Jewell Hails Second Half Comeback
Jewell Hails Second Half Comeback
Saturday, 10th Dec 2011 20:25

Blues boss Paul Jewell hailed his players’ spirited second half comeback after Town’s incredible 5-3 win at Barnsley.

Jewell said: “A credit to the players. We were 2-0 down at half-time and there were shades of the second half at Burnley.

“I sat the players down at half-time and told them that we need men. There’s no easy way out of this, it’s live on telly, which shouldn’t make any difference, and now wasn’t the time for shrinking violets. We came out second half and you could see that we had a reaction.

“When you’ve been on a run like we’ve been on, it’s easy to feel sorry for yourself and think the world’s against you,” he continued.

“All you need is belief, desire and determination and we showed that in abundance in the second half. We looked lively all of a sudden, from nowhere.

“The front players got hold of the ball, the midfield players were picking up second balls, we were getting crosses into the box, everything we didn’t do in the first half.”

He says his players deserved criticism for not seeming to care during the recent 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor but is pleased with the way they have reacted in the last couple of matches: “I think anyone who was at the Burnley game can level those things at the players, because I did.

“But the reaction we got against Watford showed that the supporters will stick with the players as long as they give everything they’ve got.

“Against Burnley, I’ve told them, a few of them went missing. Today, at 2-0 down, we’d have been any price but we created opportunities and we looked like a confident team from nowhere.”

The Blues manager admitted that Keith Andrews’s first goal coming so soon after the break was a key moment: “Goals change games. I thought we should have a penalty in the first half when the lad’s hand caught the ball. They get a penalty and all three of their goals were set plays — a penalty, a freekick and a corner.

“I said to them at half-time, the next goal is vital. I said we didn’t have to score it straight away because when you’ve got a 2-0 lead and the opposition score, believe me, you can get edgy.

“We scored after 20-odd seconds of the second half and all of a sudden we were on the front foot.”

Jewell refused to single any particular player out for praise: “I think the whole team had a really good second half. We’re disappointed to have conceded three goals but at least we’ve shown a bit of balls and a bit of character in the comeback.

“We’ve let leads slip ourselves over the last few weeks and it’s nice to show our supporters who have come all this way that we've got a bit of fighting spirit. We’ve got to continue with that and get better at lots of things.”

Nice one blue boys - that took some balls when 2-0 at half time.

Marvellous! It is wonderful to win after such a run and I hope that we can build on it and start climbing the table.
However, the fly in the ointment is that we still conceded three goals. If we concede goals like this then realistically it is division 1 for us.

That must have been some peptalk Paul! Well done Paul and the lads inspired by Andrews start to the second half.
Still much to work on as evidenced by the first half such as pass completion e.g. Bowyer very hurried passing and Cresswell two "controlled" passes straight into touch and poor defending...Edwards needs to be taught how to defend a cross...at least jump with the player and make your presence known instead of allowing a free header.
Fortunately today the positives ultimately outweighed the negatives and what a marvellous second half for all town supporters with Andrews and Scotland shining. Special mention for the band of supporters who were actually there...including some without shirts...barmy army!
Now let's beat Derby.

So proud to be Ipswich!

What a performance (second half!)

I hope Andrews shares those bubbles with Scotland, he was superb, so much strength and actually held onto the ball and deserved his goal!

So good to see Chopra score a proper strikers goal as I like to call it, top class finish that was and that's what we bought him for.

Important also I think that it was a good hiding in the end, that will give everyone so much confidence going into the Derby game, and they're not doing great themselves so its a really good chance to push on and get out of this hole we're in.

Obviously all is not forgiven but let's enjoy this eh boys and give Jewell some credit for what was obviously an incredible half time team talk!

COYB.

How did Sonko's howler not go in by the way?

It's not good for the blood pressure being an Ipswich Town fan!
2-0 down at half time away at Barnsley in front of the nation on Sky destined to loose our 8th in a row and then POW! 20 secs in to the second half we score and we end up winning 5-3! How the heck did that happen!
Superb! C'mon you blue boys!

Some jewell outers are changing their tune now after one win..
But I do not doubt our managers ability.
I just think we need some real football people running the club.

What a second half, either the half tome oranges were spiked or PJ found an old Churchill speach somewhere.
The first half was one of the worst displays I've seen since the 0-9 Man Utd season, they couldnt pass, tackle or hold on to the ball, and we were lucky to only be 2-0 down.
Then the second half..BANG, they actually looked like pro footballers.
Now not to put a dampner on todays surprising second half performance, lets keep our feet on the ground, as all of us town fans know, disapointment is always around the corner.
Lets hope the players have realised what talent they have when they play with aggresion, passion and pride, and we can celebrate more results like today.
COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scotland and Cresswell stood out today, and it was great to see Chopra scoring, should boost his confidence.
I think Andrews (in the second half) got the bit between his teeth and drove the midfield, hopefully he will stay and hang on to the Captains armband.

yep great win lads!! still think the way we played second half we'll get 'picked off' on the counter by better teams, but that match will install some confidence.
Plus points, Cresswell still showing great maturity and great game by Scotland.
Minus points: Get Edwards out of the defense, still think our defence and midfield aren't playing as a unit.

I'd like to see some others eating some humble pie! Must've killed some on here to see us do so well coming from behind, and hopefully made some of their wallets a bit lighter too!!

Well hats off to the manager and players for pulling themselves together after half time. After 7 games on the bounce and 2 down again, it would have been easy to have thrown in the towel once more.

They didn't. And fair play to them, maybe they do want to play for the shirt after all. It's too early to be talking about the start of a season-changing run to the playoffs, and we are set to lose 2 of those players very soon, but for now we have got that monkey off our back and the supporters should be happy enough about that.

Fingers crossed we can build on this...

Incredible second half rally. Well done to the team and in particular Scotland who always looked threatening when he dropped deep.If he is given this role by PJ he is going to be a threat every game.Andrews great goals and we need to keep him..please.Defence still needs work and apologies for being critical but we do need a right back, and probably a hard man in midfield in front of the back 4.
I have always been critical of PJ but tonight i would like to congratulate him.Under immense pressure his half time talk obviously worked and he and the team deserve this win. Please please lets hope we can keep this going.
Finally massive respect to the blues fans who made the trip and supported the team . COYB.

Garv;I have been very negative of late and addmitted so earlier in the week, now all I can say is one half of football does not make a season but it does do 2 things. 1, what happened or what was said at half time that had'nt happened or had been said in the last 7 matches and that is so bemusing.2, Gives everybody hope and the players confidence to biuld on now for a 7 match winning streak. If he keeps the armband i'm sure Andrews will stay, not sure about Collins but he is playing (and scoring) for us where he might not for another team.We lose Stockdale at the end of the season and i think a serious effort must be made to sign Loach from Watford

Everything was unbelievable- our first half, our second half, Andrews goals, Edwards defending, How we did not have Bowyer or Murphy or Stockdale sent off etc etc .
Whether it was Jewells half time chat or just the confidence from the first goal we must build on this. On paper we have some of the best players in the division but also we have worst defence in the league and are about to lose Collins.
A crucial time.

This time last year we beat Leicester in a similarly bizarre game and 2 weeks later the manager was gone.
Please Town go on a good run -winning is such a good feeling
