Jewell: No Signings Before Blackpool Trip
Jewell: No Signings Before Blackpool Trip
Thursday, 8th Sep 2011 09:44

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’s not expecting to add any loan players to his squad before Saturday’s trip to Blackpool. Football League clubs are able to bring in loanees for up to 93 days from today.

Jewell said: “I don’t think [there’ll be any moves in or out before the weekend]. Like any time we’re making enquiries, trying to improve our squad. Things are ongoing.”

Last week the Blues manager said he had three targets in his sights, one almost certainly Stoke’s Danny Collins, and he says there may be progress now that players have returned from the international break: “There has been movement, whether that’s been positive movement or negative movement I’m not quite sure at the moment.

“Players have been away on international duty and are due back today and tomorrow. The Premier League squads have been announced, so players who might have thought they were going to be in the 25 and aren’t might have a different view.

“If I was a Premier League player, until I actually knew that I couldn’t play for my team until December I’d maybe still have hopes of playing in the Premier League, so perhaps things are a little different now.”

Jewell says he’ll continue to look for new additions despite already adding 11 signings to his squad this summer: “We’ve got an awful lot of new players and things can take time, but I think that if we can try and improve certain areas we will try and do that.

“There’s always a bit of trading that goes on in football. I’m not under any pressure to get rid of anyone. We have got a lot of bodies at the moment but we’re still trying to improve the squad.”

Jewell says that Kaiserslautern’s Czech U21 international holding midfielder Jiří Bílek and Costa Rican international central defender Francisco Calvo have not been offered contracts after their recent trials.

Watch Francisco Salvo end up in the Scottish prem and be worth £12 million in 3 years time!

We don't need any more signings apart from a goalie. This team needs to pick up points and when gelled it should do the business.

So Sonko is a doubt for Saturday and there will be no new Centre Back signing either before the Blackpool game, let's hope that Kevin Phillips is not on top form otherwise our back row could be struggling ! please not another Peterborough scoreline, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Need to get another CB and RB in quickly. I'm sure Jewell must have enough contacts to get John Flanagan from Liverpool on loan.

Even if Sonko isnt fit it means we will start with the back four of Edwards,Delaney ,Ivan and Cresswell who were excellent against Bristol City of a lively attack of Maynard and Stead .Dont underestimate the influence of Ivan alongside Delaney and Edwards ,a very good calming player

Hmmm....... so Delaney and Edwards will start on saturday.
Hope the RB and CB come in sooner rather than later, especially the RB.
Wonder what the Leadbitter situation is....

No surprise, it was a Summer of 'we hope to have two in by the end of the first week' - 'we expect two signings by Friday' - every time we failed to deliver. Now, after PJ said he wanted 'three' by the close of the window - he secured none - we then here we are after loans (bad idea IMO) - and what a surprise yet more failure from Clegg/Jewell. Must do better.

jas0999, really thought youd stopped the negative posting, but its twice now youve posted about pj saying he wanted 3 in by the close of the transfer window & failed. get your facts right please. what he said was he wanted 3 in by end of the window or once the loan window opens, so no, he hasnt failed at all/ in fact, even if we dont sign anyone, how can you say he & clegg have failed when theyve signed 11 players since last season. we havent got a divine right that every player we wants will sign for us, especially in loan window, as players more likely to sign for teams closer to them when it only a short term loan, so get real. im sure pj will do all he can to get the players in he wants, but if not then it wont be because hes failed, just that the players chose elsewhere which is their right to do so.

If Delaney, Ingimarrson and Sonko are all fit to play, I would play all three at Blackpool. I would put Sonko in at right back instead of Carlos. Blackpool will be a far stiffer test than Bristol City.

Those three lads would give us additional presence both in attacking and defending set pieces. Don't think I would play Sonko at right back for more than a game or two though.

According to other members of the squad, there was complete disbelief that Francisco Calvo wasn't signed up. The lad played faultlessly, was quick and energetic and had creativity which is an unusual gift in a central defender. In his practice matches he outshone all the other defenders so I can only imagine it was something to do with his training or attitude.
See that he's now going to go on-trail with an unnamed Premiership side. Says it all really. He'll be in a Villa Shirt by the end of the week and will be a top defender for years to come.
Don't understand PJ's decision here. I don't think anyone else understands the decision either. Did he ask for a ridiculous contract or something?
