Sheffield Wednesday Watching Pablo
Sheffield Wednesday Watching Pablo
Wednesday, 27th Jan 2010 22:12

TWTD has learned that Sheffield Wednesday are keeping a close eye on Town striker Pablo Couñago. The Owls were represented at Tuesday’s home game against West Brom with the Spanish striker the subject of their interest.

Wednesday recently appointed former Blues keeper-coach Andy Rhodes to their backroom staff, a man who will know Couñago well from his time working at Portman Road.

The 30-year-old, who is contracted to Town until 2011, has been in and out of Roy Keane’s side this season, making eight starts and nine sub appearances and scoring three goals.

In the summer, the Blues accepted an offer from Swansea for Couñago but the ex-Malaga and Celta Vigo man couldn’t agree personal terms with the Welsh club and he remained at Town.

Meanwhile, Burnley have signed central defender Leon Cort from Stoke for £1.5 million. The ex-Southend man was linked with the Blues and a number of other clubs earlier today.

agree with naa, I thought his hold up play was excellent as usual Tues night and he did chase the ball and hurried defenders, it was Priskin and Edwards that didn't!

Pablo and stead look like forming a good partnership and should be given a chance with walters on the right and peters at LB

stead and pabs have played together this season aswell as last season and still not formed a decent partnership, stead and priskin should be given a chance priskin is not an off the bench impact player

Excellent news. Pablo should never have been brought back to the club as he really is not as good as people make out on this website. Our standards have really shrunk over the past few years with regards to the quality of our players. What people see in this sulky Spaniard I will never know and ducking for cover the same can be said for Alex Bruce. What a poor defender he is!!! Loads of effort and courage but not a Championship player. At best League 1.

never liked pablo seems to like the money more than the football, even through priskin has not set the place a light i would prefer to keep him as he is younger and he did ok for watford, needs a bit more time!

lazy pablo, cheerio. not a legend like a lot of people say, just a journeyman striker who can't score goals.

Shouldn't let him go unless we can replace him, as nobody seems to want to come here since Keane arrived (well worth having anyway) keep Pabs Please.

everyone on here who wants Pablo out, i bet your were singing his name at the end of the coventry game!!! he doesnt score as many as he should, but we do not have anyone in the squad who can hold up the ball like he can, as for tuesday night what wouldve been the point of him chasing the defenders?? he wouldve been chasing shadows as WBA passed it away from our strikers with ease!! im suprised that some of you on here question his desire and that he "only plays for the money" he's always looked like a player who wants to play for us so questioning his commitment is very harsh

Some of the comments on here are utterly ridiculous. surco72 - since Pablo won us the game at Coventry and should be classed as the messiah, does that mean that because he missed the guilt edge chance a few games before you think he is the devil and never play for us again? I think not. You can't have both extremes.
Technically he is one of the most talented players at our club, but he is also one of the laziest. Why do you think he has never commanded a nominal transfer fee? Clubs have cottoned on.
The constant refusal by a lot of fans to recognize the fact that Pablo is lazy, inconsistent and misses an awful lot of his chances infuriates me. Doesn't anyone remember how well he played in the lead up to getting his contract extension? After that he fell away again.
I would rather have a team made up of grafters than flair players who go missing in games. Take Marcus Bent for example. Fantastic talent but lazy attitude.
Stern John has received a lot of stick, but arguably we have performed better since he has joined us. He seems to bring out things in our players (despite not scoring a hatful of goals).

Whilst most of us seem to think that it would be good to get another, hopefully prolific, striker in that's easier said than done as every club out there wants a 20 goals a season player up front. It's unlikely that we can find somebody with the desired quality who is available at a transfer fee/wages we can afford and who can be persuaded to join us in our current position so we may have to wait until the summer. When/if we can get a new striker to try & balance the wage bill & squad size it's likely that we'll have to get rid of somebody. Whether you're somebody who wants to sell Couñago, Priskin or Lisbie what you can't just do is click your fingers and get another club to bid a price that's right for Town & ensure that the other club offers the wages/incentives that make that player actually agree to sign for another club. Therefore if people want to get another striker in they may have to accept that Couñago could be sold as even if they may prefer to see Lisbie &/or Priskin go because you can't just get other teams to buy them by wishing. If Couñago does go then I'd be happy to see Stead & Priskin given a run in the side until the end of the season and then we can judge them in the summer and until then give them our full support. We'd still have Walters who, when available, will continue to feature either up front or on the right of midfield. As back up we have Wickham to come off the bench (& whilst I'm on the subject please can everyone remember he's 16 and for anyone who's been moaning about him get off his back!) and if somebody gets injured or suspended we could get an emergency loan in or look to one of the youths such as Ronan Murray if we were really short of numbers for a game.

Firstly Pablo wont go unless he wants to as he likes Town too much and is settled here so i expect to either see out his contract or maybe go to London club on loan. If Priskin had scored on tuesday it might have been a turning point for him and fans perhaps. But he didnt so i can see him going soon as he needs a change, he cant be happy either! I'm no keen on John and expect him to return to CP if Keano finds a replacement or two.

ITFC85...all those who want him out on here, probably werent at the Coventry game, so were unable to sing his name!

Sad but true, he is one of the best we have, so keep him until someone better comes along...in the meantime i will do what i always do and support him and all the players who pull on the blue and white of ITFC...simple really.

good words injuredanimal, people tend to forget the other attributes of a striker if he doesnt score goals, Pablos about his hold up play and getting on his back isnt going to help him abit likle Priskin really

Well said ITFC85 and Injured .

And chrisswailes at what point did i say Counago was the messiah or answer to our problems , i merely pointed out a fact to yesjohn99 moaning that Pablo cant score goals - 2 GOALS IN LAST 3 GAMES

I agree he is lazy but one bit of magic far outweighs a lot of average work hard displays by others who arent scoring either

I'll drive him to Sheffield if that what it takes for him to go. To many fans have blinkers on re Pablo

surco72 - It's just personal opinion, but I haven't been impressed with Pablo since he has been back. There is no point having a player who is only sailing at half mast for most of the game, just incase he can provide a moment of magic. Once all season. That's it. In our current situation we need players to fight for possession, fight for the team (without sounding too much like an over-enthusiastic american football coach). Pablo isn't that sort of player. Fickle fans remember him for his backheel against Charlton, his stunning goals against QPR and his goal against Coventry. They choose to ignore the other 90% of the time when he might as well not be out there.
I'm not doubting his talent, but his commitment. Of course he likes it here at Ipswich. He is being paid a lot and worshipped a lot for relatively little return.
I guess the same people who love Pablo were also the ones who criticized Lisbie, Healy, Parkin, Trotter I'm not doubting that they also came up short to a degree, but they were subjected to far more abuse than was necessary whilst blindly praising Garvan.

I think many of us appreciate Counago's qualities and they are clear to see when the man is up for it. However, all too often he can seem disinterested and he can hang on to the ball a little too long and consequetly lose it. The one thig that I cannot accept in a footballer (and I expect RK is of a similar mindset) is anything less than 100% effort and commitment. All players have different skill levels and technical ability - some are great in the air, others can run at pace with ball etc - but surely the absolute minimum you can expect from a highly paid professional is total commitment / effort? Those who defend Pablo for his deficencies in this respect and try to offset them with the flashes of magic he brings are misguided. I wonder what the impact of Pablo's lack of effort and commitment in many games over the years does for team spirit and morale? I bet it isn't positive! If the right offer comes along, I would let him go. Not sure if Wednesday could fund his wages though. And don't forget, if he had gone to Swansea pre-season, RK may well have kept hold of Jordan Rhodes!

Pablo is the best we have! And that is the precise problem. We need someone better and if that means him moving on, then so be it.

Yes he can thread a pass through that can split the defence, but more often that not his passes are so predictable they are easily intercepted or he holds onto the ball for so long that three defenders close him down and come away with the ball themselves.

Did anyone hear BBC radio Suffolk after Tuesdays match. A caller suggested that Alan Quinn was better than Pablo or Priskin!

Scuzzer added 14:03 - Jan 28
Why on earth would we want to get rid of him to Wednesday! A rival team just one point behind us....unless it is thought that his arrival there would seal their fate!

(Shakes head in wonderment at the ignorance of some of our supporters.) Opinions are like ar$eholes everyone has one but damn do some of our supporters opinions stink. When they actually begin to know what they are talking about I might start taking their views seriously. Just have to be happy they are not in charge of the club I suppose.
