had converted their chances. You're right though, the game was completely changed and to be honest I don't think Barnsley even played badly in the second half, I just think we dominated them.

h32 - there is a lot of it but I think if this team start winning games, we will see younger players breaking through and securing places in the team. It'll be interesting to see how well the loaned out players have done, for example, on their return.
