Carling Cup Quarter-Final Date Set
Carling Cup Quarter-Final Date Set
Wednesday, 3rd Nov 2010 15:14

Town’s home Carling Cup quarter-final against West Bromwich Albion will be played on Wednesday 1st December (KO 7.45pm). The Blues play Norwich City at Carrow Road in the season’s first East Anglian derby on the previous Sunday (KO 1.15pm, BBC), hence the switch away from Town’s usual Tuesday night scheduling.

Over the weekend manager Roy Keane said that he’ll be concentrating on his side’s league form until nearer the date of the fixture: “We’re pleased with the home tie, of course we are. West Brom are a very, very good team and sent some of their squad players to Leicester and won 4-1 [in the last round].

“They turned us over comfortably last year and they are a lot, lot stronger than they were then. But that’s four or five weeks away, that’s a long, long time in football and I’m sure a lot will happen between now and then.”

The sides last met in the competition in the 1969/70 season at the third round stage with the tie going to a replay. The first game at Portman Road ended 1-1, Charlie Woods scoring for the Blues and Colin Suggett, Town's chief scout during the George Burley era, netting for the Baggies.

In the replay at the Hawthorns, the home side won 2-0 with Bobby Hope and Jeff Astle scoring the goals.

Last season in the Championship, as Albion marched into the Premier League, Town were defeated 2-0 at the Hawthorns with Youssuf Mulumbu and Robert Koren on the scoresheet.

At Portman Road, the teams drew 1-1, Grant Leadbitter netting a penalty and Chris Brunt grabbing an equaliser in the final minute.

Overall, Town have won 32 games between the sides (30 in the league), West Brom 21 (20) with 16 (14) ending in draws.

Roberto Di Matteo's men currently sit sixth in the Premier League having made an excellent start to the season.

Hmmm whats more appealing to the general public.. Ipswich v WBA or the Brum derby or seeing Man Utd/Arsenal?? Tricky one!!

Yes, Keano sorted out Man Utd when he was at Sunderland. I think it was 8-0 aggregate to Man Utd after 2 games.

Irrelevant anyway, West Brom are too strong for us.......

TV companies say to themselves: "Hmm, who are the lowest two teams left in the tournament? Ah thats right, Wigan and Ipswich. Definitely wont be showing them on TV then."

So predictable and boring, it makes me sick.

hmmm use your brains guys cmon.. Ipswich vs West Brom may be a half decent cup tie, but man utd has a far larger fan base which will bring in more viewers, plus the fact that world class players may be playing. To be honest i couldnt care less if we were on tv or not, ill be at the game cheering the lads on, which is more than what i can say for some town 'fans' who sit at home waiting for ipswich to lose just to post a load of hate mail to roy keane on here. coyb!

martus maybe thats how we used to play in the 80's, but even then i dont think we played the same quick football as arsenal do now. Times have changed, If you honestly think we've lost before we've even kicked off against them, its pointless you even being a town fan.

Stop whinging that it won't be on Sky and get down to Portman Road and support your team for crying out load! You bunch of fair-weather lilly-livered pansies! Demonstrate that Suffolk and the town of Ipswich deserves a decent football team like the one we had in the late 70s/early 80s. Cos lately, to coin a phrase, "our support is f***ing sh*t".

I can't deny that West Brom are a lot stronger than they were last year, but how can Keane say they turned us over comfortably then? I seem to remember they grabbed an equaliser in injury time in the match at Portman Road, although we did ride our luck a bit up until then.

Anyway, we'll have our tails up after carrying out a budgie bashing on the Sunday, so who knows what will happen. COYB!
