Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Saturday, 29th Oct 2011 17:56

Boss Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s susceptibility on the counter-attack after losing 4-1 at Millwall. The Blues manager hit out at some of his players for failing to do their jobs.

A disappointed Jewell said: “The way we conceded the goals was hugely disappointing. I think when we got back to 2-1 I think expected to go on and maybe get something out of the game, but we’re susceptible to the counter-attack and that was shown up today."

Town’s vulnerability to counter-attacks goes back to last season, although Jewell says that that's ancient history, believing that some of his current players simply aren’t doing what they’re told: “Last season’s well and truly gone, I’m talking about this season and I think we all know we’re susceptible to the counter-attack, there’s no denying that.

“The reason for that is that too many people want to do their own thing. We’ve got a team and we’ve got to try and get the best out of them and there are too many people who want to try and do their own thing at the moment, and that’s why we’re getting caught out.”

The Blues boss cited Millwall’s second goal as an example of when players weren’t doing what they were supposed to: “When we’re attacking, they don’t pick up. Thinking about the second Millwall goal, the ball drops to Jay Simpson, there’s three of us round him and no one’s gone on the front foot. We’ve backed off and we’ve backed off. For some reason we’re backing off.”

Jewell admits that the performance was nowhere near those in the recent spell of better form: “In that run we had we took the game to the opposition, today we were nowhere near.”

Town’s cause wasn’t helped by two first half injuries but the Blues manager refused to blame the changes of personnel: “Lee Bowyer’s nicked his hamstring and the same with Sonko. It didn’t help us but we won’t be using that as an excuse.

“At 2-1, you’re thinking that we might have ridden the storm and we might come back, but we didn’t.”

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was a very good game. To get back to back wins against Leicester away and Ipswich at home is big for us.”

A shocker to a team that will be fighting relegation/around the bottom 5/6. Having a think to the 5 games I seen and the commentary from the others we would be near rock bottom if not for Stockdale.

Pace, width, guile, teamwork - strange that slot of fans can see this but not the manager!

PJ/ME I have paid for the family to go to the Donny game but that is the last £70 from me until we get some pace, width and true blue football back.

It's now 2.5 years since Jim left and we are no better. I haven't lost faith PJ but you need to learn fast. Collins goes back in 5 weeks and Stockdale could get called back at any mo - without any changes and those two gone we will be scrapping to get 50 points.

Oh dear - the PJ lovers will point to a run of 6 decent results. Of course, they will fail to accept many abysmal showings under PJ. Just 9 months in and:

Millwall 4 Town 1
Peterboro 7 Town 1
Town 2 Southampton 5
Town 1 Norwich 5
Swansea 4 Town 1
Leicester 4 Town 2
Town 0 Watford 3
Town 1 Reading 3
Town 1 Northampton 2

Many other shocking performances to add to this list - particularly when playing boring negative football. several poor signings as well. Teams have now worked out this diamond - PJ has been unable to react and implement a Plan B. Anyone can see we are lacking pace and have a number of injury prone signings. This is PJ's team. So no excuse this is NOWHERE near good enough. PJ must act now.

Very poor. Rubbish in fact!

Taxi for Mr. Jewell. That's 9 months now since he took charge of his first game, also at Millwall, and let's not beat around the bush, we're going backwards. Keane was poor, but under that numpty's guidance we got to a Cup semi-final (with some help from the caretaker) and never looked like conceeding 7 to P'boro, 5 to Soton and 4 to Millwall, a team that has only won once at home all season.

I had the misfortune to go to last week's game against Palace and today's. Both were dire. Can I have my £50 back please. Who should I send my invoice to Mr Evans? We've had 4 serious efforts in those 2 games. That's 1 every 45 minutes. That's £12.50 per shot. That's appalling entertainment. Call me a fair weather friend but frankly I'm sick of this dross. I won't be giving any more money to that bunch of slow, over-the-hill half-wits for the rest of 2011. I've decided if I need I a football fix I'll get it from my local non-league team, Dulwich Hamlet, who are infinitely better value for money than that digraceful offering provided by Jewell over the previous 3 games.

It's pathetic that he is so shallow that he can't admit the previous regimes cultivated some talent. Hyam, Carson, O'Connor, Peters, Murray, Healy, Priskin. They weren't world beaters but they never disgraced the shirt the way the current crop are doing. PJ, I'm sorry mate, but time to face the music, as the popular music hall favourite goes, "you don't know what you're doing". Pace, vision, ideas, creativity. This is what good teams are made of, as the last two weeks have showed. Who has that in the current Ipswich team. Today, Wabara was ok, and Thomas added something when he came on. The rest of you, please, show some dignity and respect and sacrifice your wages this week to charity for that dismal performance. Enough is enough.

What a contrast from my last away game at West Ham. No quality, no precision passing, no understanding on positional play at the back...and no trains to get us to and from the ground...Jewell must be scratching his head at what on earth has happened to basically the same line up (Creswell instead of Kennedy the main difference) The only thing consistant was the amazing ITFC support.

I suppose some of you will soon want Jewell out !
In 9 months he has moved the club forward after the debacle of Keane - we will still reach the play-offs.

In PJ I trust - COYB !

On the nail PIP50.
PJ saying this week how we have improved since he took the reigns in this fixture last season. Well we were beaten 2-1 in that to a Millwall riding high yet today it was 4-1 to a Millwall in the bottom six.
Biggest disappointment was that we didnt look like we wanted it. First goal summed it up really brilliant save by DS, they won the follow up, another great block by DS, they won the follow up and its 1-0. We are so slow to react to loose balls in the box and we have no pace, no width.
When are we going to use the pacy wide men, Carson, Martin, O'Connor???
Ellington on the bench is NOT the answer Mr J.
Sort it out...starting to lose patience as well as my hard earned following this pitiful bunch.

Yes PJ is good at talking, players are good at telling us what they are going to do ie to play better then the last game, when are they going to get it right, better if they keep their mouth shut, and show us on the field, thats what we pay our money for not this rubbish.

I want to make it clear that I don't want Jewell out, simply because it's not the answer. Since Jim left, we've wanted a quick fix. Jewell has been here 9 months? Promotion isn't won in one game, it's won over a season. Still lots of time left.

That said, I'll reiterate my earlier comment and others: We need pace and width and it is here at the club. Use it, Mr Jewell, please.

At last there is a ground swell to get some pace in the team. I have been banging on about this for the duration of 3 managers now but still no action to remedy the problem. Today Simpson and Feeney tore our ageing players apart and we looked vulnerable every time they came at us. I don't agree Millwall were a poor team not fantastic but a difficult proposition at home. They do have a poor looking defence but we rarely troubled them Bullards goal apart. Difficult to believe that the absence of Cresswell can make so much difference and the change of formation did not work. Sonko should never have played and was poor whilst on the field and sorry but Kennedy cannot play left back in this league. Oh for a Henderson in our team a real target man who can win balls in the air, for at the moment we have not one striker who can do that or dare I say JET - on second thoughts perhaps not although he did better than some today when he came on. What a difference a fortnight makes !!!

My God! are Ipswich the most inconsistant team in the Championship? ok we had that nice little 6 game run undefeated but now we'll probably go 6 games without a win! No wonder we never get near the play-offs, under Keane it was a case of a lot of draws and not many wins or losses but now a case of less draws and more wins and losses. The big question is are we progressing? and personally I would say fractionally but not where we want to be (and who says we have a 2/3 year plan to get promoted - that's not good enough, we were saying that a few years back). With the experience we have in the team we should not be getting beat by Millwall but it wasn't rocket science that ther's not alot of pace in this team, we would have and have been found out and there are more teams in the not to near distant future who will run us off the pitch or beat us tactically! - overall got to do better!

Lee martin is not in the team because despite his pace he is one of the most average players we have had in recent seasons. If he worked harder in training and had a football brain he would play every week. He is a complete let down. Forget the manager its about time these players stood up and started taking more responsibility. That said a win against doncaster and the season will be back on track

I'm a big fan of Jewell's but I don't think he's worked-out his best available team yet.
I, like many others, was really disappointed when the 4 "diamond" midfielders were announced at the Coventry (home) game, however we went on to have a successful run with it. The key to it's success was the compact midfield and the attacking fullbacks. I went to West Ham and their narrowed pitch really suited that formation, but against teams with width and pace we come undone, severely.

Personally, I would like to see the following team at home to Doncaster:

Stockdale
Edwards Sonko (or Ingy) Collins Cresswell
Carson Andrews Bullard Martin
Scotland Chopra

Subs:
ALB
Delaney
Leadbitter
JET
Ellington (or Murphy)

The diamond systems did us well for a few games, but other teams saw us for what we were worth and we have not changed to counter this. We have been snuffed out by other teams and we have no answer. I was so disappointed today to see the bench. No player to change things! We must be the easiest team to plan against. We need a wide player, not 4 similar players in the midfield. The only good thing is that i predicted a lose today having witnessed the last two games so at least i have moved up the "prediction league"!!! not that is much consolation.

Absolute garbage since jewell took over apart from 6-0 win over doncaster to lose so heavily so often 4-1 to swansea 5-1 to norwich 5-2 to southampton 7-1 to peterborough 4-1 to millwall even under keano we never lost so heavily so often considering the experience in the team this surely cannot continue maybe another change is due nothing more than thrashing donnie next saturday will be good enough as they now have 7 days off

Have to disagree EvansBlue. Although Martin's tracking back isn't that great he's one of the few players we have who can carry the ball and attack players at a bit of pace so he gets a vote to start for me as does O'connor or Carson in the next game.

Another point of note whic has to be addressed is Jimmy playing the holding role in midfield. Leadbitter can do this roll if we continue with the diamond. Jimmy is far more effective getting further up the pitch as he showed on loan last season and again today. Leadbitter has offered little apart from a bit of hassle so he can sit in front of the back 2 and pick the ball up to play out of defence.

Still an advocate of Paul Jewell. Hopefully all my points are constructive unlike some, but we must change a few fundamental things ahead of the Donnie game.

totally agree with most of all aforementioned comments. would like to see youth on the 16 for Doncaster match. Carson would be a big plus as he always looks lively and is known to score. His international duties have been headlined and he captained his country during the european championships at under 19 level, scoring in one of the games and receiving player of the match in two of the games, does this not lean, to at least a chance, to show his capabilities on the pitch for Saturdays match against Doncaster?
