Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Saturday, 29th Oct 2011 17:56

Boss Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s susceptibility on the counter-attack after losing 4-1 at Millwall. The Blues manager hit out at some of his players for failing to do their jobs.

A disappointed Jewell said: “The way we conceded the goals was hugely disappointing. I think when we got back to 2-1 I think expected to go on and maybe get something out of the game, but we’re susceptible to the counter-attack and that was shown up today."

Town’s vulnerability to counter-attacks goes back to last season, although Jewell says that that's ancient history, believing that some of his current players simply aren’t doing what they’re told: “Last season’s well and truly gone, I’m talking about this season and I think we all know we’re susceptible to the counter-attack, there’s no denying that.

“The reason for that is that too many people want to do their own thing. We’ve got a team and we’ve got to try and get the best out of them and there are too many people who want to try and do their own thing at the moment, and that’s why we’re getting caught out.”

The Blues boss cited Millwall’s second goal as an example of when players weren’t doing what they were supposed to: “When we’re attacking, they don’t pick up. Thinking about the second Millwall goal, the ball drops to Jay Simpson, there’s three of us round him and no one’s gone on the front foot. We’ve backed off and we’ve backed off. For some reason we’re backing off.”

Jewell admits that the performance was nowhere near those in the recent spell of better form: “In that run we had we took the game to the opposition, today we were nowhere near.”

Town’s cause wasn’t helped by two first half injuries but the Blues manager refused to blame the changes of personnel: “Lee Bowyer’s nicked his hamstring and the same with Sonko. It didn’t help us but we won’t be using that as an excuse.

“At 2-1, you’re thinking that we might have ridden the storm and we might come back, but we didn’t.”

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was a very good game. To get back to back wins against Leicester away and Ipswich at home is big for us.”

Wakey Wakey Mr Jewell - us fans all know nothing - yet we all seem to be ALL singing from the same hymn sheet - change the system and bring back some width please - the diamond system has been sussed - don't remain static and be one step up on the next opponents! (hope to see Lee Martin and/or Josh Carson in the team aginst Doncaster)

Are sidelined players not match fit due to lack of reserve game fixtures perhaps? I find it bizarre that players seem to disappear without a trace and I can only think there are fitness problems at the club. If PJ doesn't rate Hyam, why did he keep him? How can Carson fall from grace so spectacularly - isn't the manager supposed to get the best from him? I don't see many games (unfortunately) but O'Connor always did well in the games I have seen. Colin Healy became a regular at the end of last season - what happened to him over the break? He has been replaced by players even older than he is. Priskin needs to be given another chance? Perhaps Martin can be forgiven now? Peters is not a bad player is he? Murphy has been brought in and is now beginning to 'vanish'. If a player isn't match fit, he cannot be returned to the starting line up, but if he's not playing regularly, he won't be fit.

Sorry PJ but if players today aren't doing the job hey've been told to do then drop them and put in someone who can. Too many excuses are trotted out after defeats.
Only bright part of the day was Connor's goal for Sunderland!!!

Usual stuff from Jewell.. blaming everyone but himself. We'll do no good while he's here, and the bloke who appointed him has a record of constant failure ever since he's been our CEO.Let's face facts and get rid of two for the price of one.. SC is turning our club into a laughing stock.

imo the lack of reserve team games hasnt helped any of our younger players & fringe players. we need to go back to basics with 4-4-2 with two speedy wingers getting in quality crosses for our strikers. put the opposition on the back foot rather than the other way around with our stagnant midfield my team for donny if fit would be stockdsle wabra collins sonko creswell edwards bullard andrews o connor scotland chopra. subs alb lavery iggi bowyer carson. youth speed &experience

Hello all

In terms of reserve team footy, is a purely monetry that they do not have a champioship reserve league? They can play the same day as the 1st team and just have the same fixtures which mirror the league proper. Would be competitive and surely not that difficult to put together. If Southwold Town can manage to run two teams in two leagues, how come major football clubs cannot.

Anyway enough of that rant, I agree with Keaneish we have to look at getting Martin back in that side and Wabara on the right, mid or right back. I would get Carson on the bench and maybe use him as a sub for whoever is top of the Diamond.

Since the international break we have been really poor. Andrews, and Collins two of our better performers have really lost form since the break. We have no pace in the team and is becomming a big problem going forward and defending. Teams are hitting us on break and we don't have the speed to match them. Also in attack we need width to get away from the middle of park and make the pitch bigger. Our formation has been sussed out and now our full backs are being pinned back we have no outlet.
Jewell has said he wamts to play 442 so why not? We need to look to the lower leagues for talent which we did with only cresswell and look at him. I am fed up of signing all these 30+ players I want some potential and excitment in the team it is ok to have expererience in your team but need good blend.I would like us to go for these players. Hall and Ferdinand from Southend and Jordan Rhodes. We need pace an youth PJ sort it out B4 our season peaters out again.

When a team is there to be taken by counter attacks the main reason for that is lack of pace. When you have 30 somethings mostly in your team that's what happens.

Based on current injuries and form i'd like to see us play a 4-4-2 against Donnie and use this side. This is an exciting side full of goals, width, pace and experience. The most exciting element of it though and what i'd be happy to pay money to see would be the partnership of Cresswell and O'Connor on the left. Both young, passionate scowsers who can both get forward and both defend well.

Stockdale
Edwards Ingy Collins Cresswell
Martin/Carson Bullard Andrews O'Connor
Chopra Scotland

Bench: Lee-Barrett, Ainsley, Leadbitter, Carson/Martin and one of Priskin/JET/Murphy

For me Ainsley would get the nod over Wabara as he can play at full back or central defence. Sonko, Delaney and Bowyer are all out injured.

3 points is 3 points. We don't lose extra because we got thrashed. People who weren't getting carried away when we were winning don't you dare suddenly get carried away by three poor performances and two losses!

Ipswich Town have to be the most inconsistent team in this devilish league. We were under Magilton, we were under Keane and we have been under Jewell. I genuinely think its in the blood.

I've only briefly seen highlights so can't comment too much on the game (couldn't have been good mind), but Bullard, apart from his wonder goal I think was involved in atleast two of their goals and one incident was simply laughable - losing the ball for being slow and unaware of players around him. What must opposition fans think when they see him playing like this? 'Isn't this bloke meant to be the jewell in the crown, Ipswich saviour, he's awful!' I've thought that for a while because he DOES have bad games and I think, although we all love to love him and turn a blind eye when he does anything bad and laugh we have to start to look at him when results like yesterday happen. Leadbitter or Bowyer would get absolutely slaughtered if they did some of the things Bullard does. At the same time it looked a cracking goal. Time for a rest? Let him change a game if need be like he did against Leeds.

How did Chopra look by the way anyone? I'd like to have thought that despite his problems he would still be able to stick the ball in the net (pundits often say once you cross the white line everything else gets forgotten.

What's happened to Scotland? He needs to be getting into shooting positions like at Cardiff because he can almost rip the net sometimes.

Carson and Martin against Donny please, Bowyer and Andrews (what's happened to him btw) in the centre. As much as I'd like to see it O'connor play it won't happen. Best part of a year without a first team appearance means he would be nowhere the standard nor fitness level required. If he plays next week and gets MOTM I'll hold my hands up.

People can say players lose form and have bad games, which is fair enough, but it just seems that it is happening to almost all our players at once!

Im as disappointed in the signing of Tamas Priskin as anyone but he must be given an opportunity. Some neat touches and knock downs might be just what we're missing upfront. We won't know until we try.

I'm not going to sprout the rubbish that some do on here but Jewell needs a quick fix. It seems that EVERYONE is in agreement that we need to add some pace to the side so let's make it happen Paul!

The manager imo has a ridiculously difficult task in getting this club into the Premier League or even into the play offs . I can oh so easily picture the league table at the end of the season with our once proud club sitting in the familiar position of 11th/12th/13th. But hey we should have be used to it. Even to lose in the play offs would give us something to build on next season, at the moment we are building on midtable.

Just some thoughts popping into my head that I think are relevant to yesterdays result.

Who'd be a town fan?

What really makes me laugh is the fact that Jewell's critics never show when we've had a good result, and when we get a poor one they all come crawling out from their shells in their numbers and call out Jewell's supporters, saying "where are you now" and "they will all talk about our good results".

Ironic, isn't it?

Too be honest three poor games in a row might just be unlucky, if we have another against second from bottom of the table doncaster then we can start moaning but I feel its a bit early in the season to be criticising the management especially when he has brought in more talent than kean did in his two season with town, in a summer and saved us from relegation last year!. Although we lack pace and motivation to win I believe in the players and jewell. I feel we can still get that glorious winning feeling back against Donny at the weekend and nobody will moan we will all be praising jewell and saying were back on track for the playoffs, but he seriously does need to play some younger players such as carson or martin because they have more energy than the likes of bullard or keith andrews and maybe they can give us some much needed width to our side as well. I still believe Keans players are still costing us the points I don't know how many times I heard kennedy not doing his job properly yesterday and edwards doesn't seem to use his pace at all. All in all we have all been through this before being town fans we know we are an unconsistant side but this season we have some true talent in the squad we just need to be patient and i know it's hard but we do our time will come boys lets stick with them and bring on Donny at the weekend!!! COYB!

Whilst I am not in the 'doom and gloom' camp that some are on here I am concerned that the blend of youth , our club has always pushed - does not seem to be there !!!
We have youth - talented and pacy sitting out each week and with Cresswell out and some of the Midfielders looking wiery it was an ideal time to present them to the party
If we had lost to Millwall playing the 'wide boys' and kids of course many on here would have bemoaning the fact he did stick with the diamond !! but I think rational fans would have encouraged putting some of the younguns out - How many teams have really seen Carson , Whight or O Connor play -
We have seen the past two weeks what decent and young wide men can do

Anyway I am still optimistic we will progress more than regress
keep the belief

You can all moan now but if we beat Doncaster 5-0 with the same squad on Saturday there'll be nothing but praise for the whole team on here.
